STEP 1: Make A List Of Colleges That Are Perfect For You

Choosing a college is a long but rewarding process. It takes time to find which college is the best fit for you. - Michael Joseph, VP of Enrollment Management, Valparaiso University

It is very important to select a college that is the perfect fit for you. As you are unique with your own personality, traits and choices, so is every college different from the other. You must consider a range of factors while choosing a college.

9 Criteria to base your College List selection on:

    1. Distance from home: Some students would feel comfortable staying close to home while for some a college further away from home would be more challenging and exciting. Which would you prefer?

    2. Rural/Urban: Do you like studying in a picturesque setting with the mountains, forest and river as a backdrop (eg: Dartmouth) or would you rather study in the midst of an urban, bustling metropolis (eg: NYU)?

    3. Size: Big or Small? Some students thrive in large colleges with a diverse student body while for others a small college offering personalized education is a better choice. For some, class size may also matter. Here the student-teacher ratio would be a good indicator.

    4. Program: If you have already decided your major, then choosing a college becomes a little easier as your search gets narrowed down to only those colleges offering that program. But if you are undecided on your major then you should choose a college which offers you more flexibility and allows you to declare a major after your first or even second year.

    5. Extracurricular activities: If you are a sportsperson, musician, actor, artist or into any other non-academic field, then you must choose a college which will give you an opportunity to flourish in your chosen activity. Look at the clubs and organizations on campus to get a feel of what the college is big on.

Choose a school that allows you to pursue your passion and gives you the flexibility to change your mind as you find direction. - Tom Delahunt, VP for Admission, Drake University

    6. Cost: As public colleges in the U.S. are funded by the State they are relatively cheaper, whereas private colleges get their money only from tuition fees and private donations so they are much more expensive. But this alone should not be a deterrent while applying, as private colleges give a lot of financial aid and scholarships.

    7. AA Insider: Who teaches? It is wise to find out if the classes are taught by professors themselves or if most of them are taken by Teaching Assistants (TAs) or Graduate students. We recommend asking a current student or alumnus of the University to give you the scoop on this.

    8. AA Insider: Overfull classes? You must find out if the classes you want to take are accessible. What is the process of class registration? In some colleges it is very difficult to get into the classes of your choice. Again, asking a current student or alumnus of the University would paint the true picture about this.

    9. AA Insider: High reputation? The reputation of a college is a good indicator to know how valuable its degree will be to an employer. However, also note that colleges with a higher reputation have a more competitive recruiting scene as there are more number of highly qualified candidates for a limited number of positions in the top firms.

How can you get the real scoop on all these criteria?

We wish that more students knew how important it is to dig a little deeper during the college search. - Ms. Placek, Johns Hopkins University

    1. AA Insider: Nothing will give you a better idea of whether the college is a perfect fit for you, than
