The author’s three children had grown up and his eldest had two of her own, Isobelle and Oscar. Their imagination knew no boundaries. Every cupboard was a ‘den’, a sheet draped over objects, a tent, not to mention the fun they had with their toys! The author worked on this and wrote several books around them. What a joy.

From the author ...
First a quick note about the book and the Series. In an effort to help stave off negative comments (primarily from people who don't understand what this series is about or why I write the way that I do), I am repeating what I have recently added to the Forward of PENDRAGON. The style of this series is light and fun, adventure/fantasy, filled with wonder and just a dash of romance. It is first and foremost character driven and as such, there will oftentimes be considerable dialogue as opposed to descriptive imagery. Requirements for reading will be a sense of adventure and a sense of humor, a willingness to laugh and cry, and you must be one who enjoys getting to know memorable characters. This is not hardcore Arthurian, so be forewarned: if you are a more serious student of King Arthur legend and lore, then this probably isn't for you, as there are better books and series out there in that regard. Chances are, you will hate it. However, if you are the type who likes to kick back and enjoy a warm, feel-good read, then this series will be right up your alley. Now let's get to the book itself.
Welcome to Camelot!
Upon completing Part Two of the Second Chance Series of novels, (ending in Book 6: AVALON), the world of King Arthur and Camelot was so well received by so many and was so much fun to write, I decided at that time a spin-off series was in order. I had never planned on it - never even thought about it. I just never before realized how much fun one could have in that rich and timeless setting. But as it turned out, I have never had more fun writing in my entire life than I did in bringing Arthur and Guinevere together, along with the wonderfully delightful characters inside of Castle Camelot. Not to mention that many people requested to know more about the world of Arthur and Guinevere and Camelot. And so it was that the idea of Tales From Camelot was born.
This particular book is in fact, largely based upon Second Chance Book 6: AVALON Part 1, but with the plotline removed as it relates to the Second Chance series. Thus, this one was written some time before the Tales For Camelot series was conceived and planned and mapped out. But fear not, there are no plot issues or concerns to worry about; it fits in perfectly like a glove and your favorite Camelot characters are all here. It is, however, primarily a singular story; namely that of bringing together Arthur and Guinevere. Plus further development in little Morgan's story. Now, I will say right up front, this one will have a bit of a fairytale-esque feel to it. Not because the other Second Chance series is fairytale-ish, but because of how and why this particular story fit into the overall grand scheme of things of what was going on in that series at the time. This book will also be unique in that it is heavy on dialogue and weak on descriptive imagery, especially in the early chapters. It might take a little bit of getting used to, but eventually the descriptive form will return as the story progresses. The style of the rest of the books in this Camelot series will in fact, be more in line with what you came to know in PENDRAGON. One of these days I may consider doing a mild re-write, so that it feels more like the rest of the Camelot books. But for now, I think it works. I think you will survive if you can get through the first five chapters, and it should begin to flow a little better after that; and hopefully suck you into the story by that time. And the story will always remain the same, regardless either way.
To repeat what I mentioned in the forward for PENDRAGON, after a lot of research for AVALON, I chose to draw from the earlier Arthurian legends, rather than the latter (latter meaning adulterous Guinevere & Lancelot, evil Morgan, etc.). For in the earlier Welsh writings, poems and ballads, Guinevere was virtuous and good; and Morgan le Fay was actually an innocent victim of abuse who was rescued and brought in under her big brother's protective wing. Original legends state that Morgan was the youngest of three sisters - Elaine being the eldest and Morgause being the middle sister. I have chosen to go with those earlier variations: Morgan is good, Morgause is the evil sorceress, and Elaine is more or less a neutral peacemaker between the two. I will not be delving into Arthur's and Morgan's two sisters at this particular juncture; you will meet Elaine and Morgause later on in CHAMPION and SORCERESS. And in time, as more of Arthur’s family is found and discovered, we will indeed be seeing more of Uther and Igraine. Although we won't be seeing more of them in this particular story; that's more for later on in the next two books.
Also mentioned in the forward for PENDRAGON, I have chosen to keep the story in the 5th century. Most modern Arthurian tales tend to 'cheat' and use Middle Ages/15th century concepts and customs. Gotta tell ya - 5th century life was radically different; an amalgamation of ancient Persian, Greek and Celtic cultures as Rome's western influence had not yet spread worldwide. This is when royals and nobles typically had many wives and concubines - all of who were purchased property.
