About this audiobook

The Emperor needs necromancers. The Ninth Necromancer needs a swordswoman. Gideon has a sword, some dirty magazines, and no more time for undead nonsense. Tamsyn Muir's Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap off the page, as skillfully animated as arcane revenants. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy. Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse. She packs up her sword, her shoes, and her dirty magazines, and prepares to launch her daring escape. But her childhood nemesis won't set her free without a service. Harrowhark Nonagesimus, Reverend Daughter of the Ninth House and bone witch extraordinaire, has been summoned into action. The Emperor has invited the heirs to each of his loyal Houses to a deadly trial of wits and skill. If Harrowhark succeeds she will be become an immortal, all-powerful servant of the Resurrection, but no necromancer can ascend without their cavalier. Without Gideon's sword, Harrow will fail, and the Ninth House will die. Of course, some things are better left dead.

Excellent narration. I loved this book, the characterization and the unique setting. I've never seen a story before that so perfectly portrayed an aesthetic.

This book is described as lesbian necromancers in space. But it's actually more like joke-cracking, mostly lesbian swordswoman and bone sorcerer frenemies are guests at an isolated house and figure out a mystery with fighting.

The mystery of compelling, Gideon is an badass who is also a bit of an ass as really she was so much fun to read. The world was super interesting and now it's left me with all of the feels and impatiently waiting for the next book. Read or listen, this book is absolutely worth your time. I'd give it 10 stars if I could.

Cool concept, but kinda boring. The narrator is good, but didn’t fit the story itself. Wouldn’t recommend this one

I didn’t think I’d like this book just because it involved the topic of necromancy. As it turns out this book was hilarious. Really enjoyed it.

Tamsyn Muir crafted such an original and fresh story. Gideon the Ninth is an amazing mix of Sci-fi and Fantasy with mystery and horror thrown into the mix making for an intriguing plot. I absolutely love the relationship between Gideon and Harrow. Gideon’s humor also landed very well for me personally, such great execution at dark humor. I feel like act 4 went full throttle and made this a 5 star book, now I’m left waiting for the sequel. Instagram: @JoeySegura

fascinating premise, a mix of fantasy (mostly) with SF (just barely)... unusual characters with unusual abilities vying for power beyond their comprehension... and then, excrement meets the rapidly-rotating blades :)

I really liked the book! It was enjoyable and lots of unexpected turns. One downside was that I had to sort of keep referencing a site for who all the characters were. But once I did that i really started to enjoy it more

First off, I cannot imagine this book without the expert narration and hope that “Harrow the Ninth” receives the same treatment. This sci-fi-fantasy Agatha Christie with an edge story is totally worthy of its Hugo nomination. The characters, the atmosphere, the action, the drama, the fun all lead into a “page turning” final quarter that left me with more questions than answers and a great appreciation that the tale is not yet complete

For readers of Dune who said “not sapphic enough.” Necromancer nobles duke it out in space for the prize of ultimate power and the glory of the god-emperor. Snappy dialogue and rich characters. Too cool to be believed and fresh to death. A true five-stars.

Describe this book in three words: skeletons, space, lesbians.
Honestly, I don't have words for this book. Very British humor, a funky main character, and necromancy in space? It shouldn't work but it DOES.

I had seen so much love for this book I decided to give it a try. I loved Gideon Nav, she hates where she lives and longs to join the cohort off planet. Harrowhawk is heir to the Ninth house and is childhood frenemy to Gideon. Harrow nips Gideons plans in the bud and offers her the deal that she can leave and go to the army after she becomes Harrow’s cavalier for a trip to the First House so Harrow can become a Lyctor for the Emperor. Most of the plot has them searching the remains of the First House to solve the mystery before the other heirs of the other Houses. The first and middle do drag but the constant snipping between Gideon and Harrow is entertaining. The mystery of Gideon’s beginnings is never solved but lots of background on Harrow is revealed near the end of the book. The ending definitely leaves a fan of the book chomping at the bit for the next one. I listened to this on audio and the narrator was great and I think made it all the more enjoyable.

I have listened to this three times through since discovering it last fall, because apparently death magic is the thing I love. It has been just as enjoyable each time and is boundlessly revealing.

One of the most toxic relationships I’ve ever seen. The world was super cool but the book was DENSE and very confusing. Also seeing as there wasn’t really a romance you can’t really call it a lesbian book

Compelling story told very well. Sometimes a little hard to follow in audio form with so many names but a great ride none the less.

This is an amazing story!! The one of the best read audiobooks I've heard. The writing could use some polish; there are way too many adverbs. They used 'smilingly' ... Really!! But sill an amazing accomplishment.

I really enjoyed this despite its moral ambiguity and sad ending. I thought Gideon was funny and loved the pretentious dialogue and descriptions.

My one complaint was that every character has a first name, a last name, and at least a few titles, all of which were used interchangeably. Multiply that by 20 characters and it is super confusing to keep track of. I basically needed the character list at the beginning of the book in front of me the whole time.
