About this audiobook

The Covent Garden Ladies tells the story of Samuel Derrick, Jack Harris, and Charlotte Hayes, whose complicated and colorful lives were brought together by the publication of Harris's List, an infamous guidebook of prostitutes which detailed addresses, physical characteristics, and "specialties." The true history of the book is a tragicomedy motivated by poverty, passionate love, aspiration, and shame. Its telling plunges the listener down the dark alleys of eighteenth-century London's underworld, a realm populated by tavern owners, pimps, punters, card sharps, and of course, a colorful range of prostitutes and brothel-keepers.

What could have been an interesting and academic insight of these women instead seems to be a hatred to anyone who finds the Jack the Ripper story interesting. Most of the bios are put together with limited facts and Ms Rubenhold fills in the gaps with maybes and perhaps thus creating fictional stories that belittle the police reports and eye witnesses of the time so she can paint a story of these women in her own preferred image. It is sad that these women were victims of the time as were most slum men, children, immigrants and locals. Drink was the medium used by most to block out the nastiness of East End living. But men and women led immoral lives because thats what you did to survive. Maybe these women were prostitutes of maybe they weren't but what unites them is that they are victim's of Jack the Ripper and for whatever the reason thats the focus of people's fascination, without which, the names of these women would be lost in history.

The narrator is horrible! It’s the rhythm of her speech. The information is really interesting, but I had to stop listening.

The reader was excellent, what a fascinating story, didn’t want it to end.
