    Chapter 1

Polly McCloud was born Margaret Leslie McCloud, a name she had always hated. Fortunately her mother hated it too and called her by the pet name, Polly, since she was born.

Fine, put Margaret on the birth certificate, George, I’m calling her Polly, was how the legend went of her mother winning the famous battle over naming their second child.

Polly was in her late thirties, a librarian at the local public library. She lived with her husband and two young children in Marin County, California. They loved it there. The neighborhoods were quiet and the scenery was picturesque, nestled in the hills along San Francisco Bay, near the Golden Gate Bridge. It felt like a little oasis, tucked away from the bustle of the big city, but close enough to enjoy its amenities. They lived in a nice rented house, big enough for the four of them, but quickly becoming smaller as their two boys, to Polly’s constant shock and amazement, began to fulfill their hormonal destiny and morphed into toy-throwing, tree-climbing, axe-wielding, (that’s a whole other story) delightful little monsters.

Thinking ahead, Polly and her husband had purchased some land nearby that eventually would embrace their dream home. It was a couple of acres on a wooded hillside with a view, a garden, flat areas for the kids to play, and beautiful redwood trees which stood like silent sentinels watching over all. Sometimes Polly thought their little retreat looked just like the picture postcards you might send your grandmother from your trip to Northern California. They had saved a long time for it, and now it was theirs.

There was a sturdy little one-room cabin on the property, built early last century, that served as a fun get-away and playhouse for the kids as they spent their weekend afternoons lazing about, the boys forging new paths in the woods and Polly and her husband pouring themselves into the pleasure of maintaining the terraced gardens. They had made a few renovations to the cabin and it was dry and warm in the winter, cool and breezy in the summer. Nestled in the shade of the redwoods, it was a charming and romantic addition
