About this ebook

To us, first responders are heroes. But for them, risking their lives is a normal, everyday thing.

Mudflap:
Born the baby of the family, Mudflap has always had something to prove to emerge out of the shadows of his older siblings. He spent eight years as a Special Ops elite sniper and is now a firefighter. But at his heart, he’s just a normal West Texas good old boy who loves his beer, women and football, until the Department of Defense calls him up to say they need his skills again.

Shanae:
Shanae is a first responder of a different sort. She’s a trauma nurse who works on a medical evacuation helicopter team. But while she lives a life full of adrenaline every day, it’s just a cover for her real life, where she hides in the shadows and is secret agent, Shadowfox for the Lubbock Foxtrot Team (LiFT). She’s living the kind of life that most people think exists only in movies and books.

Working for two different branches of the government, Mudflap and Shanae are in a race against time and the terrorists who threaten the very heart of West Texas life, football. They’re working toward the same goal, but find themselves in a confrontation against each other and the lies they’ve each had to hide behind. Can love win out in the end or will the cost be each other and their very lives?

First responders are heroes every day, but this story tells the tale of when they become even more and find love along the way. The key is for them to stay alive so that they can complete their mission and just maybe live happily ever after.

On an ordinary day, they save lives. On an extraordinary day, they save the country.

(All the proceeds from this novel will go to the Lubbock, TX Red Cross.)

Read from August 16 to September 08, 2013Read for BookClub (Kindle)Overall Rating: 4.00Story Rating: 4.25Character Rating: 3.75First Thought when Finished: The action in The Shadow of Mudflap was heart pumping and never ending! I totally approve!Story Thoughts: The Shadow of Mudflap is a romping good ride with just a bit of nail-biting involved. There is a lot of action, intrigue, and just enough smexiness to make you forget that the characters seem to be under threat pretty much every step they take. I really enjoyed the mystery/thriller aspect of The Shadow of Mudflap. The story flowed quite well and I was on edge for most of it. While I figured out parts there were still one or two things that made me go "ohhhhhh" at the end. I LOVE THAT!Character Thoughts: I loved Mudflap despite his unfortunate name. He had a sense of honor and loyalty that can make a girl swoon. He also acknowledged that his name was unusual but he made it work. Shanae took me awhile to warm up to (3/4 of the story). I think because she was a little too off-putting. Though once more of her back story was told and her sister came into the picture--I warmed to her. I did love what Mudflap brought out in her though so I liked them together.Final Thoughts: The proceeds of The Shadow of Mudflap go to charity! While that is awesome, I would recommend this story based on the story alone. I think you would have a blast reading it!Personal Note: Generally after reading Christi's stories I feel the need to call my family in Lubbock and check them LOL. I love when books are set in places that I know :)

The Shadow of Mudflap is an enjoyable story involving secret agents, a domestic terrorist organization, motorcycle gangs, and, at the heart of it all, Texas football. If you don’t already know this, then let me be clear: Texans take their football seriously! Snow and Smith do not exaggerate the importance of this sport one bit. I wouldn’t have believed it until I moved to Texas five years ago. Football is sacred here. Once I started the book, I couldn’t put it down and pretty much finished it in one sitting. The characters are well-developed and have their own personal issues to confront as they covertly work to stop a local terrorist organization, the ALT who seems to have targeted the Texas Tech football team to advance its own agenda. Mudflap Davidson, and yes that’s his real name, is a sexy, gorgeous firefighter who gets pulled into the conflict when the Army asks him to go undercover to watch for suspicious, threatening activities that may harm the Texas Tech football team. Because of Mudflap’s role in the community and his skills as a former special ops sniper, he is able to easily slip into an undercover role working for the Department of Defense. When he begins to pursue the pretty paramedic who helped his injured partner during a fire, he has no idea that she is really Shadowfox, an agent for the Lubbock Foxtrot Team, a top secret branch of Homeland Security hiding under the guises of LiFT EMS, who provide air and ambulance medical services in the area. The Foxtrot Team is also investigating the ALT, but neither agency knows about the other’s involvement. Shanae is drawn to Mudflap’s good looks and charming personality. However, she has no interest in more than just having a casual fling. She works in a field dominated by men and based on her observations and limited personal experience, she has concluded that men only use women for sex. So, her motto is to do the same with men, without getting tangled up with emotional attachments. Her last relationship with a CIA agent, Seth, has also led her to believe men are controlling and jealous. Shanae is willful and independent, and she’s doesn’t think relationships work for her. Ironically, though, she can’t help but see true love is possible since her twin sister is happily married. It was heartwarming and fun to watch Mudflap and Shanae’s relationship develop, and their periodic texting is witty, flirty, and heartfelt. Their online conversations and the sexual chemistry between the two are powerful factors in drawing them together, even though Shanae keeps trying to pull away. Although Shanae does what she can to keep her distance, Mudflap digs in his heels and continues to tear down all the walls she has erected to secure her heart. He has that wonderful blend of Alpha and sweetness that is hard to resist. Mudflap isn’t overbearing or controlling, and he patiently gives her space while still letting her know that he wants her. The motorcycle is scene is my favorite where Mudflap’s alpha side emerges, and he bulldozes right through Shanae’s emotional defenses. Let’s just say, this is one hot scene, where a fire hose might be needed but certainly wouldn’t be welcomed. Mudflap and Shanae make a great couple, and I like that their relationship progresses over time and doesn’t overshadow the mystery and suspense in trying to stop the ALT’s plans. This is a pretty quick read with a clear writing style and an engaging storyline that kept my interest. The authors do weave in some humorous situations involving Mudflap, a handgun, and naked people that lightened up the otherwise serious tone of the book. As you read the book, keep in mind that it’s dangerous to interfere with Texans and football. I look forward to the next adventure with the Foxtrot Team.I received a copy of this book from the authors for an honest review.

