      A man gets out of prison and goes hiking in Alaska to think. Then he stumbles across a crashed Boeing 747 out in the middle of nowhere. And then...Well, it's a pretty good read, even though I got very confused at the end. It's basically an action-thriller, with a bit of sci-fi thrown in. I liked Paige more than Travis, and I liked the idea of the Whisper, but as the book becomes more and more sci-fi toward the end, my enjoyment of the story dipped accordingly. The plot kind of goes off on a "Tangent", pun intended!Honestly, I'm not exactly sure what happened at the end, which isn't a good thing. But I did like the story - but I won't read the sequel.

      The Breach is one of those books that's a real pleasure to read and draws you in from the first page to the last. A unique plot and plenty of action as well as plot twists keeps you turning the pages will into the night. Looking forward to the following book 'Ghost Country' now.

      My first introduction to author Patrick Lee was by reading "Runner" (1st novel in the series about Sam Dryden, retired special forces) which I thoroughly enjoyed. Introduction to the character of Travis Chase at first intrigued but then the novel became a little too futuristic for my taste.

      Thrillers are not my usual fare, but this one was given to me as a Christmas present a couple of years ago and so I thought I should give it a go. The writing was...not great, the characters flat and unevolving, and I'm sure that if I let myself examine the plot beyond a quick glance it would be easy to find a bucketload of holes. But. BUT. Somehow or other - reader, brace yourself - I *enjoyed* it. The story was so over-the-top ridiculous and the twists so crazy and unlikely that I couldn't help but be entertained. Normally the faults I listed above would have me running in any direction that constituted Away, but I just kept wondering what could possibly happen next. So, high literature it most certainly ain't, and don't expect much at all from the characters, but the plotline itself is worth the teeth-gritting in the other categories. Guardedly recommended.

      Please note: I read and reviewed this in 2010 from a copy I received from Amazon Vine.My Story outline: The Breach starts out like a thriller - the main character, Travis Chase, just released from prison, stumbles upon the wreck of a 747 that contains, among other things, the dead body of the First Lady and a cryptic note alluding to "Tangent." There is no sign of a rescue operation - in fact, there is no sign that anyone else heard the crash.From there, things start to get weird, and slowly but surely veer off into science fiction. Before Chase knows it, he is involved with Tangent, a top-secret agency that is literally underground and maintains control of a breach in space-time through which strange and wonderful (and occasionally VERY deadly dangerous) things periodically arrive.My Recommendation: I don't wish to spoil the story by providing too much information on the plot, so I'll leave things there. But this is definitely a book that fans of thrillers, suspense, conspiracy nuts and sci-fi won't want to miss.

      This is the first of a series of sci-fi thrillers starring Travis Chase, ex-con and ex-cop. It is unimaginably silly, with a death count to rival actual wars, and yet … I was somewhat intrigued. I do love a good time-travel story, which is part of what’s going on here. But I won’t be reading the rest of the series as life is too short. Especially if Travis Chase, wearing his “invisible suit”, has you in his sights.

      If you are looking for a fast-paced, well-written, science fiction thriller, I recommend you pick up this book. I picked it up (the audio edition) mainly because it was available on my library's site, and wasn't disappointed.

      There's a certain amount of violence, (and one scene of torture, which skated just to the edge of my comfort zone) but it is not glorified or described any further than it must be to convey the scene.

      Current day politics and future technology revolve around a main character with an intriguing backstory and an uncertain future. In short, it kept me intrigued from intro to end.

      My totally random brother in law ended up spending a weekend reading this at my house and it was off his recommendation I picked it up.

      This is a damn interesting book. Secret government agencies protecting a "breach' in space and time. From this hole comes a variety of things delivered randomly by some unseen force. Seem objects seem useless, some incredibly dangerous and some possible technological breakthroughs that could change the world. It is not random though. Someone or something in some place or some time has an agenda and it's all about to kick off.

      "The Breach" lives up to its reviews. This is a fast-paced, exciting novel. I thought the opening was very strong, but then it started to get a bit too sci-fi for me. However, the resolution was nicely done and made much of what seemed initially a bit too coincidental make sense.The short chapters often end with wonderful cliff-hangers. Patrick Lee did this so well, that I couldn't keep from thinking I was reading a Matthew Reilly novel at times. High praise indeed.The novel involves what appears to be alien technology that is leading a former top-secret government scientist, Aaron Pilgrim to go rouge. Travis Chase, a former dirty cop who served prison time, and Paige Campbell, who heads Tangent, the aforementioned eyes-only government org, race time and angry hordes of mind-controlled people to take down Pilgrim.

      This book was a very compelling read. I could not put it down. The story is somewhat unique, and the characters were written so well, it just kept me wanting more. The book kept asking impossible questions, but eventually the answers reveal themselves, and my mind was just blown.

      This is the story of Travis Chase, just a normal guy out for a hike. Then, all the sudden, a plane crashes nearby, and some special agents from an unknown agency swarm the place. One of the "good" agents finds him, and he agrees to help track down the plane, and its mysterious contents.

      This is a crazy sci-fi adventure, with time travel, parallel dimensions, and secret artifacts that can do pretty much anything you can imagine. I finished this book in one sitting because I just couldn't put it down. The weirdness factor, and the surprise factor were too much to ignore. I mean, I couldn't predict a goddamn thing in this book, which is a rare and beautiful thing.

