Benefits of Bioidentical Hormone Replacement - Dr Gail Wasserman MS,DC

    Thyroid

    Chapter 1

Don’t Let Your Doctor Give You Horse Urine!

If you call a repairman to your house to fix your refrigerator, you wouldn't want to see him replacing worn parts on your Frigidaire with new parts for an air-conditioner, would you? In the same regard, if you were seeing a doctor for hormone replacement therapy during menopause, why would you let the doctor prescribe medication that comes from horse urine? It doesn't make a lot of sense. Doctors have regularly been prescribing Premarin (also known as CEE, Conjugated Equine Estrogens), an estrogen therapy pill, for menopause since the early 1960's without batting an eye. These estrogen replacement pills, which are being prescribed often and regularly, are hormones, which actually come from horses.

Premarin is derived from the urine of pregnant mares and that is where it gets the name, Premarin. This medication not only causes a host of unwanted feelings for human females, but it also causes a lot of unwanted health risks. While many menopausal women do see relief from symptoms caused by menopause such as hot flashes, vaginal thinning, vaginal dryness, and osteoporosis; there are some huge risks associated with taking Premarin. There are higher rates of endometrial or uterine cancer, breast cancer, liver problems, blood clot or stroke, and liver disease found in women who take equine hormones.

Women may feel some relief from uncomfortable symptoms from taking Premarin, but many of them report feeling strange and unnatural. It is no wonder they feel strange and unnatural - the human female body is not well-equipped to break down and process strong equine hormones.

Many physicians reconcile the higher rates of cancers, liver problems, blood clots, and unnatural feeling by saying every treatment has possible risks. While this is certainly true, and the risks and rewards of every treatment must be considered, it begs the question- why not give human females human hormones as a treatment?

It doesn't seem such a farfetched idea. The human female body is perfectly equipped to synthesize and process human hormones, but not unnatural equine hormones. So the question is, why aren't we prescribing human estrogen instead of horse estrogen? The human female has three types of estrogens occurring naturally in her body. These three types are called estriol (E3), estrone (E1), and estradiol (E2). By studying the circulating levels of these
