Descripción

“Tarkington’s writing . . . calls to mind a young Pat Conroy.” —Garden & Gun

When Charlie Boykin was young, he’d thought his life with his single mother was really just fine. But when his mother’s connections get Charlie into boarding school and give them access to the upper echelons of Nashville society, Charlie falls under the spell of all that a life among the wealthy can mean. Increasingly attached to another boy, Arch Creigh, Charlie learns how morality has little to do with life in Belle Meade. On into college and after, Charlie aids Arch in his pursuit of a Senate seat, only to be pulled into a growing web of deceit. The novel examines the questions: Why do the poor love the rich? Why do we envy and worship a class of people that so often exhibits the worst excesses and the lowest morals?

For fans of Ann Patchett's Commonwealth and Kevin Wilson's Nothing to See HereThe Fortunate Ones is an engrossing story of class, love, and loyalty.

Good book to listen to. I did not like the protagonist in the book because he kept running away from every situation he faced instead of taking responsibility. I like the fact the book gave an inside peek in running for mayor and senator. Overall I like the narrator and how he depicted each character making them seem more relatable. I did not like the ending.

This is a real novel. I listen to a lot of "novels" that are actually nothing more than boiler plate stories with a different plot. This book was different. There was depth to the story and it transported me to my first year at a private university, where I, too was indoctrinates into the traditions and customs of the wealthy elite. So many of Tarkington's observations felt as though he had crafted them from my own. It really rang true. Great novel. A real novel.

This was such a surprise and joy to read. Sad, funny, insightful and absolutely beautifully written. One of the best things I’ve read in a long time.
