I have more important things to do than write a poor review, however, I write for the betterment of future readers, this warning. Intro to Spiritism, by Ricky Medeiros, was written with several grammatical errors throughout. Biblical quotes were not backed up with references or context. Often the writer leads with opinions rather than facts. I was hopeful to use this work as a reference for an academic paper, but sadly my time was wasted, the search continues. This op-ed is unintelligible.

THE DEATH OF MY BROTHER

AND HOW IT CHANGED MY LIFE

A TRUE STORY

I was a nineteen year old when my twelve year-old brother Joe died, hit by a car on his way home from delivering papers in North Syracuse, New York. A few months after this death, the way I looked at life was about to change. The year was 1971.

My father was transferred to Sao Paulo, Brazil in 1964. We stayed there until 1969 and during that time I was enrolled in an American Catholic School called Chapel. But, in 1968, a Brazilian friend of ours gave me a book to read, The Spirits Book, by Allan Kardec. I read it, found it interesting and somewhat logical. I did not know how this book, along with Joe’s death, would transform the way I looked at the world, myself and others.

This book went with us when we moved back to the U.S., finding its way to Syracuse New York. Two months after the accident, I gave it to my mother. She read it and wondered out loud if what the book said was true: we survive death and it is possible to communicate with the so-called dead, or Spirits, who have passed over.

I told her I would try to see if, in Syracuse, there was a place we could go to find out.

There was, The First Spiritualist Church of Syracuse, New York. We went, and there we met a woman by the name of Margaret Tice, who was the Church’s pastor and medium.

The first night we went my mother wore a red dress, so no one would know I had lost a son. She sat in the front row of the small room and I sat in the back.

The services began with the Our Father and the singing of some Protestant Hymns, while Tice played the organ. After this was over, the medium began to deliver messages to the fifteen or so people in the Church.

She came to my mother and declared, You are wrapped up in a grief so profound that I cannot give you any messages right now. Your sadness is cutting off all vibrations around you.

After a bit, she came to me. I was sitting in the last row of chairs by myself.

She sat down and told me there was someone named Fred who wanted to speak. She asked me if I recognized the name. Yes, Fred is my name ,I answered, because my real name is not Ricky, it is Frederick , but, being I never liked the name, I had adopted Ricky.

She shook her head and laughed.

This name belongs to someone who speaks in a low, rough voice with an Italian accent. He’s telling me he is your grandfather and you were given the name Fred because of him. Do you recognize him?

I sure did. My grandfather’s name was Fred Pauletti. He had Americanized it from Feliciano Paoletti. And, my mother gave me his name when I was born.

I nodded and the medium went on.

"He is bringing with him a boy, who is around twelve or thirteen years