Or how about where engaged couples were actually expected to live together, beginning on the first day of betrothal - but without consummation until the wedding day. Yup, I am dead serious; I kid you not. B-r-r-r-r ... seriously cold showers.
Then there is Merlin, who we finally get to know in this story. Now, if you thought there were many variations to Uther's story and background, there are even more permutations to the origins of the mysterious wizard Merlin (or Myrddin Emrys in the Welsh language). In fact, Merlin's backstory is more varied than any other Arthurian character and no two versions can agree. Of course, I have my own version. (wink). I'll explain more in a moment; but before I can continue, there are four important characters you should know about in advance, being that this is something of a spin-off of the Second Chance series. Namely two ancient men and their wives. Not that this series is all about them as such, but you should at least be aware of their background as it has some bearing on what happens in Camelot. So here is a little bit of background on them before we get to our story. The men are named Elias and Kemuel. While their true identities are not revealed until the end of Second Chance, those identities are not crucial for the time of Camelot. But you need to know a few things about them; not the least of which is that they are both several thousand years old.
Elias and Shira
Elias (pronounced ee-lye-uhs), is the 'smart one'. You met him briefly during a cameo appearance early on in Pendragon, when he initially found and healed Regan. During the time of Arthur, he is the one who eventually comes to be known as Merlin. He is a tall man with long white hair, wearing a brown cloak and carries a staff. He has a somewhat intimidating presence. Pictured here, he has piercing gray eyes that look straight through you . . .
His 'apparent' age is fixed at around twenty years old. The reason his hair is white is because of his true age, which lost its original color after his first century.
Elias is married to a woman named Shira (pronounced sheer-uh), who is extremely beautiful and has long waist-length black hair - so black it almost seems blue. She too, has been around for as long as Elias, that is for several thousand years. And like Elias, she too is youthful in appearance. Although she has never particularly cared for white hair, so she has been dying it her natural blue-black color for centuries.
Elias is unique in that he possesses powers, such as the ability to travel through time, control weather, raise people from the dead and produce food out of thin air, just to name a few.
Elias is also very wise and many have sought his wise counsel over the centuries. He also sometimes has a bit of a temper, especially as it relates to protecting his family. For Elias and Shira had a single daughter many thousands of years ago, and as a result of their one child, a line of female descendants came into being; all with the same blue-black hair of Shira; a trademark of Shira's daughters. But unlike Elias and Shira, they have normal lifespans. Each generation has a single daughter, and only one daughter. By the time we arrive in the 5th century during Arthur's time, the name of this particular daughter - is Guinevere.
Elias is very protective of his daughters, and can always be found in reasonably close proximity to them. The daughters of Elias and Shira affectionately refer to them as Grandfather and Grandmother (with a capital 'G'). More often than not, you will likely find Elias in the company of his daughter, Guinevere. You certainly wouldn't ever want to mess with his wife or his daughters, for that ... would be a very bad mistake.
Their daughters throughout the centuries have always been very similar in appearance with very similar characteristics, both personality-wise and physically; with the long blue-black hair, beautiful and delicate, pure in heart and innocent, decent and modest, and VERY prim and proper. As Shira's original family was from the east, her daughters have an unusual and 'exotic' look. In ancient times these features were considered rare and were highly valued and sought after; generally fetching the highest price in a world that bought and sold women as property. Of course as you might expect, Elias would always be involved in the marriage arrangements of his daughters.
Kemuel and Eddi
Kemuel (pronounced kehm-yoo-el) is the 'funny one'. He is actually the elder, as he and Eddi are both centuries older than Elias and Shira. (pronounced eh-dee - like the boy's name 'Eddie'). Very little is known about them, other than Kemuel also has long white hair, for the same reason, and Eddi dyes her hair brown.
They too, are somewhat youthful in appearance, and also have a line of descendants. Unlike Elias and Shira, their descendants are more numerous and are both male and female. Whereas Guinevere is a descendant of Elias, enter Arthur Pendragon, a descendant of Kemuel (through his mother Igraine).
