    Introduction

Out of the many issues being debated in the United States right now, one of the most hotly debated is that of Gay Marriage. There are heated arguments from both sides and numerous court cases that support the positions on both sides. The same sex marriage debate is highly polarizing and typically falls along political partisan lines. The arguments for and against gay marriage can be made both from within the context of religion, but also within the context of secular law and practice. One might think that the issue of same sex marriage is simply an issue of a definition. Or for some, a simple issue of denying the place of the Bible in the creation of secular law. While both of these are key factors, the issue is truly deep, and a thorough examination of the issue should cause one to genuinely think about what marriage is, and why it exists in modern society. Those who argue against gay marriage make a number of appeals to prove their position; ranging from scripture to evoking tradition and idealized times gone by. By many accounts, the Bible does hold a tremendously strong position against homosexuality and same sex marriage, and those who are strict followers of the Bible are hard pressed to change their minds on the issue. A secular variant of this argument appeals to the traditional design of marriage as an important pillar of Western society. They question what effects gay marriage will have on divorce rates, on the raising of children, and the overall stability of the family. Others will want to claim that gay marriage presents a slippery slope issue, where allowing gay marriage will open the door to let anyone to define marriage as anything that they want. They figure if same sex marriage is made legal, then what is stopping a person from wanting to marry their pet, an inanimate object, or their sibling? What about the issue of polygamy and polyandry? Once started down the slope where will the redifitions finally come to an end?

Those who argue for gay marriage make an appeal to civil rights, the concept of equal protection under the law that has been guaranteed in the United States since the passage of the 14th amendment into law near the close of the Civil War. While for most of Western history, marriage has been defined as one man and one woman, there is evidence of homosexuality. These efforts work primarily to de-bunk the arguments presented that gay marriage will destroy traditional marriage. There are countless stories of partners that were unable to see each other in hospitals, were unable to adopt children, and were unable to provide health coverage and or provide for their partner after death because of legal issues.

Is a Civil Union the same thing?

In examining this issue, it will become quite apparent that one of the major arguments in this case centers on the meaning and purpose of marriage and its role in society. Different ways exist to see marriage depending on your social and theological perspective. Navigating the vast expanse of terminology that exists surrounding this issue can be difficult for someone just becoming acquainted with it. Ultimately, the reader should decide what they think is the correct term to use. This guide makes every attempt to use the most neutral terms possible. As you read the information presented here, keep the above questions in your mind and seriously
