About this audiobook

Miss Temperance Flowerdew is on her way to work when a stranger suddenly grabs her off the street and sends her on a Chicago-bound train before she can figure out what happened.

When Mr. Gilbert Cavendish is called upon to rescue a missing woman, he follows the trail to Chicago only to discover that the woman is his good friend Temperance. Before they can discover who was behind the abduction, they're seen alone together by a New York society matron, putting their reputations at risk.

Gilbert is willing to propose marriage—except Temperance will have none of it. She's finally stepped out of the shadow of her relations and won't give up her independence. But when it becomes clear the misunderstanding in Chicago has escalated into a threat on her life and followed her to New York, accepting Gilbert's help in solving the mystery may lead to more than she ever could have dreamed.

Caught by surprise by Jen Turano Thought from the summary of this book it was not one I'd be enjoying, thinking of abduction and things smilar to SVU from tv shows.I was totally wrong and this is a fun read. Temperance is abducted and Gilbert is the one to find her-in Chicago. She tells him of her ordeal, her old time friend who they grew up together.Just when you think the Pinkerton man has found the culprits other clues come into play. and just when you think it's been solved again, MORE clues are told.So many secrets from the past come to light making the mysteries believeable. Love hearing of how astritic she is in everything she touches. Like mention of the Vanderbilts and Astors from Newport, RI and their cottages-we had just visited one of the marble mansions and I can see how theses characters would fit right in.This book is not only about Temperance but others, Clementine and all the others who come to play a part.So many twists and turns, very unpredictable.I was able to listen to this from the National Library Service and each character had their own voice-was a fun read for me.Although this is book 3 it can be read as a stand alone.recommended by Bookfun.org

Jen Turano is a master at creating stories with great plots, humor, eccentric characters, and romance. Oh my goodness, it was hard to put this book down! From the moment that Temperance Flowerdew is kidnapped and awakens in a coffin, traveling by train, you know that you are in for a unique and amazing read. Temperance has a fantastic outlook on life and gives everyone the benefit of the doubt. She is spontaneous, artistic, and a great friend.Gilbert, her friend since childhood, is rigid, structured, and also a great friend. The two of them and their escapades kept me laughing. For two opposites, they really compliment each other. If you love a book with a lot of humor, great message, mystery, romance, and eccentric characters.... pick this book up today! You may want to read the first two books in the series before this one. It shows the evolution of the characters and an amazing set of friends.Source: I requested a copy from Netgalley. If you are looking for a historical rom-com, this book is sure to delight. I wasn't sure what to expect in this historical fiction, but quickly realized that it was full of laughs, suspense and unpredictable characters. The story begins with a kidnapping of Temperance Flowerdew that quickly turns into a comedic train ride to Chicago with two not-so-clever kidnappers. The characters interactions will take you on a roller coaster ride of laughing and questioning the predicaments they find themselves in. You are not sure if you should dislike the kidnapping duo or try to understand their viewpoint as Temperance Flowerdew attempts. Temperance finds herself being "rescued" by an old friend, Gilbert Cavendish, and they soon find themselves in awkward and damaging dilemma. Temperance has finally found her independence and does not want anyone telling her what to do, especially Gilbert. All the while Gilbert is trying to keep her safe and find out who and why she was kidnapped in the first place. The story takes a sharp turn when they arrive back in New York and begin to unravel the mystery. This book is light hearted, but not lacking in plot or character. It's a fun read that will have you picking the book up just to see what could possibly happen next. Even though this book is the third in a series, I was unaware of that when I first read it and didn't feel as though I was missing anything.*Thank you to NetGalley & Bethany House Publishers  for my e-copy in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.*

I truly enjoyed the first twenty-eight chapters of Temperance Flowerdew's story from her kidnapping to finding those responsible for the threats on her life, from the difficulties of living with cousins who did not want her to the pursuit of her hand in marriage by someone who wanted her very much. I had anticipated the events that occurred early in chapter twenty-nine, but had been hoping the story wouldn't take that trite route. Then at the end of the chapter I found myself rolling my eyes. Although I actually would have embraced the end of chapter twenty-nine without the beginning. So, I chose to hold onto the wonderfulness, if that's even a word, of the first twenty-eight chapters and rewrite the ending in my head. Jen Turano provided me with some pretty fun characters to do that with, placed them in a delightful setting, and gave me twenty-eight great chapters to become involved in their lives. I thank her for that, and hope she doesn't mind my parting ways over the last couple of chapters. I thank NetGalley and Bethany House for providing me with a copy of Caught By Surprise in exchange for an honest review. I was under no obligation to write a positive review and received no monetary compensation.