The common characteristics of Kemuel's descendants are that they are generally more action-oriented, risk-taking and fearless; they are the action heroes of our stories. They are often warriors with strong and colorful personalities; especially the women. There is also a unique branch of Kemuel's family tree, where the women sometimes function as sort of the guardian protectors of Shira's daughters. You will be meeting one of them in particular in Book 3: CHAMPION.
While Kemuel also has the ability to travel through time, he doesn't exhibit any of the other powers or abilities that Elias possesses. Neither of the wives, Shira and Eddi possess any special abilities, other than centuries of gained wisdom.
As first mentioned, Kemuel is the 'funny one'. Whereas Elias is more straight and 'stiff' as Kemuel sometimes teases, Kemuel tends to be more of merry sort of individual; one who finds humor in just about anything and everything and is an occasional practical joker. And sometimes, you're not even sure if he is from the past, present or future. But that's part of the fun with Kemuel.
Incidentally, as you will soon learn that while Guinevere has known Elias and Shira all of her life, Arthur knows nothing about them or anything about Kemuel and Eddi or his unique heritage.
As a side note, throughout the stories, the two lines of the families are often represented by two sets of colors: blue and black for Elias' daughters (fitting for their notable hair), and red and black for Kemuel's descendants (House Pendragon in the time of Arthur).
Dream
Dream is the realm where Elias and Kemuel can travel from one part of the world to another, or from one point in time to another. Very little is known about Dream at this juncture, other than Elias and Kemuel can disappear into thin air in a fine white mist and reappear somewhere else - or 'somewhen' else - simply by traveling in Dream. And it certainly helps add to Merlin's mystique!
Excalibur
I usually like to include detailed notes at the end of each book, and there will be more about Excalibur after the story. However it was revealed in the middle of the Second Chance series that Excalibur was forged in Dream long before the time of man. Only those of the line and blood of either Elias or Kemuel may hold and wield the sword; anyone else will be burned if they touch it. The wielder of the sword can cause it to 'flame on' at will.
Chaverim the Raven
Not referred to very often, Chaverim is a mysterious large black raven who seems to be watching over the two families (in a good way). Elias and Kemuel know him personally. But other than that, we know very little else about him.
Fallow
Fallow is an evil demon creature who has plagued the two family lines of Elias and Kemuel for centuries. Whenever you hear a bad guy going Good, good, yes, yes.
, that's your tip-off that you're dealing with Fallow. ;)
Conflux
The uniting together of the two families of Elias and Kemuel, such as the eventual marriage of Arthur and Guinevere, ushers in what Kemuel calls a Conflux
- a very extraordinary time in which great things take place, oftentimes of global consequence. As the phrase goes, Things change, times change, rules change.
And the time of Camelot certainly does and will bring about some amazing and wonderful changes.
Final Comments
So now you have a little insight into Merlin's historical background, prior to the time setting of Camelot. Once again to reiterate, this series is not about them or their prior history so much, as it about the time and era of King Arthur and House Pendragon; and that is where this series will remain. Arthur and Guinevere will always be the king and queen on the chessboard of Camelot, and House Pendragon will always be where our primary focus remains. Nevertheless, armed with this knowledge of Merlin's ancient past, it will make it much more interesting as we learn how he does indeed become the infamous wizard of legend.
Now, while it is true that a sizable portion of this particular book is fact a love story - I mean, come on! It's Arthur and Guinevere! But guys, I also tried to make it a lot of fun and entertaining for you, too. If I did my job right, it will be as enjoyable for you as I know this will be for the ladies. I hope you enjoy your journey into the wonderful world of Camelot.

Map of Pretania
~ Nobles & Gatherings ~
Prologue
Long ago in a misty land known as Pretania, a young handmaiden by the name of Katelyn was lovingly and devotedly brushing through the long rich black tresses of the High Queen; hair that was so black it almost seemed blue. The beautiful Queen's name was Guinevere and the two women were the closest of friends.
The High Queen was sitting in a comfortable velvet-cushioned chair in her private quarters, looking out a large open window over the resplendent spring countryside of rolling forested hills and meadows covered with flowers. The picturesque landscape was dotted with many pre-medieval 5th century villages consisting primarily of timber-frame homes and shops. Also visible from the Queen's upper room of Castle Camelot, were occasional clusters of larger stone homes, indicating wealthier living conditions.
