How Many Lightbulbs Does It Take To Change a Christian? - Jan Nunley

    Introduction

What’s happening to our environment is making news headlines almost every day. There’s a growing urgency in reports about the Earth’s capacity to bear the cost of human activity. The more scientists study climate change, the more they become concerned and united in their views. The planet is in a dangerously unstable state, and it’s clear that humans have played their part in making this happen.

But caring about the environment isn’t just a matter of jumping on a trendy bandwagon. Christians have been concerned for a long time. Care for God’s creation is deeply embedded in Christian tradition and Scripture.

(Prayers of the People, Form IV,

    The Book of Common Prayer)

Christians say they believe that the whole creation is made by God, filled with God’s Wisdom. Humans should not aim to be masters and possessors of the universe (as the French philosopher Descartes wrote). We are to be stewards, not exploiters. We believe we must pass on unharmed this exquisitely beautiful, vastly intelligent, single-sourced, yet wholly diverse creation.

It’s easy to become depressed about the state of the environment and its future, especially when the news seems to be getting gloomier. How can the relatively small changes we can each make in our own lives make a difference?

First, they mean that we are not adding to the problem. Some actions will help us to set an example for others. Furthermore, we will be telling our leaders that we want them to act to help the planet. Together, we can make a huge difference.

I will because I believe you will too.
