I was born and raised in Maine, living there for 46 years before making the trek out west to live in fabulous Las Vegas, NV. I am a web designer and mobile app developer. I'm new to ebook writing and find it's a great outlet for the ridiculous amounts of knowledge and experience I've garnered over the last half century. I am a licensed cosmetologist, owned my own salon for many years, worked in sales, customer service and a wide variety of industries. I am an avid DIYer and love to build furniture and cabinets. I've taken on some pretty daunting home improvements over the years and love to share my adventures, which I do on one of my blogs. I maintain 3 connected with my website: Oh My! DIY, The Comfort Food Notebook and Desert City Beauty. As you may have guessed, I'm very creative with a penchant for anything that allows me to dream up something and turn it into reality. I hope my readers enjoy my books when they find one they like and will visit my website and blogs. I love feedback and hope to hear from people.

    About the Author

I consider myself a bit of an authority on living in Maine. I get to do that because I was born and raised there, lived in northern central Maine for 36 years, then spent another 10 and a half years living in the capitol before moving out west to become a tourist-turned-city-dweller in Las Vegas, Nevada. During that time, I had the pleasure of playing tourist, getting to know the state that I called home. I have visited all corners of the state, for fun and for work, by car, truck, Harley, boat, plane and on foot. I've seen pretty much every inch of the state from several different angles. I've managed to capture vast amounts of it in photos and even some video. I've spent many days at a time deep in the woods of northern Maine fighting off black flies and mosquitoes, praying that I wouldn't get eaten by a bear or trampled by a moose but hoping to at least catch a glimpse of any wild things that might be present. I have wandered quietly through the dense forests exploring high ridges, hidden caves, shaded streams and isolated lakes. I've hiked small parts of the northern most Appalachian Trail pausing to take in achingly beautiful vistas, awe-inspiring waterfalls, ethereal cedar groves and what is most assuredly a great-great-grandfather of forests, untouched by skidders, bulldozers and chainsaws. In my most serious tone, I must admit that I have the utmost respect and admiration for the beauty of Maine. I have very few regrets about moving away but that doesn't mean I can't miss many things about living there. Not the least of which is the little miracle of life and love that my son and his wife created and introduced to the world in April of 2013. His name is Dillinger and this book is dedicated to him with all my love in hopes that he will see the beauty of his home state with the same awe and respect that I do.

    Overview

In this book, I will attempt to show you what life is really like in Maine through my experiences and pictures. I will share my personal experiences of growing up native, living the lifestyle, exploring the hidden treasures, enjoying the simplicity, coping with the weather, navigating a chronically depressed economy and getting into the right state of mind for the experience you want. My goal is to help you have a better understanding of the people, the places, the humor, the way of life and the hardships before you visit or decide to move there. I guess you could consider this an insider's guide of sorts. I will also cover a wide range of topics that typically interest people who have never been to Maine or who've been there and never explored the real Maine. I hope this book inspires people who've never considered Maine for their vacation destination to get excited about going. It's a big small state, meaning simply that it's mostly quite rural and vast once you travel north of Waterville or east of Camden. Tourist season, usually June through October, doesn't count regarding the latter. Depending on where you decide to go and what you want to do while you're there, your adventure may include a bit of driving and if you aren't in the right state of mind, it can be boring. I encourage you to use your Google Map app while you read. You just might enjoy seeing the real places I talk about in this book. There are several links inserted in this book and I guarantee them to be safe and non-solicitous. Most of them are resource links to verify my information or provide additional reading, some are links to my website where you can view larger versions of my beautiful images, all of which are safe to click on.

I hope you enjoy learning about Maine, her people and how to take it all in without missing too many details. Maine is not an easy place to live and there is a great deal of hardship. I ask that you respect the land and it's residents and understand that while you may be on vacation, they are just living their everyday lives. Be kind, behave yourself and leave your stresses at home. Mainiacs have a sharp wit and a low tolerance for tourists with a contrary attitude. Maine is a place to find your inner child and let the serenity take over for a bit. If you're traveling to remote areas, it's pointless to bring your cellular and wifi gadgets and expect connectivity. I recommend stopping at a local store and buying a Tracfone with some minutes just for emergencies. It's about the only service likely to work once you drive past the last organized territory. Most importantly, be prepared. The time of year usually dictates what to prepare for so heed the information given regarding what to expect for weather, hazards and annoyances. Protect yourself and avoid anything that can ruin your visit.

I considered writing this entire book using the phonetic spelling relative to my Maine accent. I thought better of that idea when I realized it would be like reading a foreign language to most people. I never really thought much about accents until I spent time in St. George, Utah when we first moved out west. I took an enormous amount of ribbing for the way I pronounced common words from people who spoke fluent vanilla