To the east just beyond the castle walls was a very large festive and colorful bazaar. Like a small fair, there were hundreds of merchant tents and tables lining the streets, filled with artwork and jewelry and clothing and shoes and food and sweets and games and all sorts of wonderful and beautiful things. The crowded was quite popular; attracting locals, visitors and tourists from near and afar.
Oh, stop fussing over me, Katelyn.
Guinevere sighed. I am quite capable of brushing my own hair.
My Lady has not seen His Majesty the King in over a week. He returns this day from his trip to the northern kingdoms. Do you not wish to make an impression?
Of course I do.
smiled Guinevere. I always strive to look my best for Arthur.
In truth, m'Lady, you do always make a favorable impression upon His Majesty. It is no secret he loves you very much.
And I love him more, dear Katelyn. Not a day goes by which he does not give me reason to love him more.
Would Your Majesty indulge me with a small request?
Guinevere smiled and shook her head. You wish to hear how Arthur and I came to be together ... again!?
It is a beautiful story, m'Lady! I would hear it a hundred times if you were willing!
Katelyn! It has not even been a hundred days since the wedding!
It was a most beautiful and memorable wedding, m'Lady!
Katelyn sighed, dreamily. It is still the talk of all the kingdom!
Really, Katelyn? What do you hear?
What you and His Majesty have done ... it has changed everything!
For the better, I hope?
Oh, yes, m'Lady! Very much so!
Tell me, Katelyn; what are people saying? What do you hear?
I shall tell you, m'Lady...
Katelyn teased, ...if you shall tell me.
Yes, dear Katelyn.
Guinevere smiled with a twinkle in her eye. I shall tell you again the story of how Arthur and I came to be together. Again.
Start at the beginning, m'Lady! And do not leave anything out!
The beginning?
Begin when His Majesty first became king!
Guinevere raised her eyebrow. This shall make for a long story, Katelyn.
It is morning and his Majesty does not arrive until sundown. We have much time.
Guinevere laughed at her handmaiden. Oh, very well. If you insist.
Oh, I insist, m'Lady.
Shall I begin with the funeral?
M'Lady, does it trouble you to speak of the passing of King Uther?
No. I had only met Arthur's father once as a small girl when my father came to visit this region. I did not know the man. In truth, Arthur did not know his father well, either.
Sir Bors...
Yes, Katelyn. Sir Bors, a great giant of a man, the Battlemaster of the Knights, and the Commander General of all of our armed forces, was more of a caring father to Arthur than ... his father.
Then His Majesty has had a good father in the person of Sir Bors.
Guinevere smiled tenderly at Katelyn. It is as you say. Arthur knew his father little and had never known his mother. But it is because of the caring of Sir Bors that Arthur has turned out such as he has.
How did Sir Bors come to be...
Katelyn, we have only until sundown before Arthur returns. That story shall have to wait for another time.
Of course, m'Lady.
Katelyn grinned, sheepishly.
Now. I shall begin our story with the funeral of the former High King Uther.
May I continue brushing your hair , m'Lady?
Katelyn, it is not needful to...
I love brushing your hair, m'Lady! It is most beautiful and I could brush it all day!
Guinevere sighed at her handmaiden. Katelyn...
Yes, m'Lady?
You ... are a treasure to me.
Thank you, m'Lady. And you, m'Lady, are a treasure to everyone in Camelot. Even the whole kingdom!
Guinevere laughed. I think I had better begin my story, before your baseless flattery threatens to go to my head. Now. Where do I begin? Ah, yes. It was two years ago...
Chapter 1
I do not wish to attend the funeral, Bors. Why may I not remain here?
I am sorry, young pup. It is your duty.
I do not wish to remember my father in this manner.
It is a time to honor your father and his legacy. It is important for you to remember such things.
I prefer to remember other things.
Things such as?
I prefer to remember the times we were together; my father and I. You of all people know how few those times were.
It is true.
Bors, I truly do understand the importance of such things as honor and legacy.
Yes, I know that you do.
But I find the rare times with my father to be of greater value.
You are very different from Uther, young pup.
Perhaps. But he was my father, still.
He cared a great deal for his kingdom.
I care less about his kingdom.
Your kingdom now, Arthur Pendragon.
Must we speak of that now? My father is not even yet buried.
Would you have your sister face this time alone?
