    Simple Soccer

The purpose of this book is to provide a new coach with all the information they need to manage and coach youth soccer at a basic level in a short amount of time. The book is centered on a hypothetical first practice, which is designed to help the new coach teach the key components of the game through verbal explanation, diagrams and activities. The reminder of the book then reviews passing, offense, defense, offsides and coaching the first game.

The material in this book is presented as I would coach it. I begin with the absolute basics, like the playing field and then begin to overlay more advanced topics, such as corners and defense. At the same time, I make each lesson a discrete unit and follow it with soccer related activities in order to avoid prolonged periods of stillness during practice.

In addition, an offensive strategy known as the dump & chase is incorporated into the lessons. The dump & chase involves throwing, kicking or heading the ball towards the opponent’s goal and then chasing it, with intent to shoot. It is a brutish strategy, but it is easily remembered and coached, minimizes mental errors, keeps the ball away from your own goal, increases opportunities for shots and allows for quick play.

This book, in of itself, should provide the new coach enough information to understand and coach the basics of the game. However, the book is only a starting point and it is expected coaches will begin to develop their own lessons and activities to replace those outlined in the book. In addition, my theories on soccer are only theories, as such feel free to discard them and replace them with your own.

The principles in this book may be taught to any age group, but the manner in which those principles are taught must be adjusted based upon the age and mental development of the players. Please
