About this ebook

Today we have a myriad of electronic technologies for the business of communication. But when it comes to the manager standing on his own two feet, standing up and communicating personally, eye-ball to eye-ball and making his, or her, point verbally and with the correct body language? Leadership in management is all about communication as an interpersonal skill– effectively getting the message across personally so that delegated tasks are properly done. But also in such a way as the manager is recognized and respected by subordinates who will willingly crank on all of the steam they can give.

PART ONE will teach you what is effective communication, what barriers stand in the way, and techniques you can use for correct communication. You will learn the skills of Active Listening, recognizing body language and “cluster cues” and using Open, Closed and Probing Questions.

PART TWO will teach you motivational techniques used by managers who understand that profitable and productive work has to be done through willing and helpful subordinates who enjoy being part of the team. Learn “Behavioural Theory” and how to apply the most powerful techniques discussed in 22 Practical Steps to Promote Motivation.

    Conclusion

Communication... probably the most important skill that a leader can have because it's useless to have vision, creative ideas, great motivation, power and authority to delegate, assertiveness, negotiation skills and all of the other skills of management, if you can't communicate. If you cannot communicate, you simply can't lead... everything else you've learnt about leadership stops with you...the ball remains in your court.

Today we hear about telecommunications by landline, mobile, by fax and by modem. We transmit messages by email and text messages by satellite. We can air our views on Facebook, Twitter and a host of other social media. We can communicate through the internet and walk and talk in Cyberspace. We interact and communicate through video games and we participate through computer-tech in virtual reality. Our computers even chat merrily away with each other whilst we sleep, swopping messages while our phones record our messages.

It's truly the age of communication. But the fact remains that, at executive level, which is the level that concerns us here and now, most people don't really know how to communicate on a face-to-face, eye-ball-to eyeball, and ear-to-ear basis. That's because communication is so much more than sending out a message. When the first man landed on the moon he left behind a canister of recorded, printed and pictorial messages along with other goodwill paraphernalia sent out to convince any passing extra-terrestrials that America was a nation of goodwill-seeking people. They sent the message. But was this communication?

Not yet! Not yet because they are still waiting for a reply! Not yet because communication requires a sender and a receiver and a control system that makes sure that both have the same understanding of the message. It sounds simple enough yet communication is one of the most difficult business skills to learn.

. PART ONE of this book will give you a framework and techniques for the kind of executive communication that is demanded of you in business today. I will introduce you to the theory of good communication and the barriers that stop it happening and tell you how to tear down those barriers

PART TWO picks up on the matter of people actually wanting to carry out the assignments that you set them once the communication has supposedly taken place. A leader must have followers but how do you get people to respect and accept you and willingly crank on a little more steam? Apply the following principles and techniques of motivation to subordinates and you will find yourself also motivated and enthused about the management tasks ahead of you.

    Communication

General Eisenhower once said, Leadership is the ability to decide what has to be done, and then to get people to want to do it ...and the plain fact is that if you can't communicate what you want done and how you want it done, you can't ever assume leadership. So let’s begin by examining what is the basis of good communication and the barriers that stop people from communicating.

In my work I have been consistently made aware of how each of the many skills a leader must learn depends on at least one other skill. But the skill of communication, or rather the several skills of communication, integrate with every other skill that you need to master to become an effective leader. Your every action and reaction sends out a message that will be received favourably or unfavourably by those people whom you have chosen to be your
