KICK OFF - A FEW WORDS

The World Cup Cookbook isn’t just a cookbook. It’s a journey that takes you to the world’s best footballing nations, introduces you to the locals, let’s you hear their stories and gives you a taste of their national identity.

As lifelong non-chefs and football fans, Martin, Phil and I have aimed to capture the joyful soul of each World Cup nation’s cuisine in an easy way that’s a whole lot of fun.

You’ll be transported to the colourful streets of Colombia with our empanadas, get lost in Italy’s tangle of ruins with our pizzas and take a safari through Ghana with a

traditional meal of beef and rice. With vibrant photography and authentic recipes from everyday chefs, we have you covered for every World Cup occasion.

At the 2006 World Cup in Germany I was lucky enough to stay with a local friend, Dennis, who welcomed me into his family, immersing me in German culture and cuisine – from home brewed beer to black forest cake to venison goulash (featured on p46). To this day when I taste any of those flavours, the best experiences I had at the World Cup come back to me. I hope this book can help you to create the same kind of memories.

    Enjoy your food carnival,

    Brendan Hill

    DEDICATION

This book is dedicated to helping kids kick out of poverty.

Nelson Mandela said ‘Sport has the power to change the world’ and with the help of UNICEF, we’re aiming to do just that, levelling the playing field for disadvantaged kids. For every 5 books sold we’ll donate a leather soccer ball to children in refugee camps and other neglected corners of the globe - bringing them the joy and community spirit that’s synonymous with the beautiful game.

UNICEF recognises the critical role that sport plays in children’s lives. It’s vital to their health, happiness and well-being. UNICEF ambassadors Lionel Messi, David Beckham and Tim Cahill have all seen firsthand how football can help give children a brighter future.

It was overwhelming to see the overcrowded displacement camps, the poverty in which people live.

    Lionel Messi

Simple games like football build self-esteem and offers a road back to community life.

UNICEF knows that simple gifts like footballs can transform a child’s life. That’s true everywhere.

    David Beckham

"I’ve been playing football for as long as I can remember and it has been the catalyst for huge change in my life. With a football from UNICEF you can provide a catalyst for change in a child’s life. Football injects joy and laughter into even the most remote corners of the world, from schools to refugee
