We've all been there: stuck in a cycle of what-ifs, plagued by indecision, paralyzed by the fear of getting it wrong. Nobody wants to live a life of constant overthinking, but it doesn't feel like something we can choose to stop doing. It feels like something we're wired to do, something we just can't escape. But is it?
Anne Bogel's answer is no. Not only can you overcome negative thought patterns that are repetitive, unhealthy, and unhelpful, you can replace them with positive thought patterns that will bring more peace, joy, and love into your life. In Don't Overthink It, you'll find actionable strategies that can make an immediate and lasting difference in how you deal with questions both small-Should I buy these flowers?-and large-What am I doing with my life? More than a book about making good decisions, Don't Overthink It offers you a framework for making choices you'll be comfortable with, using an appropriate amount of energy, freeing you to focus on all the other stuff that matters in life.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Well researched, but approachable. Brought to the basics without being pedantic. Will be re-reading!
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5I love the book, did not enjoy the “reader”. Too whispery for my taste, too soft spoken. Not an enjoyable listen.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I have read all of her published books. I am not new to her writing style, reading preferences or general bent. This book was not my cup of tea. I just didn’t love this book. This book did not resonate with me at all. Dare I say, it is even a “first world problems” sort of read.

I feel as though it was a wonderful mashup of many self-help books as it really reduced them well to the essence needed in order to work on overthinking.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5At first her suggestions all seemed too straight forward, but she added depth and tangible takeaways throughout the book. I love the thought of creating more routines in your life to take away the stress of too many daily decisions. I also like the thought of prioritizing and making decisions based on what’s important to you (ex. community is important, so pick a church, store, etc. in your area to save travel time). Make decisions that are the same each week, like pizza night, but make it something you look forward to.“If you care, you’ll be there. If you don’t, you won’t.”“With an experiment, there’s no “do it right or do it again”. Instead, it’s “do it and see what happens”.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Reads like a conversation with an old friend. Engaging and delightful throughout. A very helpful and personal perspective. The last chapter is a powerful send-off and benediction -- Wow!The "for further reading" section is intriguing and added to my "to be read" list. In fact, even the footnotes are interesting!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This book’s title finds me guilty as charged! It is an area of my life I am working on. I have a master’s degree in overthinking. The author clearly and convincingly verified what I knew in my heart to be true but didn’t know how to change. For one, I realized in doing so am complicating any decision I need to make. Overthinking adds many unimportant ideas that appear as facts to me at the moment. They are usually nothing more than a lot of “what ifs”. I can see now that satan runs with this and my imagination goes wild. I believe it is a useful tool of his because my thinking becomes so cloudy I lose sight of God and what guidance He had in the matter. I also find myself caught up in anxiety which drains me mentally and physically. The more I over analyze the deeper I go and find I am stuck in this vicious cycle. Not only is there no answer to be found this way, but the useless thoughts just keep coming. Whew! No wonder I ended up in such a mess and still no direction! The author goes even further than just learning to overcome this destructive thought process. She reminded me that by focusing on the principles that guide my life, (which for me come from God and His Word) I will be able make clearer decisions, because those are what most important to me. Another part that jumped out at me is this destructive way of thinking is linked with perfectionism which also goes hand in hand with fear of failure! A great book to help you overcome what is possible one of the biggest hindrances in making sound, choices. I received this book from Baker Publishing in exchange for an honest review. The opinions I have stated are my own.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Don’t Overthink It by Anne Bogel is the type of self-help book to read once (or more) every year. Though the book focuses on how to deal with overthinking, much of the advice applies to overall mental health. Chapter 5 (Take Time to Make Time) and chapter 11 (Rituals to Rely On) resonated strongly with me, but practical suggestions fill the pages of every chapter. There is an emphasis on preserving mental processing/decision-making power by streamlining or outsourcing activities as needed. Almost exclusively, the book focuses on smaller decisions, not big life changes. I found that the advice and practices by the author could be implemented right away.I recommend Don’t Overthink It: Make Easier Decisions, Stop Second-Guessing, and Bring More Joy to Your Life by Anne Bogel to anyone, though the book seems targeted to women. Whether overthinking rates as minor hinderance or a major issue, this book offers suggestions to empower one to make healthy choices. Disclosure of Material Connection: I was provided a copy of this book by the author or publisher. All opinions in this review are my own.
