The novel's protagonist garnered a great deal of attention, treated with respect due to his authentic speech and portrayal of gaucho customs. However, the work doesn't come across as a localist portrait or a naive exaltation of a social class. The story is told with a modern rhythm in both its treatment of characters and its juxtaposition of scene. The characters seem strangely involved in the conflicts of their time, yet distant, obeying inner impulses that contrast with the reality of their world.