Arthur sighed. No, Bors. You know I would never wish that upon her.
You are the only family she has left.
You are right. I was not thinking of Morgan; I am ashamed.
You care deeply for your sister.
You of all people know that I do. As you have spoken, she and I are all that remain of our family.
You cared for her while you still had your father.
Very much so. As you well know, she did not have a ... pleasant ... experience from her ... other family. I still do not know much of what happened to her while she lived among them.
Her mother tried to protect her until her passing; when Morgan was very young. After that ... you do not want to know what happened, after that.
Someday I intend to find out, Bors. I swear they shall know retribution for what harm they have caused my sister. For now ... all I can do is show her kindness in her new home - as I have sought to do for the past three years.
And as such, she has always been fond of you. Indeed, you are the only one she would speak to for the first year.
Yes, it was during that first year that she refused to sleep anywhere except upon the floor near my bed.
I remember it took us another year to wean her away from your floor to the bed in her own room, even though it was next to your room.
Arthur chuckled. You were not so successful, Bors. She sleeps in my room, still.
What!?
Not always, but more often than not, I shall see her on the floor near my bed. By morning, she is always gone. She does not think I know, and I have never spoken of it to her.
You have a good heart, young pup. I have always believed such. It is truth that you care not for your father's kingdom. Rather you care more for the people within the kingdom.
Such flattery shall not gain you access to our kitchen's pantry, Sir Bors. We must draw the line, somewhere.
You wound me deeply, Your Majesty.
Do not even consider calling me such a thing! I shall have you removed from the supper table this very night!
And who would you have attempt to do such a dangerous thing ... as prevent me from my meal?
Arthur grinned. I shall, of course!
Bors shot out a hand and grabbed Arthur by the ear.
OUCH! UNHAND YOUR KING!
Nay. Not unless my King withdraws his portentous threat.
I shall not! Even upon loss of ear!
The giant-sized man standing 7'4 tall smiled and let go.
I am sorry, young pup; but in the presence of other rulers, kings and dignitaries, I shall henceforth be referring to you as protocol demands."
Protocol be damned; my name is Arthur.
Speak such words again and I shall most certainly turn you over my knee!
You have not turned me over your knee since I was four years of age! What makes you think you could catch me now, old Knight?
Nevertheless, young pup, upon arrival at your father's grave, I shall indeed address you as befitting a king.
Arthur sighed.
I am sorry this has befallen you at this time; you are now but of fifteen years of age.
Bors?
Yes?
Suddenly with tears in his eyes, Arthur threw his arms around the giant man. Thank you, Bors.
Bors nodded and patted Arthur's head, trying to hold back a tear of his own.
You have been as a father to me.
No, young pup! Do not speak of this! You are a Pendragon. Constantine was your Grandsire! Red and black are your colors. You are of royal blood; you must never consider otherwise.
Have I ever spoken of my dislike of your lectures, Bors?
Not since this morning, you have not.
Arthur finally let go and stepped back. Thanks, Bors. I just needed ... you know.
More than you know, young pup. More than you know.
Bors, do you believe the rumors that my father was poisoned?
I have already told you many times; they are only rumors.
Have you learned if the rumors are true?
They may be true or they may not; no one knows this for certain.
Will there be many rulers, kings and dignitaries this day? Or a few?
Many, I am afraid.
Must I give a voice?
They shall understand of your grief. You are not expected to speak.
That is good; I could not bear it.
I am afraid, however; that others shall be expected to speak.
Awww ... more speeches again!?
It is tragic, indeed.
Do they not realize no one hears them!?
No, I do not believe that they do.
Perhaps Morgan does not have to go. Then we may both stay and...
In truth she does not desire attendance, as well.
Of course not; her other family shall be in attendance.
Yes, I am afraid so.
Poor Morgan. She is still most terrified of them.
Then I suggest you keep her close by and not let her from your sight.
I intend to do no less. But must we really attend?
Suddenly a small voice came from behind Arthur. Yes, brother. We must attend.
MORGAN! I did not see you standing there!
Am I ... intruding, brother?
Arthur smiled at his younger half-sister. Though she was almost fourteen years of age ... the age which was considered appropriate for childbearing ... she was smaller and looked more like an eight-year-old child - due to many years of malnutrition and unspeakable abuse. Like Arthur, she had brown hair; although hers was longer, darker and more curly. She wore a simple and unadorned, mousy-brown dress, and standing in the doorway with her very pale skin, she appeared timid and frail.
