I’ve been hooked on kayaking since the age of 12, when I discovered the magical feeling of being able to paddle my own boat and the joys of moving water. In the late 70s and early 80s Tasmania still had remote and unknown rivers, and I was lucky enough to share in the adventure of first descents. As a teenager, slalom emerged as my priority. For nearly ten years I followed my ambition as a slalom racer, achieving success at a national level and competing internationally on the Australian team at four world championships through the 1980s. Travelling and competing on the slalom circuit was a fantastic, and at times highly challenging experience, that sparked my curiosity about performance psychology and has shaped my life and career ever since. Following my first slalom career, I coached the Australian slalom team at the Barcelona Olympics, then I moved to Britain where I worked as a coach and sport psychologist with talented paddlers and coaches on the British slalom and sprint teams over three Olympic cycles. For the last ten years I’ve been an active paddler again; running rivers, trying to master freestyle moves, racing slalom again and introducing my daughters to the sport.

Why the fundamentals count
In 1992 I was coaching the Australian slalom team at the Barcelona Olympics. After a twenty-year gap, slalom was back on the Olympic programme. We spent hours preparing on the new artificial course at La Seu d’Urgell, learning every wave and feature. No one knew what the actual layout of the course would be, but we knew it would be difficult. It was the Olympics after all...
We were wrong. TV schedules needed to keep things moving, so the day before the competition we saw a fast, open and straightforward course which skirted the difficult features we’d spent so long practising on. You could almost hear the collective groan of disbelief.
Despite their initial disappointment at such a simple course, I watched in amazement as some of the world’s best athletes blew their Olympic chances. Despite the simplicity of the gate sequences, many athletes failed to deliver, wilting under the gaze of the spectators, the knowledge that they were being watched by millions of television viewers, and their desperate desire to achieve Olympic success. It worked in our favour: the under-rated Danielle Woodward performed to the level of her ability and won the silver medal for Australia. It was a powerful illustration of the importance of delivering the fundamentals – both technical and psychological – when it counted.

It gave me a sense of freedom and competence that I couldn’t find on the football field or cricket pitch, and growing up in Tasmania it was important, especially for a boy, to be good at a sport. In my early days I could just as easily be found playing canoe-polo, down-river racing, sea kayaking or river-running. In the late 70s and early 80s Tasmania still had remote and unknown rivers, and I was lucky enough to share in the adventure of first descents. As a teenager, slalom emerged as my priority. I completed my psychology PhD in 2013¹, in an attempt to answer the questions I’ve been asking all these years: What’s the connection between what paddlers think and feel and how they perform? How does mental preparation help performance? What do paddlers and their coaches need to do, to ensure paddlers perform at their best when it counts?
This book takes what I’ve learned over the years and presents it in a practical, accessible format for paddlers and coaches. The material is relevant for competitors in all disciplines as well as for recreational paddlers. I use the terms paddle-sports, canoeing and kayaking interchangeably, so please don’t take offence if you feel I’m ignoring your specific craft!
Section 1 begins by understanding self-confidence, the single most important factor for success and enjoyment in paddle-sports, as it is in most fields of human endeavour. I describe how self-confidence flows from the four Psychological Fundamentals of Mastery Motivation, Decision Making, Execution and Teamwork. They are called fundamentals in the same way that edge control, balance, rotation and timing are essential physical aspects of paddling. Understanding and developing the Fundamentals makes the connection between what happens inside your head and how you perform. The psychological Fundamentals develop naturally with experience but I provide specific skills and exercises that you and your coach or sport psychologist can use to increase your capability and speed up your learning in each area.
Section 2 has six chapters that each address a theme and show how the psychological Fundamentals help performance. Feel free to dip into the chapters that interest you most.
There’s a chapter on competition that’s relevant for slalom, extreme racing, sprint, marathon, ocean racing and freestyle, with real examples from top paddlers and coaches. This will help you develop your own personalised Performance Demand Model and a race day plan to guide you successfully through your event.
The next chapter explores whitewater paddling and shows how the psychological fundamentals are just as relevant when you’re sitting at the top of a waterfall as when you are on a start-line. I look at risk and decision-making in remote environments, and how to maintain or rebuild confidence after a bad experience.
Chapter 8 tackles women in paddling. I was asked to write this by a young man I met paddling with his girlfriend. He was puzzled and frustrated by his girlfriend’s behaviour on the river, so I’ve interviewed some outstanding women paddlers to get their advice and also reviewed the research on the psychological differences between men and women.
Chapter 9, Paddling with young people, will be especially relevant if you’re a parent or coach. I explain how young people’s thinking, feeling and motivation can change through their teenage years and into young adulthood, and what you can do to help them stay engaged and positive.
Next, I look at canoeing over a lifetime and the psychological transitions at different stages of life. I show that some real gifts emerge with maturity that mean you can get as much, or more, satisfaction from paddle-sports as the youngsters.
Finally, Chapter 11 closes with some reflections about what paddling in the natural environment and in the wilderness has to offer for your mental and spiritual health.
I’ve provided footnotes for each chapter, but as this is intended to be a practical rather than an academic book, they are meant to help you learn more and feel reassured that I’m not making things up, rather than forming an exhaustive reference list.

Self Confidence and The Fundamentals
Self-confidence is the single most important psychological factor in successful sports performance. Self-confidence is based on how you think about a situation and assess your chances of success. It’s the realistic knowledge and belief that you are capable of achieving what you set out to do. Self-confidence is more than bravado or naïve optimism – although it’s easily confused with both. Truly self-confident paddlers don’t need to talk themselves up or talk their competitors down. Truly self-confident paddlers know how to weigh up the risks, and understand that some rapids are better left alone. They also understand that no matter how confident they are in their own ability, that other competitors or the force of a river or ocean remain outside their control, so race results or safety are never guaranteed. Being self-confident doesn’t mean you never feel anxious or scared, but it does mean you can deal with these feelings productively rather than them hampering your performance. While some paddlers seem to possess natural self-confidence, the reality is that everyone’s self-confidence fluctuates – whether you’re an Olympic champion or a raw beginner. So it’s important to understand where self-confidence comes from and how you can develop it.
