About this ebook
Former KGB agent Vladimir Putin is one of the world's most enigmatic leaders. Fiercely protective of his private life, yet at the same time projecting his image at every opportunity, he is scrutinized and analysed constantly by the media, in an attempt to build up a picture of what makes him tick.
Certainly he is passionately fond of sport, often making sure he is seen indulging in extreme outdoor pursuits and demonstrating his prowess as a martial arts expert. Equally, he enjoys the limelight as a would-be singer. But who is he on a deeper level?
Is he Russia's new strong man, leading the people by the nose or is he a benign democrat seeking to achieve a better standard of life for his country? Opinion is divided, both inside and outside Russia. He is, nonetheless, highly popular among his countrymen, if approval ratings are to be believed, in spite of a fiercely vocal minority who oppose him.
Perhaps the quotes, from the man himself, contained within this book will help you make up your mind about the real Vladimir Putin. Or maybe they won't...
But they will give you a lot to think about.

INTRODUCTION
Many of us are fascinated by world leaders. We want to know what makes them tick, how they rose to power, why they want that power, what they do in their spare time (if they have any), what their tastes are in music/literature/food...
Some leaders are more clearly understood than others: their rise to prominence may have been the result of a struggle for freedom (such as Nelson Mandela) or an ideology (Fidel Castro) ; they may have inherited their position through a family dynasty (Kim Jong-Un) or risen steadily through party ranks (Margaret Thatcher).
Charting Vladimir Putin’s journey to the Presidency of the Russian Federation is less obvious. A law graduate from Leningrad State University, he joined the KGB in 1975 at the age of twenty-three and served with that organisation in Leningrad and Dresden until he moved into politics in 1991. He did not come to the attention of the West until 1999, the year Boris Yeltsin resigned as President. His election as Presidential catapulted him into the international arena, making him the object of scrutiny by the world’s media. However, he has remained an enigmatic figure, managing to keep his privacy as an individual whilst at the same time taking advantage of every opportunity to place himself before the public. He evidently relishes the chance to be seen
