About this audiobook

The Honourable Catherine Elford – Kitty – is presented with an awful choice. Either she is cast off, penniless, by her step-brother, or she marries the handsome Earl of Ledbury, who would be perfect were he not a serial womaniser. Ledbury has only ever courted other men’s wives, and does not want a wife of his own. However, Kitty’s generous dowry, which will keep him from selling his beloved racehorses, proves too tempting. Kitty believes her only chance of survival is to make her head rule her heart. For his part, Ledbury has spotted a spark in Kitty, and sets out to woo her. But as Kitty begins to succumb to his seduction, Ledbury’s past starts to catch up with them.

This author gets some lukewarm reviews and I’m sorry to say that I am going to be one of them. She writes well but it got boring and the finale was awful. The hero stays in character without really budging and then suddenly he is ready to kill himself over the heroine’s, his wife’s, distrust of him. It went into the ridiculous. There was also no satisfying ending. it was typically supposed to be happy but there were tons of things unresolved and that was annoying. Maybe it needed an epilogue. It was almost a DNF for me and I have about 2 of those for the last 12 months. This writer’s novels should be good but her character development is just a bit off and the plots get almost farcical and weak as they go on. At 4 hours to go (regular time but 2 hours double time) I was ready to be done and slogged through the rest anyway. The Heroine’s hysteria also was over the top and they never even discussed the fact that she had loved the hero way back when. As noted, loose ends abound. I’m actually not going to try another by this author, which is super rare for me as well. Also so so so clean — I have no need of the details you get in most regency romance but you never hear what went wrong on the wedding night and there is nothing but a few chaste kisses thereafter. IMPOSSIBLE that a rake, even if he has agreed to put off the second consummation, would not insist on a bit of fun with his wife over a period of MONTHS.

Just fantastic!!!! Really no more to say. While a very “private” subject matter, still handled with graciousness… for the most part… and not any of the explicit details so many authors rely on to fill the page quota. Some serious misunderstandings and a real mystery near the end. And the narration! Wow! Had not listened to Mr. Addis before but was very pleasantly surprised. As always is true for female voices, his voice for Kitty was a little deeper but suited her character well. And his ever changing voice for George superb! And the secondary characters, both good and bad, completely fleshed out the story. Will DEFINITELY be listening to another book by Ms. Holloway and Mr. Addis.

Simply excellent. From the writing to the narrator - truly delightful. Familiar tropes (it wouldn’t be a Regency without them), but handled in refreshing ways. And the wordsmith. Goodness, it is well done. Deeply touching the emotions without being maudlin or syrupy. And quite a few laugh out loud bits as well! The narrator read very well and did a great job expressing all the emotions from haughty to humble. Great accent deliveries as well, to my ear - however I am an American and so cannot truly be considered a good judge of such things. Listen - you will not be disappointed. Oh! And for all the subject matter focus on ‘the bedroom’, this is a clean read. I did not say passionless, however. Oh. There was passion. Enjoy.
