Fortunately, she becomes very rich by inheriting a huge amount of money. As a result of being the owner of a large amount of money, she becomes the victim of Machiavellian scheming by two American expatriates.
The novel is set in Europe, mostly England and Italy. The novel is considered to be the masterpiece written by James in the early period of his writer career.
