The Silent Artist

Jonah could not figure out why the stranger was on his private property. Now, granted, if there was going to be a trespasser into his land of solitude there really could not have been a more attractive one… but that did not negate the fact he disliked approaching strangers.

She – the attractive trespasser – sat by the stream that marked the border of Jonah’s land. She sat upright with a sketchpad on her knee; her long brown hair partially blocking her face from his view. The brown-haired woman was staring up into a tree by the water, and Jonah could only assume she was looking for something to draw.

Jonah frowned – attractive or not, he did not appreciate tourists who could not stick to the hiking paths, even if they chose to immortalize some part of his land.

It was time that he shooed her away.

Hey, Jonah said, his voice causing two small birds to take flight.

The woman did not acknowledge him whatsoever; instead she began to sketch shapes onto the pad she held.

Frowning, Jonah said a little louder, Hey lady.

Again she did not acknowledge him, and Jonah began to wonder if she might be deaf.

Purposefully Jonah strode up to the woman with every intention of telling her to leave. She did not acknowledge his presence until he was standing within a couple of inches of her. Only then did she look up. For a moment Jonah was captivated by the most stunning green eyes he had ever seen.

He opened his mouth, and instead of the sharp order he had intended to bark, he asked quietly, Who are you?
