Inside The Entrepreneur's Mind - Gary Gorman
Foreword by Tamsen Garrie
Michael Gerber wrote in his book, The E-Myth, that contrary to the belief that most businesses are started by entrepreneurs, the majority of businesses are in reality started by practitioners - people who are both passionate about and highly skilled at their specific craft. What sets those who succeed in business apart from those who struggle is entrepreneurial spirit, but what does that mean? And is it something we can learn, or is it something we are born with?
As Gary demonstrates in this book, being entrepreneurial is multifaceted. It is as much about attitude as it is about behaviour and it is possible to possess some entrepreneurial attributes whilst lacking others.
I first met Gary over three years ago at 4Networking, the UK National Business Networking Organisation for which I was the Network Director. His understanding of marketing and sales was clear and his reputation as a sales trainer and mentor preceded him.
In the years since we met, Gary has developed from a one-man-band service provider into a bona fide business man and with seven years under his belt, he is clearly applying entrepreneurship. But, again, what does that actually mean?
In this book, Gary interviews 21 remarkable business owners, all with different backgrounds, different motivations, different challenges and different takes on what makes an entrepreneur! As a collective, what comes across is that entrepreneurship is about commercial acumen, leadership, risk and resilience. It’s about vision and passion, belief and energy. And it’s about creativity and innovation, adaptability and perseverance.
Not one of these business owners claim to possess all of these things, but they do share some key things in common and having been in business for 5 and a half years myself and having worked with hundreds of business owners, I know only too well how important these commonalities are.
I have known many talented people fail in business because of a lack of entrepreneurial spirit and it has been a personal goal of mine to continually develop this in myself so that I can stay ahead of the game whilst continuing to add value to my clients.
Like the business owners in this book, I have done this by being clear about my values, about how I add value and why I went into business for myself. I am clear about the people I want to work with and why and I have committed to taking responsibility for my own success. With that comes a drive to learn and develop my own skills whilst seeking answers and support with the things I don’t know from those that do. And lastly, I have not given up! This is true of all 21 of the people featured in this book and they are an inspiration for others in