      I can't recommend this book enough. It's just that good. In fact, it's so good, I can't even think of anyone to fuck in their dirty asshole. Because, usually books are so bad, someone needs to get fucked dry.

      If I could give this book ten stars, I would. This one kept me up past my bedtime (those of you who know me well know that's quite a feat), taking me by the throat from the first sentence and not letting me go until the last, but even then I wanted more. Still do. When the hell does Ghost Country, the sequel to this, come out?

      I can't even formulate any intelligent thought on this right now. It'll have to wait until I've settled down some. First book I've read in a long time that left me shaking.

      A good fast paced read that has left me keen to read the rest of the trilogy. I thought that the story got a little lost at one point where plot became too over-the-top ( the section in Switzerland with the crowds of people). However, it soon regained focus. Would definately recommend.

      I found this book when looking for recommendations after reading Stephen King's "The Stand".Whilst not as gripping as The Stand, and the characters not as well developed as King's, it is nonetheless a well told story. Almost every night when putting it down the story was poised with a new threat to be overcome. The ideas and obstacles Lee creates are enjoyable and unexpected. Very creative story elements.The love affair between the principle characters was not overwhelming - just sufficient to drive some of their motivations.This is the first in a three-book series. I will not hesitate to read the second.

      Interesting speculative fiction that spans twenty plus years. Principal character had a long term prison sentence then left his family and home to build a new life and come to terms with his sense of guilt. After a year of working and saving, he takes a period to hike and camp in the wilderness far away from other people. Just a chance to distance himself from the closeness that marked his incarceration. Then his peaceful interlude is interrupted in the middle of the night by strange noises and lightening. When he awakes, he dresses, makes coffee and stretches, walking to an overlook to the valley below just as the mist is clearing. A 747 has crashed in the valley below. How could it be here without a score of rescue copters and specialists hovering over it? He packs his camp including his tent in ninety seconds and begins the difficult hike to the wreck site below, intent on providing whatever medical assistance he is capable of. This begins his entry into world level intrigue with his actions making the possible difference between continuation of life on Earth or some other much worse subservient role for mankind. He is exposed to tools and entities that are so far beyond anything modern man knows that It is like ants interfacing with supreme beings with the sense that they aren't even aware of your existence. Will the actions Travis Chase takes doom mankind or become it's salvation? Great characters and action on every page. If you like strong women, Paige Campbell will renew your faith in the possible. Great story with suspense holding you to the edge of your chair. Allocate enough time to read it through as you won't want to put it down.

      I read the second book, Ghost Country, first through the early reviewer group here. It was good enough that I wanted more, and bought this book shortly thereafter. The Breach feels...fresh. It establishes the history of the main character Travis Chase as the story progresses, and continues to develop him throughout the book. He has a complicated past, and an even more complicated future.I liked the idea of the Breach, and it's nice to get the origin story of how it came about. This book is set in today's world, but also works in some futuristic science fiction as well. If you like spy novels, modern action/adventure/thrillers, or science fiction books, you shouldn't miss The Breach!

      This was a well written book, with characters that were easy to become attached to. The action was gripping and the plot enough to keep me guessing until near the end. It is a good blend of sci-fi and action, with just the tiniest hint of romance thrown in. It was entertaining enough that I will likely read the sequel, though I'm thinking I'll wait until the price for the ebook drops into a more reasonable range.

      I really enjoyed this novel, and am glad to see there is a sequel. Lee's prose moved along nicely, and never bogged down with intricate detail or unnecessary description. Dialogue was crisp and well paced. Action smooth and easy to follow.I liked the fact that the main character had very little dialog for most of the book. One thing, though, that I didn't understand, is why the main character went along so willingly with what was happening to him. I think that had to do with the Big Reveal at the end, and if so, that could have been a little clearer.This is for the most part a single character narrative. What takes place away from the MC is brief and to the point, not detracting from the MC's story. The flash backs are quick and tells the read just what they need to know, leaving some details for future disclosure or the reader's imagination.I really like the idea of the Breach itself and the mystery surrounding it. Lee does a good job of piquing the reader's interest and leaving things to the imagination.[The Breach] falls into a genre I've been reading a lot of lately. It's the super-secret-just-outside-the-government's-reach-but-still-the-government-agency that deals with supernatural/alien/monster stuff. Think [David Golemon]'s Event books, or [Jonathan Maberry]'s Joe Ledger novels, or Warehouse 13 and Primeval (both on TV), and maybe a little of [Jeremy Robinson]'s Chess Team, too. All in all, a great thriller/action read.

      An ex-cop/ex-con, Travis Chase, discovers a downed 747 in a remote part of Alaska. Upon further examination of the plane, Travis finds The First Lady dead holding a note with very specific instructions. What happens next is a whirlwind ride through the realm of the near-impossible and Travis Chase is caught in the middle of a battle to save humanity. We learn that an accident with a Large Ion Collider opened a one-way portal from an unknown realm and that a secret group known as Tangent has been challenged to be the guardian of 'The Breach'. However, Tangent has enemies and a former employee is dead set on invoking a plan known only to himself and an entity from the Breach known as 'The Whisper'.This is Patrick Lee's first novel and action packed from start to finish. Is the book far fetched? Yes, but it provides a brilliant framework for future novels. The formula may eventually grow stale, but I look forward to the next entity to arrive from The Breach and how it will act to destroy or perhaps save the world as we know it. A great fast paced thriller.
