About this audiobook

Author

George Orwell

George Orwell (1903–1950), the pen name of Eric Arthur Blair, was an English novelist, essayist, and critic. He was born in India and educated at Eton. After service with the Indian Imperial Police in Burma, he returned to Europe to earn his living by writing. An author and journalist, Orwell was one of the most prominent and influential figures in twentieth-century literature. His unique political allegory Animal Farm was published in 1945, and it was this novel, together with the dystopia of 1984 (1949), which brought him worldwide fame.

    A quick read.
Wasn't the amazing book I thought it would be. Have also just read 1984, so they are similar.

The saddest part was there wasn't any protest from the animals, but that reflects our society still. We just do what we are told as that is easiest.

I might be the last bookish person that hasn't read this yet. I thought it was time. On that note, what more can my dim mind say about this classic that hasn't been said before? Between this book and '1984', Orwell had a unique mind.*Book #127 I have read of the '1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die'

So relevant today as it was when it was first written.

As relevant as 1984 in the current political climate. How easy it is to control people through lies and fear.

I first read this in my early teens in the 1960s. Sadly, I didn't have the background knowledge at that time to appreciate the satire.Re-reading it now, with the necessary historical background in place, has neen a great pleasure. Orwell makes sharp points with humour and gentle prose. What a standout book of the 20th century!

I knew a lot about this book going in. I knew famous quotes, the characters, what it was referencing, and basically the entire plot. For some books, this would completely ruin the point of actually reading the book but so much of the excellence of this story comes from how effectively it was told.

I read 1984 when I was in 7th grade and I remember not really enjoying it. It's something I should probably revisit before passing any final judgements but it did make me hesitant to pick this one up. This one is not that different in style or theme in many ways but was different enough in the overall plot to allow me to enjoy it a lot more. I was somewhat familiar with the actual events of Russian revolution but I don't think you really need to know that much to appreciate the themes in this book. Orwell does an excellent job making apparent the parallels that are being drawn but even if you don't get any of them, I think the overall tone of the story would still be impactful.

This is a classic that has been on my bookshelf for a while that I'm so glad I read and while I recognize this book won't be for everyone, it is a book I would recommend.

A classic book I've finally read. Although it reads like anti communist propaganda it conveys its message well and even had me rooting for the characters. Shorter and lighter than I expected which might explain why it's so popular in schools.

“The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.”I first read this in school and can’t believe it has taken me this long to read it again. I loved this book as a teenager and love it still, although I now have an even greater appreciation for it. Whilst Orwell intended this to be a mockery of the Russian revolution, it clearly applies to almost every nation on Earth, and you can easily see aspects of this today, some 76 years later. Out of all the animals, I had the greatest of sympathy for Benjamin, for whilst he was initially portrayed as a pessimist, he was in fact a realist. Benjamin had lived long enough to see history repeat itself but did not have the power, influence or energy, to do anything about it. I think a lot of us can relate to Benjamin!

Great book describing in animal form, the struggles that humans have faced through our lifetime... how everything we have now seems so awful and a change will bring only good... for the first bit, until things get out of hand, and we need a change again...

A very telling comment on the main fault of socialism. Though its ideals are noble in 'rule of the people by the people through revolution of the workers', there is no mechanism built into the system to prevent the rise of a new elite as bad or even worse than the deposed one.

It's been 30 years since I last read Animal Farm, and its interesting to re-read it now. Orwell's writing remains compelling, but, alarmingly, so does the underlying need to critique the political structures Orwell was so cautionary of.Perhaps because the Cold War has ended, the direct, opaque references to Lenin and Trotsky and their revolution seem less salient today than they did in my first reading. However, the cautionary tale of how a ruling class can manipulate history and institutional memory to the detriment of the oppressed bears a stunning resemblance of the world today. All facts are equal, but some facts are more equal than others. Perhaps it is only the relationship between the ruling class and the intelligentsia that has changed.Alas, too many pigs, too many dogs, and too many Benjamins being portrayed as sheep.

If you want to read an allegory featuring animals that critiques the Russian Revolution and totalitarianism, this book is for you!

Sad but important book. Sad time in history, sad that it is not as out-of-date as it should be, and sad because I like aminals.

Written by Orwell as a direct attack on Russian Communism, the book has more power for me as a take on the corrupting influence of power and the tendency of ordinary people to accept their fate without a fate than it does as a cautionary tale on communism. Because the abuse of power and the apathy of those not in power can and does happen in a wide variety of political venues. My take on the book isn't beware of communism as much as it is beware of those for whom power is everything. Do not become complacent or you may end up with an orange-tinted narcissistic idiot in charge of making life or death decisions that affect you.

It's amusing that this book could have been interpreted originally as a criticism to Socialism in the USSR but most of its metaphors apply to current Capitalism alike. A light but insightful lecture, most certainly recommended.

Animal Farm is an allegory of Communism. The animals on a farm are told by Major, an old pig, about a dream he had where all the animals of England owned their own farm. Soon after he died but his dream was carried out by the animals led by Snowball and Napoleon, two pigs. They drove Mr. Jones, his wife and the hired men out and settled down to live completely by themselves. They called each other "Comrade" and everyone had equal rights and worked equally hard. Snowball was the acknowledged leader though he was never called such. The humans tried to regain the farm but with tactics memorable of Julius Caesar Snowball drove them away. The movement soon deteriorated and Napoleon, jealous of Snowball's fame, chased him off. Under Napoleon's guidance the pigs became "top dogs" on Animal Farm and eventually all the commandments laid down at the beginning were broken. The book concludes with the pigs looking just like men.I think Major is comparable to Marx and Snowball to Lenin. Napoleon is Stalin and the rise of the pigs to the leading class is compared to the rise of Stalin's friends to leadership. The comparison of Stalin and his friends to pigs is very apt and very funny.I enjoyed this book. It is so obviously improbable in the literal sense but it is very applicable to the Communist Party. I got me thinking about Communism and asking questions about it. Before I read Animal Farm I was indifferent to Communism but now I avidly read newspaper articles about it and look up articles in encyclopedias. Animal Farm is not by any means the truth absolute but it sets you on an unending track. This review was written by me when I was in high school. The date was December 16 1969.

Not a fable, fairy tale, or allegory, Animal Farm is simply a straightforward Horror Story of how groups of creaturesallow fear, lies, deception, denial, stupidity, and cruelty to govern them. Away With Truth!
