About this ebook
i was asked some years ago to sort out a very tired hotel on the side of loch ness for the ex-wife of a very close friend.
she had been given the hotel by her second husband as part of their divorce settlement, never having seen and not realising that the building and contents were a complete shambles, in addition she had never run a hotel or a catering establishment in her life.
i have skipped over the endless dramas relating to the hotel and used some of the lighter antics as a background to the story.
it had been a serious salmon fishing hotel in years gone by and still retained some of the local fishing customers, who were now enjoying the benefits of the hotels quota of fishing licences.
being an avid salmon fisherman, i listened to their stories of salmon fishing, the loch ness monster, pike and eels with fascination and interest.
the serious fishermen were all adamant that there was insufficient food within the Loch to support one large carnivore or herbivore, let alone a family of them and the monster, if one existed had to be something else.
the locals were reluctant to be pressed on their serious views, because of the commercial benefits of maintaining nessie.
some did mention various stories about eels, they are probably the least most documented fish of any size, purely because they have no commercial value, fishermen love them or hate them.
collecting all the snippets and stories of eels, with a considerable amount of research it all presented an interesting story, especially since much of the accepted information is now in doubt.
eels are supposed to migrate to the Sargasso Sea to spawn, unfortunately the sargasso sea is not an area that any form of research can be done effectively, further thoughts suggest that spawning takes place at great depth, in the deep trenches in the oceans.
female eels can and do grow to great size, whilst the males may only reach 20-30 lbs, theories that eels die after spawning, this has been said about many fish, yet the strongest can and do migrate and spawn again.
loch ness is believed to have another connection to the sea, yet the open sea is fifty miles away.
there are a lot of possibilities, a lot of myths, a lot of hearsay and unanswered questions, enjoy the book.
the names of some places and people have been changed and some, too specific details, since this story has certain aspects which are true and could be true.
