About this ebook

From a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author

Every summer on Butternut Lake the tourists arrive, the shops open, and the waves lap its tree-lined shores, just as they have for years. But this season everything changes for one mother and daughter who've always called the lake home. . . .

Caroline's life is turned upside down the moment her ex-husband, Jack, strides through the door of her coffee shop. He seems changed—stronger, steadier, and determined to make amends with Caroline and their daughter, Daisy. Is he really different, or is he the same irresistibly charming but irresponsible man he was when he left Butternut Lake eighteen years ago? Caroline, whose life is stuck on pause as her finances are going down the tubes, is tempted to let him back into her life . . . but would it be wise?

For Caroline's daughter, Daisy, the summer is filled with surprises. Home from college, she's reunited with the father she adores—but hardly knows—and swept away by her first true love. But Will isn't what her mother wants for her—all Caroline can see is that he's the kind of sexy "bad boy" Daisy should stay away from.

As the long, lazy days of summer pass, Daisy and Caroline come to realize that even if Butternut Lake doesn't change, life does. . . .

This is the latest in the author's series based in a small town with down to earth, warm characters that steal your heart. The main characters are a café owner and her college-age daughter, as they navigate feelings for bad boys, who are trying to make significant changes. The doubts come with whether the changes are real. The café owner is struggling with a failing business, middle age issues and the daughter is dealing with a first love and all the highs and lows that come with that. It's a quick, satisfying read.

Title: Butternut SummerAuthor: Mary McNearPublisher: William MorrowSeries: The Butternut Lake Trilogy #2Reviewed By: Arlena DeanRating: 4Review:"Butternut Summer" by Mary McNearBook Description...."Return to the golden beauty of Minnesota’s Butternut Lake in this emotional story that vividly captures the joy and pain of first love, as a mother and daughter each come to terms with the desires of her heart.Summer at Butternut Lake—a season full of surprises . . . and life-changing choices.Preparing for her final year of college, Daisy is crazy busy now that she’s back at Butternut Lake. She’s helping her mother, Caroline, run their coffee shop and trying to build a relationship with the absentee father who’s suddenly reappeared. She never expected to fall in love with Will, the bad-boy from high school who works at the local garage. With every passing day she and Will grow closer to each other . . . and closer to the day they will have to say goodbye. As summer’s end looms, Will and Daisy face heartbreaking choices that might tear them apart.Caroline already has her hands full trying to make ends meet at the coffee shop without having her no-good ex suddenly show up. Now that Jack is back, he’s determined to reconnect with the family he walked out on twenty years ago. But with the bank pounding on her door and Jack’s presence reminding her of the passion they once shared, Caroline’s resolve begins to crumble. As Daisy’s departure looms and her financial worries grow, Caroline just may discover the support she needs . . . in the last place she ever imagined."What I liked about this novel....I liked how this series is still in this small town of Butternut Lake, Minnesota where most of the town people know of each other as this author presents to the reader several well written stories. This story was a fast paced read of mainly three people...Caroline, owner of Pearls coffee shop, a very caring person, but she has some secrets of her own and is the need of help that she is trying to hide. Will she trust her ex who is now back in town trying to be in there life's? Daisy, the daughter who was home for the summer from college, now twenty one years old struggling for her own identity, and she is in love with a 'former bad boy.' With all of this going on will she be able to get her parents back together after being apart for eighteen years? Jack (ex husband)who has come back to this town bringing with him some real bad memories of the pass dealing with alcohol, gambling and cheating. Has he changed from his former life?Put all this story together with some other secondary characters and you will see how each one has some flawed, sympathetic, very believable and some intriguing moments in how this author will solve and bring it all out in this authentic and entertaining story. There will be some sexual content that was presented very well. I did find some of "Butternut Summer" a little straightforward and predictable as it reconnects some to the past to new beginnings. However, if you are looking for a engaging romantic read you have come to the right place that would lead me to recommend this novel to you.