Mudflap

Mudflap Davidson gazed at the wall of fire in front of him, focusing the spray of water toward the base of the curls of orange, yellow, and blue. As the flames continued to grow and lick across the roof, he realized the fire department wasn’t making any headway against this inferno. The call had come in too late and cotton residue throughout the old mill continued to fuel the voracious fire. Abandoned cotton gins like this were a disaster waiting to happen.

He and his partner, Grant Simpson, were working the exterior of the B wall when the information came through their headsets. Someone reported a homeless family including two children lived within the office of the structure, an office which was on their side of the building. All it took was a glance at his partner and they were on the same wavelength. They scrambled to the door, powering through the rotten wooden doorframe.

Inside, a maelstrom of heat and smoke blasted at them. The glow from the fire flickered across the high ceiling and signaled the urgency to move quickly. A bad feeling rolled over Mudflap’s shoulders. He momentarily met Grant’s grim and focused eyes. This huge structure wasn’t going to last much longer. They needed to hurry. Mudflap continued to man the hose as they worked as a team to clear the way and find those kids.

Scanning the thermal imaging camera around the room, Grant flashed two fingers at him and signaled toward the vague outline of another door. Mudflap nodded and followed the light of the reflective tape on Grant’s gear, spraying hot spots along the way. The metal of the building creaked and groaned with the power of the fire devouring it.

The smoke was thicker the farther into the building they battled. Instinct alone, honed by working hundreds of fires, led them closer to the office.

I’ve got them! Grant yelled as he reached forward to the bulky shapes on the ground. Mudflap could barely discern the children through the fog of smoke.

He dropped the hose and grabbed at the small body Grant thrust toward him.

Get out! I’ve got the other one and am right behind you, Grant called out.

Mudflap took off running, the small child completely still in his arms. He cradled the small body trying to protect the child from the fire and embers as he stumbled the few steps through the door and into the fresh air and daylight outside. Luckily another firefighter stood there and he passed the child off to him before turning back to help Grant.

The other child had been struggling and screaming in Grant’s arms, loud enough to be heard over the roar of the fire. He had to hurry and help.

Mudflap reentered the building and it seemed like forever before he found them again, but when he did, Grant shoved the child into his hands. They were running low on air in their packs, the structure was about to come down around them, and Mudflap was closest to the door.

Just as he cleared the door with the child in his arms, a gust of hot air blast over him as the building gave a final soul-shredding bellow and collapsed, trapping Grant inside. Mudflap thrust the child into the outstretched arms of a waiting paramedic before turning back to the carnage.

Time completely stopped as firefighters swarmed the area. One of their own was trapped in the debris. To Mudflap, the surge of bodies felt like being stuck in the mud. He needed to get to his partner.

Adrenaline surged through him as he tore through the smoldering ruins, knowing every single second counted toward Grant’s survival. Finally they uncovered him and pulled him clear of the building. Grant was only pinned down for a total of five minutes, but it had felt like five hours.

A paramedic team barreled in, shoving the firefighters out of their way so they could work on Grant.

Mudflap stood by helplessly, watching the medical team prep Grant. When the call went out that there were children involved, they called in the helicopter for fast transport to the hospital. The kids appeared to be fine, although terrified and both suffering from mild cases of smoke inhalation.

But Grant needed the medevac. Even from a distance, Mudflap could see the blood, twisted bones, and contusions through the thick layer of grime blanketing Grant’s still body.

Two of the medical team worked on Grant, assessing his vitals and setting the IV. Frustration pounded at Mudflap. That was his partner injured, all because he left him behind.

The female paramedic, one he’d seen a few times, but never worked with before, bent down to listen to Grant, her chestnut ponytail swinging with her movement. She looked up and scanned the cluster of firefighters. Who’s Mudflap?

When he stepped forward, she waved him over. He wants to tell you something, but make it quick. We need to go and get him into surgery.

He leaned down to Grant. What happened? I thought you were right behind me.

