About the Author
*******
"The pain and grief of today can loom so large that one would think with certainty that I shall be crushed beneath the mere shadow of them. So when the sadness and the stress are at their greatest, I need only remember that I am owned by God. This is what is permanent while the troubles and the trials are what is temporary. No matter the outcome; no matter how great or poorly handled; no matter the shame or glory that results; what I face today is destined to pass and become nothing more than another earned bit of wisdom from a distant yesterday and an investment in a laugh for some future tomorrow." – Tom Winter
Preface
There are a number of misconceptions and misperceptions about me. I guess it’s only natural. It is human nature for people to conjure up preconceived notions when they hear that you own two businesses which operate internationally in addition to running for President of the United States. We have expectations that those terms create in our minds. While those phrases apply in my case, the reality is far from the imaginings of the picture that the words create.
Though I am a man of business, I am a creature of passion. I am moved by my beliefs and take more steps by faith than by calculated premeditation. I’ve not always been a good man; but, I am a man trying to do good things. I have not always been a principled person; but, I am a person trying to live by principles. I am not a perfect being; but, I am being perfected.
Some have wondered if my run for the Presidency of the United States was a joke or a stunt of some sort. I wanted to share this story with you so that you would know that my commitment to run was no laughing matter; and, it was not done for personal gain. I value freedom above all other things. When I am given something, I feel obligated to give in return. I have been blessed to be born in a country founded on freedom. I see this as a gift from God and from those many who made sacrifices to make sure I had it to enjoy.
A group of men, long ago, made a pledge to protect and defend the freedom that I, for many years, took for granted. Now, millions are suffering and these freedoms are being stolen from before our very eyes in broad daylight. Many are ambivalent: too preoccupied with their own lives to take action. Like victims in a prison camp, we accept that this is just the circumstances of our time and situation. We allow other men to pervert what God has given us and surrender our right to have something better. I could not face my creator, my ancestors and our fathers on the other side of this life with honor if I did not try to defend that which I hold most precious. I could not count myself among the number of patriots, who sacrificed everything, if I gave up just because the road was hard to travel.
My campaign for President relies on the actions of people. If I am to be a leader, I must take actions too. I was not raising money to make my run. I was relying on the use of social media and internet tools to execute and promote the campaign. This book was written over a period of five days when I was without my most important campaign and business tool due to a careless accident that rendered it useless. It was written with pencil in a college-ruled spiral notebook the week of July 15, 2012.
It is written about times and places; events and people. I have not included the names of those involved in the recounting of the tale. In some cases, it will be self-evident why I made this choice. In general, though, I chose to exclude the names because this was not about name dropping or creating celebrity. It is just a story about events that happened. If others want to own up to their part in this, that is a choice for them to make. It is not for me to attempt to make a name for myself at their expense or labor.
It is a story of the past few years of my life: a peek behind the curtain of one man trying to make a stand for his country; provide for his children; and, honor his God by helping others along the way. It isn’t always a pretty story. Keep in mind, as you read it, that real people – two of them children – lived it. It’s not the kind of story that one running for President wishes to share. My intention for sharing it is to challenge and, hopefully, inspire you so that, when you feel powerless and have only faith to carry you through dark and frightening times, you will feel courage. I hope that the message you take from this portion of my life is that freedom isn’t free, it is important and that, as long as you have the power to choose, you should choose freedom even if it is the more difficult road.
So many people are disheartened and dissatisfied with the state of our nation and the direction our government is taking us. They throw their hands up in defeat and say, What can I do about it?
This is the story of what I am doing. I hope it inspires you to do something. Take a stand. Demand more from our leaders by demanding better leaders. What we do here and now is important. Freedom is important. I’ve ended the book with a quote from the Movie, Braveheart, about the life of William Wallace – a common Scotsman who took a stand for freedom. As you read the words I’ve written, I want you to keep his question in your mind:
What will you do without freedom?

Chapter 1: The End
I reached for the empty cup in frustration. I had to re-boot again to clear the cache; and, I hoped that this would enable my laptop computer to establish an internet connection that would last longer than a minute. I was tired of the constant machine and equipment problems that seem to plague me since moving into this apartment a year ago. It had been just a few days over a year; and, the whole time had been marked by intermittent internet access and dropped cell phone signals. With no money to afford better equipment with more reliable service, it was a hell of a way to attempt to run a business and a campaign.
My agitation level was already higher than usual. I was behind. I had spent more time than I wanted creating a new advertisement for the campaign which I wanted to post today. It was intended to be emotionally stirring and thought provoking which meant that it needed to be just right. There were so many layers of elements to work into this collage. I wanted it to look refined but not polished. It was supposed to be a little rough to give it a bit of a raw feel. It was an artistic composition which always demands more of my time because I can get fussy about getting it the way I want it. Over the nine hours I spent on it, I