This story is about a family with introspective from their individual situations. Will always felt out of Daisy's league so never pursued a relationship with her, but things change the summer before Daisy's final year in college. Caroline can only see the similarity between Will and her ex-husband Jack.and feel's this relationship is doomed from the start The business that has sustained Caroline's family for generations is in trouble because of the recession. Caroline fears she might lose everything...Oh!... And Jack is back! This truly well-written, traumatic story is of betrayal, forgiveness, recompense, second chances, stereotyping, trust, and abusiveness. Can one truly turn lemons into lemonade? Can the effects of an abusive lifetime and poor choices be overcome? The reader's interest is captured throughout the book. The characters at times are infuriating yet others are very endearing. They seem very real. The scenes are described well and pulls the reader into them. There is minimal bad language but on the whole quite "clean". There is pre-marital sexual situations.I truly feel this novel is deserving of a Five Stars rating except for the less than Conservative principles.* This book was sent to me in exchange of an honest review, of which I have given.

These books are just absolutly light and refreshing. And after a long cold snowy winter, trudging in and out of the cold every day there isn't anything more I could ask from a book then a nice get away to a town somewhere else, some great characters and a simple happy ending. Also the chance to know more books in this series will follow. Thank you Mary McNear.

This is the next book in the series,it was likeable, but very predictable.I did not enjoy this one as much. This book focused on a Mom and Daughter in town. The characters from the first book came in mid way thru. Just very predictable.I doubt I'll read the rest of the series.

Butternut Summer is the absolutely charming second installment in Mary McNear's delightful Butternut Lake Trilogy. With central themes such as forgiveness, trust and the age old question which ponders whether people can truly change, this novel also features a dual storyline with both Caroline Keegan and her daughter Daisy both finding love over the course of a summer.

Caroline's tumultuous marriage to Jack Keegan ended in divorce after he walked out on both her and their daughter Daisy. Unbeknownst to Caroline, Daisy and Jack have repaired their fractured relationship and in fact, Jack is moving back to the small town of Butternut Lake. Jack would like nothing better than to reunite with Caroline, but she is nowhere near ready to forgive him for his past transgressions nor is she willing to trust his claims that he is a changed man. Adding to Caroline's stress is the financial crisis she is facing with the family owned business. But it is Daisy's out of character relationship with Will Hughes, an auto mechanic with a questionable past, that is the biggest source of frustration to this overprotective mom.

Daisy's romance with Will figures most prominently and it is incredibly sweet watching them fall for one another. The two have the disadvantage of coming from completely different backgrounds, but their budding relationship becomes a catalyst for Will to find a new direction for his life. Daisy is about to embark on her senior year of college and while her future has a few uncertainties, she is a smart, capable young women who remains focused on her career goals. Will's family life is heartbreaking but seeing himself reflected through Daisy's eyes gives him the direction he has been lacking up until now.

Caroline's past with Jack colors her present day viewpoint of both Will and Jack and she stubbornly clings to her opinion that neither of them deserves a second chance. Caroline and Daisy have always been close, but during this summer of change, she is feeling disconnected from her daughter. Her relationship with Jack is adversarial at first, but slowly, Caroline begins to see that Jack is different than before but she is afraid to trust that he won't revert back to the man he used to be. With a financial deadline fast approaching, Caroline finds help from a very unexpected source when she finally shares the burden she has been carrying on her own.

Jack knows that trying to get back together with Caroline is going to take a lot of time and patience on his part. He respects the boundaries Caroline places on their relationship and he bides his time trying to show her he has truly turned over a new leaf. Jack has overcome a lot of his past demons but he knows he must remain vigilant to avoid falling back into the destructive lifestyle he has worked so hard to escape. Caroline's realization that Jack is serious about the changes in his life is gradual but that is what makes the resolution of their part of the storyline so realistic.

Butternut Summer is a thought-provoking novel with a warm and inviting setting, a likable and sympathetic cast of characters and a credible storyline that is very heartwarming. An easy to read and engaging romance that is heartfelt and moving, this latest addition to Mary McNear's delightful Butternut Lake Trilogy can be read as a standalone but I highly recommend the entire series.