I saw something. My dad... Grant’s voice was scratchy. He pressed a circle of gold into Mudflap’s hand.

Mudflap gave a quick nod, squeezed Grant’s shoulder, and looked down at the odd coin that he had given him. A cold thread of apprehension snaked down his spine, but he couldn’t focus on the mystery of Grant’s dad now. I’ll be at the hospital when you get out of surgery.

The female paramedic again brushed him aside, while glancing curiously at the coin. I’m sorry. We have to go.

The paramedic tried to put the oxygen mask on Grant, but he pushed it away with a weak wave of his arm. His bloodshot eyes sought out Mudflap again. It wasn’t your fault.

Mudflap swallowed against the lump in his throat and gave a quick nod and squeeze to Grant’s shoulder. They’d been partners for four years and Grant knew the way his mind worked, knew the guilt he carried over Kyle’s death in Afghanistan. He couldn’t keep his spotter alive then and now he’d let down another partner.

He refocused on the paramedic, momentarily losing himself in her golden brown eyes. An arc of electricity shot through him. She was stunning and the empathy etched in her face pulled at him. What hospital are you taking him to?

Mercy.

Thanks. Keep him alive.

She gave a quick nod and her lips pressed together in a tight line of determination. Everything about her body language said she didn’t think he was going to make it, but she would do everything she could to give him his best shot.

* * *

Mudflap pulled the door to Grant’s hospital room closed behind him as he entered the hallway. Four hours and, while the news wasn’t perfect, Grant was still alive. He’d made it through surgery to repair the internal bleeding. He still had broken bones that needed medical attention, but they wanted him more stabilized first.

Grant’s wife was with him now and Mudflap was on his way home. The call for the cotton gin fire had come at the end of a long twenty-four hour shift. He needed to decompress.

His body was exhausted although he still felt the remnants of adrenaline and frustration surging through his system. It would help if he could work off some excess energy. Right now a good, sweaty, distracting romp in bed sounded about right. But since there wasn’t anyone besides Derek, his roommate, waiting for him at home, that wasn’t very likely.

The image of the sexy paramedic momentarily flashed through his brain, but that just brought his thoughts back around to worrying about Grant.

As he walked down the long hospital corridor, he replayed those moments during the fire. What could he have done to prevent this from happening? Grant was his partner. It was his job to keep him safe and he shouldn’t have let him fall behind. It was just like what happened to Kyle when they were ambushed in Afghanistan.

He was so busy berating himself as he walked that he was surprised when the gorgeous paramedic from the medevac flight pulled him to a stop. His eyes were immediately drawn to her tight black t-shirt and fitted cargo pants. Simmering arousal thrummed through his system, a leftover from the adrenaline of the day.

She watched him with compassion lighting up her gorgeous whisky-colored eyes. Hey, how’s your partner?

Damn, even her voice was low and sexy. It did bad things to his already energized system as blood rushed to his building erection. He tried to concentrate on what she asked. He made it through surgery, so it looks better. They said the next twenty-four hours are critical.

She nodded, her tight ponytail bouncing. He wondered if her hair felt as silky as it looked and what it would look like tumbling around her shoulders while she rode him. He shook his head to clear his erotic thoughts.

God, he didn’t even know her, and what he did know of her told him she was a sweet, nice girl. He didn’t need to be thinking about using her that way.

Instead he asked, Hey, I don’t think we’ve met before. Are you new?

Yeah, I joined the team a few months ago. I think this is the first time we’ve run across each other out in the field, though. I’m glad your partner’s going to be okay. It was crazy out there today. She watched him curiously and he thought he saw a flash of exhaustion and pain in her eyes that said it had been a long day for her too. Are you okay? she asked.

He shook his head again wondering how he could even think about sex while his partner was fighting for his life in a hospital bed. Talk about low. Yeah, I didn’t have a building collapse on me so I’m fine. He ran another frustrated hand through his hair.

I saw him hand you something. What was that?

What was the story with the coin? Working to look more composed than he really was, he felt the warm metal between his fingers as he slid his hand into his pocket. He hadn’t taken time to consider it before now, with all his focus on Grant’s medical status. Something about it seemed familiar. The dread he’d felt when he saw it pooled again. I don’t know what it is. He pulled it out of his pocket to show her. Something about it caught his eye, but I sure as hell can’t see that it’s worth dying over.

Can I see it?

Sure. He handed her the coin, a tingle racing up his arm at the brush of her fingertips across his.

She flipped it over and studied the markings on it before handing it back with a negligent shrug. I don’t know about the coin, but you know, he was right. It wasn’t your fault. You got the kids out. That was your job and those kids are alive because you did it.

He ignored her statement, since it seemed to him that he should have been able to do both things. Thanks for helping him. You probably saved his life.

She gave him a soft smile and a frank look that made his blood sizzle. He had to be misinterpreting. Just because he had sex on his mind, didn’t mean she did.

That’s just my job.

What? He’d gotten lost in her
