About this ebook

New York City Boxing Directory (1885-1960) was compiled from countless pages of New York City directories and U.S. Censuses from the 19th and 20th Centuries. Readers and reference enthusiasts may use the eBook to delve into additional family research. Address information is useful for tracking down old neighborhoods, businesses, and where deceased individuals lived. Especially prominent in the text are names of Jewish, Irish, and Italian men who worked as boxers, boxing instructors, promoters, and gym operators. Also compiled in the directory are addresses of former boxing periodicals and pugilist organizations. I think that many promoters I have included likely worked in theatrical productions as well as sports. Names included in the eBook are from all boroughs of New York City, i.e. Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Long Island, the Bronx, and Staten Island. The homes of promoters were sometimes in New Jersey, Connecticut, and even California. I hope that libraries will consider including my directory as a helpful resource for their patrons. It will certainly save users much time and effort in their own research.

New York City Boxing Directory (1885-1960) - Robert Grey Reynolds, Jr

    New York City Boxing

    Directory (1885-1960)

    Robert Grey Reynolds Jr.

    Smashwords Edition 2012

This is an alphabetical list of names I have researched from New York City Directories from 1885-1960. I have provided name info, year(s) listed in city directories, the person or business occupational title, and business and home addresses for all individuals and companies included. For the listings of the 1950s and 1960 phone numbers are given.

Some of the promoters and gyms may not have been affiliated with pugilism. However, it is likely that many of them were. This is especially probable given the popularity of boxing from the late 19th century through the early to mid 20th century.

Readers who desire to continue the research begun by me, can utilize the boxing directory in several ways. For example, individuals and businesses are listed under references at the end of the text. The page numbers taken from annual U.S. City Directories for the New York City Metropolitan area are provided at the end of each individual reference.

The ancestry of boxing affiliated persons listed in my directory can be explored further. This can be done by utilizing various ancestry websites and databases. Residence and business addresses provide users with additional advantages. Addresses can be a springboard to discover land information.