Of course not, sister! You are never intruding!
Oh.
Morgan, is that what you are going to wear?
Is this ... not proper?
No, it is not that ... it is just...
Arthur sighed. Morgan, what am I going to do with you? You are much prettier than this!
I am not ... pretty.
Yes, you are Morgan. And do not argue with me or you shall discover another lizard in your bed this night.
Morgan smiled at him. You see? I knew it was you!
I admit no such thing.
Have you nothing better to do than torment your half-sister?
Morgan, I have told you to stop calling yourself that. You are my sister; not my half-sister.
We share the same mother, no more.
We share the same mother, that is enough. Under this roof, there are no halves; only wholes. You are my sister; never forget this.
Then Arthur grinned. Or else you shall regret it. Perhaps a salamander this time...
Morgan laughed. I shall try to remember, brother.
I like hearing you laugh. I do not hear it often enough.
I have known ... little of such things.
Three years have you been with us. Surely you have known of such things in that time?
Yes, brother.
Morgan smiled. I have known of such things in that time.
Well, then ... you see? I shall hear no more of your reasons to not hear you laugh or see you smile. That ...
Arthur looked over at Bors and grinned. ...shall be my very first commandment as king.
Morgan grinned. Thank you ... Your Majesty.
Oh, no, no, no! Do not dare speak this to me! You may call me Arthur. Or brother. Or handsome. Those titles alone are acceptable.
Thank you ... brother.
Ahh ... so not handsome?
Morgan giggled.
Bors, when must we leave?
Arthur asked.
Very soon.
Do we have time to find my sister a prettier dress?
Of course.
Why do you not approve of my dress, brother?
You are nearly fourteen years of age, sister. Soon you shall be the envy of all the men in Camelot.
Arthur, do not tease me so; it is not appreciated.
I am serious, Morgan. You are very pretty.
I am not and you know it.
You are and I know it.
You are most stubborn, brother.
That I am.
And you are blind.
Already my blind eyes have seen the eyes of two Knights looking upon you favorably, dear sister.
Morgan gasped. You have seen no such thing!
I would never lie to you, Morgan.
I do not believe you.
Believe me or not, I speak the truth.
I care not for such things.
Morgan...
Speak no further of this to me.
Morgan ... not all men are ... bad.
Please, Arthur; do not. It is not appreciated. Or wanted.
Arthur sighed, and thought to himself for a moment. Then he took Morgan's hand and kissed her on the forehead. Someday, sister; you shall see I speak the truth.
The dress I wear is adequate, Arthur. I do not wish to wear something ... pretty.
Very well. May I at least ... stand beside you? At the funeral?
Thank you, brother. I would welcome this.
Chapter 2
Later that day at the funeral
Gurgle. Gurgle.
Was that your stomach!?
whispered Morgan.
Sorry. I did not eat before we came.
I should scold you, but I grow hungry as well.
You!? Grow hungry!? I did not think you ate at all!
I did not think you ceased to eat, brother.
No, that is Bors you speak of.
Ahem.
I am sorry, Bors; I did not mean for you to hear that.
I am standing right behind you.
I know that.
Arthur snickered.
How can you speak thus at such a time as this?
said Morgan.
My father's rites were held four hours ago. We are long past 'such a time as this'. It is now only speeches about nothing and these speeches are becoming tiresome. I wish it were over.
You are a most unusual man, Arthur Pendragon.
Of that there is no doubt.
whispered Bors.
Morgan grinned. I do not think that was intended well, brother.
I heard nothing but hot air, sister. Of what are you referring to?
Morgan giggled.
Sssssh!
exclaimed a scowling noblewoman at Morgan, a short distance away behind them.
Arthur glared at her. Do not think to silence my sister!
he growled at her.
The noblewoman's eyes suddenly widened in fear. Forgive me, Your Majesty! I did not know it was you!
Yes, I am soon to be your new king. And do not forget who my sister Morgan is, either.
Yes, Your Majesty! Of course, Your Majesty!
Very well. You are forgiven. Let it not happen, again.
No, Your Majesty! Never again!
