About this ebook

This book is a well documented chronicle of the rebellions of the Alpujarra during the 16th century. Written after the rebellions, its author was in possession of numerous data and a more historicist perspective. The book summarizes, from a Christian perspective, many of the classic testimonies taken after the conquest of Granada. Mrtires de la Alpujarra is akin to the Historia de la guerra de Granada, a reference text for understanding the wars and conflicts between the Islamic world and Christians during the 15th and 16th centuries. The book describes a turbulent and little known time in the history of Spain. As the nation increased its dominions in America it was going through a complex process of integration, extermination, and confrontation between different communities that were involved. Then, surprising from the perspective of official history, one hundred years after the Catholic Monarchs entered into Granada restrictions were imposed as to permissible language, sanitation practices, holy days, and other cultural impositions.
