About this ebook

Games systems used to be simple--plug into TV, put in game cartirage, power on...and occasionally spend several minutes plugging dust out and putting it in at just the right angle! Today game systems are more than game systems--they are multi-media powerhouses. In the case of PS3, it is a full on computer.

This guide will help you get the most out of your PS3 and everything that's built into it--from adjusting parental settings to changing the way it looks.

    Introduction

Since its debut in late 2006, Sony’s PlayStation 3 has slowly inched its way up to the top of the home console food chain. An amazingly powerful device, the list of things the PS3 can do just keeps growing longer and longer. It’s not just a video game console – it’s also a top-notch Blu-Ray/DVD player, a capable stereo system, a video streaming device, a social network, and an all-around home entertainment hub. In Sony’s own words: "It only does everything."

If you haven’t experienced all that the PlayStation 3 has to offer yet, now just might be the best time to start—the cost of entry has fallen significantly since it was first introduced, and the hardware has been tested and perfected in millions of homes around the world. There’s also an entire ecosystem of exciting games and top-notch accessories to choose from, helping to make sure that you’ll stay excited about the PS3 for years to come.

This guide will teach you all the ins and outs of the PlayStation 3, giving you the tools you need to fully take advantage of the console. Once we’re done, you’ll be well on your way to turning your living room into the sleekest, most powerful digital hub you could possibly dream of.

    Are you ready? Let’s go!

Part One: Getting Started With Your PlayStation 3

    Different Configurations

Since its release, the PS3 has come in a bunch of different flavors—different size hard drives, outstanding game bundles, even the device itself has gone through a couple of iterations. If you’re buying the PS3 new, you’ll be getting what’s referred to as the slim version. Like the name implies, the slim PS3 is a little smaller than the original fat version. They’ve packed most of the original features into the tinier frame, but there are a few differences.

First, they’ve eliminated the ports for connecting Compact Flash, SD, and Sony’s proprietary Memory Stick cards. Thankfully, they’ve kept the USB ports. We’ll explain everything you can do with USB a little later.

Sony has also eliminated backwards compatibility with the previous version of the console, the PlayStation 2. Your old games won’t be playable on the slim version, which could be a dealbreaker for some people. All of your really old games, the ones made for the original PlayStation, will still function just fine.

If you have an extensive PlayStation 2 game collection, you can find the early PS3 models at pretty much any used game store, though it’s vital to remember that you’ll be getting a used device that may not last as long as a new device will. Sony, just like Microsoft with the Xbox 360, experienced some hardware hiccups at the beginning, so it’s only fair to warn you: if you buy your PS3 used, you could be more susceptible to what’s known as the Yellow Light of Death. That’s a problem you don’t want to have.

For this guide, we’re going to assume that you’ve bought one of the packages currently available, which includes any of the following:

    PlayStation 3 160gb

    PlayStation 3 320gb

    PlayStation 3 Uncharted 3 Bundle

    PlayStation 3 Call of Duty
