He woke to her hair stroking gently against his face. Her face emerged like that of an angel with a beautiful smile and a silky voice that slinked into him with the same ease as her perfume...

Good Morning Mr. Paterson...Good morning, she repeated...

It was like a lovely dream, but a familiar back-pain brought him to life...She was tucking in the bed sheets now, and straightening them out, and there was a brief dreadful realisation of where he was...

It's a beautiful morning, bright and sunny...Can't you see it?......

He cleared his throat, You're too good at this...People'll talk......

Oh, we can't have that, she said, It wouldn't be right,...She smiled as she spoke...

Maybe it is right, he said, and she smiled...She always let him flirt a little...It was harmless, if not considered professional...

    They'll be serving breakfast soon......

Breakfast at the 'Old Crusties Hotel'......he added...

Hey! she said, You're the lucky one...I don't get to eat for hours yet......

    Yeah, I know...You're on a diet...

    See you there......

Once, many years ago, he remembered, he had awakened well from a good sleep...at home...his family home...His adoptive mother had been working in the kitchen and he could hear her from his nearby bedroom...

He allowed himself to shut his eyes and go into rest for now. He was seventeen years old...He had wakened with an idea...This was the summer break and he was on holiday from school...Why not walk it to his mother's house, some sixty plus miles away?...He could stop off at youth hostels along the way...It wouldn't cost much money...and would be an achievement and an adventure...

He had been separated from his mother for some thirteen years even by then, but there had been some informal and amicable contact...She would be happy to see him and would put him up on arrival for a few days...

There had been a euphoric skip in his heart that morning, like something from a story...and a bright sun had shone in through his bedroom window...just like now...

His adoptive mother had thought it was a good idea...There had been tentative but successful contact between those two...She didn't think there could be too much of a