Arthur turned and scowled at the new diplomat who had just come up to begin his dialogue about the greatness of King Uther. It is not that I disagree with the respect they offer my father. But their true motives is to draw attention to themselves. This is most ... detestable. I do not wish to remain here much longer.
Then Arthur looked at Morgan, who was looking at him with wide eyes. What? What did I say?
I ... I ... nothing.
Morgan, what is it? Does something trouble you?
I ... I have never before had someone ... speak on my behalf ... as you have just done.
Huh? Oh. That. Well...
Then Arthur noticed that she was looking at him adoringly. Listen, Morgan. I do not know of all the things which happened to you before you came to us. But know this - you are my sister. And no one ... shall ever ... hurt you again. Do you understand?
Morgan nodded.
Except ... maybe Bors.
Morgan's eyes widened even further.
You are so skinny! It is a wonder he has not mistaken you for something to pick his teeth with!
What!?
Bors started snickering.
Arthur?
What?
Morgan leaned over and kissed him on the cheek. I think you shall make a good king.
A king with a sister of skin and bones.
Morgan smiled at him. Sometimes...
Sometimes ... what?
Sometimes I wish...
You wish what?
Morgan blushed. Nothing. It is unimportant.
Arthur raised his eyebrow.
Do you think they shall be done, soon?
Morgan said, quickly looking away towards the current speaker.
So you admit I am handsome, after all.
I have said no such thing!
Morgan?
What?
I would have you know that I have sometimes wished the same of you.
What!?
I speak the truth.
Really!?
Arthur smiled at her. Yes. Really.
Morgan smiled back at him. Thank you, brother. You have brought me ... much joy, on this day of sorrows.
*** *** ***
Two days later…
Knock. Knock.
Who is there?
Morgan? It is Arthur.
Morgan ran over and opened the door to her private castle suite where she spent the great majority of her time. Brother! I am so pleased to see you!
I have more bad news, I am afraid.
Of what do you speak?
It has only been two days since we have survived the long speeches of my father's funeral.
Morgan smiled. Was it so bad?
Being with my favorite sister was not so bad.
Morgan giggled. What is this bad news you speak of?
Tomorrow there is to be an official proclamation of the new king.
Yes, I have heard.
There shall be more speeches.
This is troubling news, indeed, brother.
she smiled again.
Will you be attending the proclamation?
This would depend. Who is to be this new king?
You make another joke! This is a good thing.
I look forward to the proclamation of our new king, brother.
Would you sit beside me?
WHAT!? ME!?
You are my only family. I would have my sister at my side.
I … I … I … I am sorry, Arthur. I cannot.
But why!?
I would be most honored to be at your side. But … it would not be right for me to be seen with you at your proclamation.
Why not!?
You know my … other family … opposes you as heir.
I still do not believe that Gorlois is your true father, nor his four sons your true bothers. But yes, I know of this. They have never been … favorable of my father. They have even managed to convince the King of Cadwell that my father took our non-royal peasant mother against her will by force and that I not a legitimate heir.
I know not, if the things they have spoken of your father are true.
said Morgan. But from what I know of Uther's son … I must now believe the things spoken have been false.
Morgan, I cannot believe my father would ever do something so evil as to commit rape. I knew his heart; he was not an evil man. He loved our mother.
Morgan looked into Arthur's eyes for a long time. I … I believe you, Arthur. Then such stories must be false. Nevertheless, now you understand why I cannot be seen with you.
No, Morgan. I still do not understand. You are safe, now. No one can hurt you again.
I do not have concern for myself. It is you whom I worry for. There is a great evil in the house of Gorlois; Luella and I both felt it the entire time we were there. And I believe this evil seeks your destruction. If they see me with you, I know it shall be much worse for you.
One father and four brothers? I think Bors alone can stand against that many.
But not against the evil behind them.
Morgan, I do not fear evil.
You SHOULD fear evil, brother.
No, Morgan. I should not. Nor should you. Not any longer. You do not need to fear the evil. It is a snare – a trap – a lie; something of Shadow, not of truth.
What do you know of Shadow?
I know … something of Shadow. I have fought Shadow before. But I do not fear it. I know that Shadow is nothing more than the source of lies. It is the truth, that sets us free.
I … I want to believe you, Arthur.
"Morgan … I know you have never before had reason to trust another. Especially … men. But you have now lived in my home for
