Descripción

This is a book about a very important subject - how to create a lifestyle where we are not lonely, especially as we grow older. As our society has changed from small rural communities and extended families to urban living and scattered families, loneliness has become a big problem for many people. This is exacerbated by the high divorce rate, as well as by the fact that women often outlive their spouses. This book is about preventing loneliness as we grow older. It’s about moving beyond our traditional ways of thinking about live-in lifestyles. It’s about a wonderful opportunity for emotional and spiritual growth - beloved companionship.

Introduction

This is a book about a very important subject - how to create a lifestyle where we are not lonely, especially as we grow older.

As our society has changed from small rural communities and extended families to urban living and scattered families, loneliness has become a big problem for many people. This is exacerbated by the high divorce rate, as well as by the fact that women often outlive their spouses.

Learning how to manage painful feelings, particularly loneliness, is an important part of emotional and spiritual growth. The Inner Bonding process, which I’ve written about in numerous books, is a powerful process for learning how to manage and take responsibility for painful feelings. This book, however, is not about managing lonely feelings - it is about preventing loneliness. It’s about moving beyond our traditional ways of thinking about live-in lifestyles. It’s about a wonderful opportunity for emotional and spiritual growth - beloved companionship.

Beloved Companionship

We all seek the wonderful experience of the sharing of love. Little else in life compares to this ultimate experience.

The problem is that we may not be able to find this sharing of love with a mate, especially as we get older. If we don’t find a mate with whom we can share love, does that mean we have to live a lonely life? Does it mean that we need to go through life never really experiencing what gives life meaning – the sharing of love?

No! But it does mean that we need to open ourselves to new ways and opportunities to share love. Beloved companionship is such a way.

Beloved companionship is not really new. The popular TV show, The Golden Girls, pointed the way for us. In this show, four women lived together as friends. They laughed, cried, fought, learned, and supported each other in their highest good. They deeply understood each other. They loved each other, and they were not lonely.

Beloved Companionship is not the same as just being roommates. We don’t have a word in our language that adequately describes this kind of relationship.

The October 2001 issue of the Utne Reader published an article called Just Friends: Thoughts on sharing your life with a friend instead of a lover, by Pagan Kennedy. The article is about Liz Canner and the author, Pagan Kennedy, who live together. Liz states that, "In the year and a half we’ve lived together in Somerville, Massachusetts, I have struggled with the namelessness of our situation. The word roommate conjures up a college dorm; it means transience and 20 years old. It does not mean love or family. Liz and Pagan have created a home together …with expensive meals, weekend guests, clean counters, flowers, art projects, activist gatherings, and a pile of old bikes on the porch, available to
