About this ebook
The objective of this research study is to examine aspects of integrative medicine in order to help the reader understand its benefits, limitations and application, and to outline why there is a need for such an approach and how it is possible. A practical approach has been used to demonstrate how this is possible in clinical practice. Definitions of each individual modality are given to indicate when they are necessary in an integrative health care system. Another aim is to help clinicians decide whether an integrative or specialist approach is necessary for a patient’s best prognosis. It is our hope that this book also serves as a source for patients, to broaden their awareness and educate them on individual modalities, ultimately helping them find the right combination of treatments for their particular health concern. Case studies are provided from my clinical practice to support my theory.

First and foremost I would like to thank my parents Josephine and Joseph for their continued unconditional love and support. I would especially like to thank my father who made education a matter of importance in my youth and always encouraged me to keep studying and to keep learning. To my sister Margaret and her husband Bill, thanks for supporting and listening to me through thick and thin, and also for allowing me to use them as my test cases during my early years of study.
Thank you to all my patients from whom I have learned so much. I am grateful for their feedback and inspiration in writing this book.
Finally, special thanks to all the incredible healers who have taught and inspired me to become the best possible healer. You have taught me about the most valuable art, that of healing.

Professional Journey to Date
Jason has over 15 years’ experience as a healthcare professional. He began his journey as a fitness consultant and discovered that optimum nutrition was the key and foundation to attain health and well-being. As a result of his experience in working with many top-level athletes while consulting to various NRL clubs as well as various triathletes and elite soccer players, he has a strong background in clinical and sports nutrition.
Over the past decade Jason’s practice has evolved simultaneously with his own personal development, and it was this pure natural process that led him to become an Integrative Practitioner and Naturopath. In this time he discovered the true value of Integrative and individualized medicine
and its importance in restoring health and balance. He understands and respects each individual modality in the healthcare system and knows when they are required. Jason has achieved success through his own healing and has brought these experiences and tools into his clinic to help others. His practice is built on his strong belief in practicing what you preach
and, that we all require health care tailored to our unique & specific needs because of our individuality,
In practice today, Jason uses an Integrative Medicine approach. Utilizing both conventional and complimentary and alternative medicine
(CAM) understanding and viewpoints, he combines the best of traditional and modern medicine to provide a truly holistic therapy. He has found biomesotherapy (biopuncture), acupuncture, Dorn Method Spinal Therapy, naturopathic and homoeopathic medicines, combined with a scientific approach to be the perfect combination in practice today. Screening tools such as Live Blood Cell Analysis, Biofeedback Analysis and Medical Pathology tests enable him to obtain a more comprehensive view of his patient’s health.
The experience gained from years of nutritional study combined with his personal and clinical practice, has led Jason to specialize in the Blood Type Diet and protocols for the specific treatment of acute and chronic disorders. Areas of particular interest to Jason within his practice today include sports injuries, muscular-skeletal imbalances, liver disorders, weight loss, heavy metal toxicity, gastro-intestinal issues, pediatrics, fertility and detoxification.

The Hypothesis
Integrative medicine is a comprehensive and effective approach to human health.
In my clinic I am constantly educating patients on integrative healthcare and how it provides the most comprehensive programs and more importantly, efficient and lasting health outcomes. This is particularly true when the health concern is of a complex nature. Having applied integrative medicine in my clinic, I have found this to be the most effective approach when there is a need to address patients on all levels. It has been my mission to prove that this approach also has the best prognosis.
An example of an integrative approach is as follows:
Mr. Smith presents with back pain around the scapula region. His reason for attending the clinic is mainly for the pain he is experiencing, however, in order for him to have a quick recovery and to prevent re-occurrence of the problem, we must dissect the issue and understand any possible contributing factors that may have led to his problem and the underlying cause.
Some of the common approaches to address such a problem are:
So which healthcare modality is best for Mr. Smith?
The above table demonstrates the different ways in which Mr. Smith’s problem may be treated. While all the above approaches have worked for this type of common complaint at some level, in some cases the patient may require a specialist approach by one of the above practitioners in order to help their problem. However, from my experience, for the modality to work quickly and to provide for the best prognosis, it needs to be in the spectrum of the presenting complaint (please see spectrum of modalities section). That is, the modality chosen must be one that is right for the particular problem at the time of the treatment, and work on the right level of the patient.
For example, if Mr. Smith is a stressed person with physical pain, to best effect the condition, one must address both the stress factors and the pain symptoms to achieve the best results. A Naturopath therefore, may be the best for this type of complaint as the focus is on symptomatic remedial therapy treatment, stress management and counseling for the person’s stress. Remedies may also be prescribed for Mr. Smith’s stressful state. If on the other hand, he also had global structural problems and joint /nerve pain involvement, the patient would be best suited to also consider the help of a practitioner who works on this level. For example, a Chiropractor, Physiotherapist or Massage Therapist, may be consulted to help the patient on a global structural level. Should the patient have pain that is severe, and natural medicines are not helping, it would then be recommended that anti-inflammatory medication be prescribed by a GP. It would also be recommended that the patient have medical tests to confirm any developed and progressed abnormalities, i.e. structural tissue damage or degeneration.
In the above case, Mr. Smith’s problem could be as simple as a massage or Chiropractic adjustment, which may settle the condition down. However for more complex cases, best prognosis and most comprehensive treatment, then the integrative healthcare approach is best considered. What this case demonstrates is, the importance to understand the modalities that are available to the patient, what they are useful for, and when they are appropriate.
What is Integrative Medicine?
Integrative, or Integrated Medicine, is a system of healthcare that incorporates a combination of traditional knowledge, compassion, humanity, wisdom, spirituality, universal laws, complementary and Alternative (CAM) healing methods, allopathic medicine, modern science, technical knowledge and technology, to enable us to understand patients and their illnesses comprehensively and holistically. The aim of this system and rationale is to aid the clinician to obtain a better overall understanding of patient’s individual health status in order to provide the best possible Integrative treatment and care.
Unfortunately, this system can be difficult to implement let alone master. Traditional methods are not always supported by allopathic medical practitioners and/or modern science, which are often due to a lack of understanding of the individual therapies, and their interaction with allopathic medicine. As a result unaware conservative practitioners often dismiss these methods. There is however a possibility for both allopathic mainstream and Complementary and Alternative medicine (CAM) to coexist and work together in order to provide the best possible treatments and prognosis for our patients. For this to happen, there must be acceptance and understanding by the physician of how each individual modality fits into an integrative treatment. He or she must have the necessary training or have an awareness of the positives and the limitations of each individual healing system. The physician must also respect each individual modality and be able to explain to the patient the pros and cons of each therapy based on research and their own individual clinical practice and, most important, always keep the patients best interest at heart.
The term Integrative Medicine, resulted due to the re-emergence of CAM, to describe a practice of combining both orthodox medical practices and complementary medicine for healthcare; I guess you could say it is applying the best of both worlds in