I love this writer. There is one problem I have with her books, I can only read them at home. If not I embarrass myself out in public. I cannot read her novels without laughing out loud. I don't mean a sweet little giggle, no, I laugh until I can't catch my breath. Maybe we have the same since of humor, I'm not sure what it is. I found this story to be the best one she has written, but I might have said that last time. If I'm having a bad week, I can pick up a Jen Turano book and reread it or just some parts. I am immediately taken on a fun and exciting journey. Even her characters have fun names. Temperence Flowerdew, a former wallflower is abducted and thrown into a carriage. She's later placed on a train and ends up in Chicago. Her life time best friend Gilbert Cavendish, in a roundabout way shows up and rescues her. The plot thickens, and there are a lot of who done it parts. I kept trying to figure it out, and I was delightfuly surprised at the very end. I had so many favorite quotes, but I chose one that I hope doesn't contain too much of a spoiler.“We best be putting on our disguises, Mercy. It won't do us no good if she get's a look at out faces.” “It also won't do us no good if you keep forgetting to call me Vivian.”“It's apothecary,” Temperance called before she could stop herself, the words echoing eerily around the interior of the coffin.Dead silence was all that greeted her until someone cleared their throat. “You reckon that's God talking to us, Mercy.”“Don't be an idiot, Eugene, the voice came from the coffin.”Get this book, you will love it. I was so surprised and delighted when I won a copy, during a contest, from the author. Thanks Jen, for the book as well as the extra goodies you sent me.

This author never disappoints me. I always know that I am going to love her books. This one is no different. I love the laughter throughout her stories. This has some great romance along with always giving me a laugh. This series has been wonderful. I am sorry to see the end of these characters. I will miss them all. Temperance and Gilbert were fantastic. Enjoy reading. I received a copy of this book from the author for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.

Jen Turano is a name I turn to when I need a light-hearted, whimsical, and thoroughly entertaining book. Caught by Surprise does not disappoint. With preposterous situations and amazingly mismatched protagonists, Turano has recreated her hilarious world, and we all want to enter for the rollicking ride she provides.Turano starts her tale by giving her heroine the rather oxymoronic-name, Temperance. Temperance is anything but. Impetuosity could be her middle name. Gilbert Cavendish, on the other hand, lives by lists. Starting with a botched abduction, this fanciful novel moves along smoothly with breaks only for howls of laughter. Highly recommended! It is not imperative to read the books that come before, but if you do, you will enjoy meeting up with old friends. I was gifted a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. No positive review was required and all opinions are solely my own.

Jen Turano’s Apart From the Crowd series comes to a surprising and entertaining conclusion with Caught By Surprise, as Temperance Flowerdew is kidnapped and sent to Chicago. And because the risk to her life is just not enough drama (ha!), her reputation (and subsequently, her independence) comes under attack when Gilbert Cavendish rescues. The pair has a number of obstacles to overcome, to be sure.It is always a pleasure to read one of Turano’s novel, of course. Plenty of humorous moments, quirky antics, and just over-the-top, dramatic fun can be found in the pages of Caught By Surprise. Knowing Temperance from previous novels (and catching up with this series’ characters) just made it even more enjoyable. I definitely recommend this book (and series!) to readers in need of a pick-me-up sort of historical read. Thanks to Jen Turano and Bethany House, I received a complimentary copy of Caught By Surprise and the opportunity to provide an honest review. I was not required to write a positive review, and all the opinions I have expressed are my own.

If you are familiar with the author you know that her characters are fun, independent and very opinionated. Well I'm talking about the women in her stories. I love how she makes them strong, funny, and at times unpredictable. Temperance is a perfect name for our main character. Her temper is quick but she knows what she wants. Now how did she find herself kidnapped ? Temperance loves adventure but I'm sure this is not what she had in mind. I laughed so hard as she is whisked away on an adventure that will keep readers entertained with her shenanigans. The author has created a character that is such fun I have decided I want to join her on her trip. She would be such a hoot to travel with. Gilbert takes it upon himself to save the damsel in distress. Has anyone told Gilbert that Temperance can handle herself just fine? He is in for some real fun and games as he travels with Temperance. I loved when Gilbert asked Temperance, " You'll stay out of trouble?' Oh Temperance you have stolen my heart with your full of life heart and adventure that will send you on a journey you will not expect. Now lets examine this tangled tale before we go any further in the story. Did you miss the part where Temperance was kidnapped, but the wrong woman was kidnapped. So who was the real person who was to be kidnapped and why? Gilbert is so focused on marrying Temperance to keep people from talking about why they were traveling on the train together, that he forgot to investigate why it even happened in the first place. Now on to the story folks. I see a mystery has emerged and it is getting good. Someone is not telling the truth and just what are they hiding? Is it time to take this kidnapping serious? Well I for one want to tell Temperance to watch her back. Something fishy is going on and it doesn't look good for Temperance right now.One of the best parts of the entire story is the tug of war between Temperance and Gilbert. He is all for protecting her and, well we know Temperance. She is fighting him all the way. Just a little advice, Temperance, I love your independence, but for goodness sake let the poor man protect you. I don't know why but they remind me of Lucy and Ricky. I am enjoying every moment of this book and love how gifted the author is by giving us characters we can laugh with, cheer for and pray with. This story is filled with intrigue, is unpredictable and danger lurking around every corner. Can Temperance and Gilbert solve the mystery before they get hurt? Why are family members out to get them? It's getting harder to trust family members when they seem to be deceitful. Don't miss this great adventure that will keep you entertained while trying to unravel the mystery surrounding Temperance.I received a copy of this book from the author and Bethany House. The review is my own opinion.
