About this ebook

Jen Maddox is a few days into her summer study abroad program and has loved every moment. She just left Mexico and is back on her cruise ship campus, ready to sail to Panama. Everyone tells her that the experience will change her life, but none of them realize just how drastic the change will be.

One night she goes out on deck and encounters five other students. She knows Charlie from one of her classes and he's a funny, friendly, regular guy. Picture-perfect Dani and his gorgeous wife Mariana live right down the hall from Jen. And she has seen TS, who's built like a truck, around the ship and recognizes the cute, but quiet Thomas as well.

Then Jen sees something that isn't humanly possible. Jen would have thought that it was all a dream, if not for the fact that Charlie, Dani, Mariana, TS, and Thomas are making every effort to cover it up. Suddenly, the five of them are everything but normal and Jen is determined to figure out what they're hiding.

When she does, her life really does change. Jen expected to spend her summer studying ancient Aztec and modern Panamanian worlds, but she never dreamed she'd learn about a magical one. Or find herself in it.

But Jen's childhood fantasy come true is about to turn into a nightmare; there's something on the ship. Something dangerous. Suddenly, everyone on board is threatened by a creature Jen never even believed existed. Jen and her new friends might be the only people who can stop it!

Now Jen has to learn everything she can about her new world before it kills her. And her friends. And maybe everyone on the entire ship.

I have read this book twice now. The first time I believe I downloaded it during a free promotion, and it was amazing. I just read it again this month, and it is still just as good! I cannot wait for the sequel to be released, I will be first in line to grab a copy! It took me three days to read this book the second time around, only because life tends to get in the way. Otherwise, I am sure I would have finished it a lot sooner. Not because it is an *easy read* or *short* but because once you start reading, you do not want to stop. The characters drag you into the story from the get-go, and you cannot wait to turn the page to find out what happens next. There is never a dull moment from start to finish, and the end leaves you wanting more. It is so easy to fall in love with any or all of the characters in this book, and it almost makes you wish you were onboard as well! In fact, when I read this book the first time, it was while my husband and I was a cruise, so it was the perfect read!
If you are enjoy learning about mermaids, elementals, werewolves, vampires, and such- you will not be disappointed, this book has it all and then some! The main character, Jen, is spending a semester aboard a ship for school, and meets some very interesting people in the process. She sees things that she cannot explain, and it makes her wanting to find out what the real scoop is (which in turn makes you want to know as well!). I can honestly say I have a character crush on a few of the main players in this story! That is normal, right??? Ha!

This is not one of those stories where you will be bombarded with a lot of romance, so I do feel it is appropriate for all ages. I don’t mind some romance in a story, if it adds to it, but it was not necessary for this book to make you fall in love with it. I wish I could write more, but I do not believe in leaving *spoilers* in a review, that is unfair to you! But trust me when I tell you, this is not a book you want to pass up reading.

I absolutely love Elizabeth Kirke’s style of writing, and no doubt will love the next book in this series. However, I hate to have to wait!

This was a fun ride from beginning to end, and one of those books that puts together a wide variety of magical creatures in one book. The book starts off with Jen going on a semester aboard a ship, where they visit various different countries and basically immerse the students in local culture. All is going as planned until one night she sees a girl push a guy off the ship, and shocker of all shocker, no one does anything to help the guy. And then when Jen starts to panic, thinking this guy needs a life jacket, they all look at her like she's crazy. She quickly catches on that something more is going on her, and she spends the next few days trying to figure out what is wrong with this group of people she happened to stumble upon.As it would turn out everyone in the group is some form of "magic" (or magical creature), and the reason why Jen notices the differences of the magics from the non-magics is because Jen is a magic too. This all makes for a lot of information in a not a lot of time. It was confusing for Jen and in parts a little confusing for me as a reader too. I think that is largely in part to the fact that the group is semi-big and explaining all of the details of each of these different creatures abilities is difficult. Thankfully you start to catch on after a couple of chapters.I really like the wide variety of people and abilities in this book, it makes it a lot more interesting in my opinion, and in the down time, when Jen is just hanging out with the group, she asks a lot of questions. It keeps the reader still interested in the people and in the book itself without requiring there be all action all the time.I'm not entirely sure if this book is intended YA or not. I actually looked around a little bit online to see if I could find out, but alas, no luck. I think this would make a great YA book, for the older crowd of YA. There isn't any sex in it and while there is violence I don't think it's gratuitous. That being said I still it makes for a good fun read for the average adult urban fantasy reader. The characters were fun to get to know, and all had very distinctive personalities. I think if I had to pick a favorite it would be TS, the resident werewolf. He just has such a great friendly personality, and I feel like he brought a lot of comfort to the main character Jen throughout the book. Charlie was also a fun character, as a fire elemental, he has strong emotions, and is fierce when protecting the ones he loves. While I did like the secondary characters, I think Kirke did a good job with Jen. She was completely naive to magic when this whole journey started, but she never acted dumb. She was willing to learn, acknowledging she didn't know everything, and always had a question at the ready, which made it easier for me as a reader to learn the world as well. I also appreciated that Kirke didn't make her some kind of magical savant, she didn't catch onto everything quickly, and I can tell through the series she is going to have a lot of learning to do. I think it is going to be a fun ride watching Jen learn magic throughout the book.Overall, I think this is a fun read. Like I said early I think this reads as an upper YA book, but I'm a person who is very picky about the YA I enjoy, and this is definitely one I like. It does have some series subject matter (with some violence), but generally speaking its a relaxing fun read. I could easily see myself curls up on the sofa on a rainy day with this book, the perfect escape.

I received this book in exchange for a honest review.
More Than Magic: Semester Aboard by Elizabeth Kirke
This is the first book I read by this author and I absolutely loved it!! This book had all sorts of paranormal in it; weres, witches, elementals, vampires, dryads, wizards, and etc... This book is well written and a fast paced read. Most of the story takes place on the ship although when they stop in the ports you get different glimpses of the intriguing places they stop. I'm dying to know and read the next book! It needs to hurry up and be out. The characters are awesome and funny. I just love them all. Each one of them are unique in different ways with different personalities that just make the book! This is a wonderful YA read!!

The book starts when Jen starts her classes on a Semester Abroad Cruise. During the first week, she encounters some odd things and gets her wondering if her eyes were playing tricks or if it is real. She then is thrust into a unknown world with unknown dangers. I'm not going to give anymore away or it will ruin the experience and the ride! This is one book that I plan on re-reading again and again. I give this book a 5 star review!! Go out and get this amazing read!
