Grammar?

Grammar can be viewed as a body of rules that we use to describe the structure of written and spoken expression/communication (courtesy Wikipedia). The English Club (www.englishclub.com) highlights that language came before the rules so grammar should instead be viewed as a system on which we can base expression. An ongoing discussion with a friend highlights that functional literacy is more important than compliance with a strict rule structure.
