A History of Flamenco
Una Historia de Flamenco
The flamenco. For a lot of people it is only an additional tourist attraction of my country Spain.
To others like me it means a lot more.
Para otros como yo, es mucho más.
It is a personal, professional story.
Es una historia personal, profesional.
It is music that connects us with our roots.
And these roots date back many, many years.
To me, now that I am 30 years old, flamenco is also half of my life.
I am a bailaora.
Soy bailaora.
Since I can remember this is what I am, because I belong to a family that dedicates itself traditionally to the music.
My Dad was one of the great cantaores of the 90ies in Spain and my mother was a bailaora and palmera in almost ten flamenco groups.
In the end I come from a family with a lot of duende
.
What duende
means?
¿Qué es el duende?
It is almost impossible to explain!
¡Eso es casi imposible de explicar!
It means to have a talent, an art, a special and individual way, when playing the guitar (the tocaor performs that) or clapping hands (the palmero takes care of that), dancing (the bailaor or the bailoara performs that) or when singing, which you probably have worked out, the cantaor performs.
You probably do not merely know pieces of flamenco, since you might have heard it sometime, but also its great exponents of modern times: Paco de Lucía, Camarón, Sara Varas, Diego el Cigala, Tomate, Tomatito…
Oh yes! This here is odd.
¡Ah, sí! Esto es curioso.
Since this is the tradition, as I told you, that several generations of a family dedicate themselves to flamenco, the nicknames are passed on from generation to generation.
