FOREWORD
Hi, y’all! I’m so happy to be writing the foreword to How to Honey Boo Boo! This is the ultimate collection of everything you need to know to live like we do, from our games to our recipes to our philosophy. Like us, this book is a lot of fun and doesn’t take itself too seriously!
I’ve heard from fans all over the country about how much they love Alana and Here Comes Honey Boo Boo. The outpouring of support makes us so happy, and we’re glad we’re able to entertain people. One thing folks always ask me is, how close is this to real life? Is this how you guys actually are? Well, I can tell you that what you see is definitely what you get. We are a very close family, we like to get muddy, and we act exactly in real life as we do on the show. All my kids have their own personalities, and I allow them to be who they are, whether on or off camera.
Our family also believes strongly in giving back to our community. This is another big priority for us. We were in need once and someone helped us out, so now we try to be there for others who are in that situation. And who knows, that could be us again one day—you never know what life is going to bring. I hope that reading about some of our community work inspires you to get involved, reach out to others, and help your own community.
While the show is important to me and I love it, my kids are always my number one priority. My advice to anybody is, whatever you do, make your kids number one over anybody else. You can never go wrong with this advice. Life is about making memories and having fun with your family. So I hope you have fun reading the book, I hope you make some sketti, and I hope this gives you some ideas to make some fun memories with your own family.
—June Mama
Shannon
INTRODUCTION
A dolla make me holla, Honey Boo Boo child!
—Alana, a.k.a. Honey Boo Boo
Welcome to How to Honey Boo Boo, the ultimate guide to America’s loudest, gassiest, funniest, most loving, and most generous redneck family. When Alana, Mama June, and Sugar Bear burst onto the scene, most people were instantly drawn to the outrageous and oversize personality of pint-size pageant queen Alana Thompson, a.k.a. Honey Boo Boo. America just couldn’t believe what was coming out of her mouth. But it all made sense once they got to know the rest of her family: beautimous coupon queen Mama June, mud boggin’ Sugar Bear, frog-fearing Jessica, most pregnantest Anna, and lightning-struck Pumpkin.
When Here Comes Honey Boo Boo premiered in 2012, everyone—critics and viewers alike—had a definite opinion about the family. Not that the Shannon/Thompson family cares. Some have found Here Comes Honey Boo Boo to be horrifying, while others can appreciate just how much love and warmth are present in the Honey Boo Boo household. So, what’s their life philosophy? Have fun with the time you have and spend it with your family. Teach your kids the correct values: how to be feugel, how to just be yourself, how to have fun, the importance of family, and, most important, never to buy used panties at a flea market.
Hope you enjoyed our handy Shannon/Thompson family tree. (Just don’t tell Nugget that she’s on the bottom.) Now that you have the family members straight, do you want to learn what it takes to live your life the Honey Boo Boo way? Hells yeah you do! In these pages, we’ve crammed in everything you need to know to be an official unofficial member of the Honey Boo Boo family. Want to learn to make the perfect sketti? Turn to the Shannon/Thompson Recipe Collection. How about finding out what your redneck name would be? Well, the Honey Boo Name Generator is the place for you. Or would you rather get tips on mud boggin’, taking care of a teacup pig, or setting up your own lemonade stand? It’s all here, slathered in butter, in one easy-to-use guide. You’ll find out how to end up with a fatter wallet after a visit to the grocery store, what to do with your kids when they’re crazy bored, and which redneckulously delicious recipes to cook for your own family. We’re also going to explore the over-the-top things the family has done on the show, as well as give you a detailed analysis of Pumpkin’s best sayings (The Ten Greatest Quotes of Miss Lauryn Shannon
). You will be so up on this family that you’ll be farting and burping all the way to the Redneck Games in no time. You betta redneckognize!
TALK LIKE HONEY BOO BOO
A lot of our fans out there asked the reason why we are subtitled so much, ’cause they can’t understand a single word.
But I think, just like anybody, like the northerners and the Californians, some people can’t understand the Southern drawl.
—Mama June
I understand everything June says.
—Sugar Bear
One of the things that has endeared the Shannon/Thompson clan to so many people across the country is the quirky, crazy, and redneckulous way the family speaks every single day. No, not just loudly—though Mama June admits, if you’re not hollerin’ they ain’t listenin’. Hang around the family and you’ll notice that they have their own unique way of speaking. For anyone who wants to learn how to sound like a true member of this clan—or just understand what too-tay means—we present a super-detailed dictionary of Shannon/Thompson speak that explains how to talk Honey Boo Boo–style. You might be apprehensum about learning to talk like Alana and friends, but don’t worry at all—you will be beautimous and smexy in no time. Once you learn to understand their regional patois (subtitles will only get you so far), you might even be able to interpret their lingo for your friends. Each word or phrase is followed by a brief definition and then a summary of how (and why) that word or phrase was used on the show. It’s the redneckopedia we’ve all been waiting for!
Apocalypse
1) The end of the world, which the Mayans predicted would happen in 2012. 2) When the zombies attack. When the apocalypse does come, Mama June’s stockpiled toilet paper rolls will be in high demand, and she plans to sell them for five hundred dollars apiece. The girls tease Mama June about the rows and rows (and rows) of toilet paper she keeps in the pantry, all bought on the cheap using extreme couponing (see chapter 4). But June points out that the girls will be more than happy to have these items when the apocalypse hits, since people will pay big money for staples. The apocalypse is comin’ soon, so be prepared!
Apprehensum
The redneck way of saying apprehensive. See also obstamistical. Mama June coins this term when talking about Alana’s first trip to an ice-skating rink. Alana was a bit . . . apprehensum about it. Mama June says, Alana was pretty skeptical the first time, but once she got onto the ice, I couldn’t get her off.
Indeed, Alana has the time of her life and looks like a li’l pageant princess out on the ice. Don’t be apprehensum next time somebody tries to get you into ice skates. It’s like learning to ride a bike, except you’ll fall down a lot and the ice is really cold.
Armpit serenade
When one puts one’s fist under one’s arm and squeezes, with the objective of making a farting sound. It’s unknown why any member of the Shannon/Thompson clan would need to fake a farting sound.
Arshal-ficial inseminator
A tool that can be used to help women get pregnant, but you can also use it to baste your turkey. June can’t find one, so she has to baste her turkey using a regular spoon: Oh, you’re looking good. You got butter in your ass. I gotta come up with an invention because I can’t find no arshal-ficial inseminator today.
Bamm-Bamm look
To be out in a public place with no shoes or socks on to speak of, à la Bamm-Bamm Flintstone. This term was coined by the manager of the family’s local gas station/convenience store. On some hot days (or just to pass the time), Mama June lets the girls walk down the road to the store to shop, chitchat with the clerks,
