About this audiobook

The visit of quirky world-famous horror author Nathan Grimes to Star City is especially thrilling for Clare Henry and her grandfather Chester. As the owners of The Rescued Word, a charming boutique shop in town, Clare and Chester specialize in restoring old typewriters and repairing beloved books. They've invited Nathan to their shop to use their equipment for his next book.

But all plans to work on the book take a step in the wrong direction when a tourist discovers an abandoned ski boot on the slopes-and the only sign of the owner is the dismembered foot he left inside! Nathan's writer's curiosity for all things horror is further piqued after the body of Clare's high school friend Lloyd Gavin is discovered sans one foot. When all toes point to a class reunion gone wrong, Nathan can't help but join Clare and her best friend, police officer Jodie Wentworth, as they hurry to track down the killer before more former classmates become Most Likely to Be Killed.

Paige Shelton

PAIGE SHELTON had a nomadic childhood, as her father's job as a football coach took her family to seven different towns before she was even twelve years old. After college at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, she moved to Salt Lake City. She thought she'd only stay a couple years, but instead she fell in love with the mountains and a great guy who became her husband. After many decades in Utah, she and her family moved to Arizona. She writes the Scottish Bookshop Mystery series and the Alaska Wild series. Her other series include the Farmers’ Market, Cooking School, and Dangerous Type mystery series.

When her niece Marion, an Olympic-class snowboarder, comes across a tourist who has just found a ski boot with a human foot in it, Clare Henry goes into full investigative mode. It turns out the foot belonged to an old friend of Clare’s … and that he had been invited to a reunion with some fellow classmates, although person who did the inviting is unknown. And now he’s dead, murdered. Clare works in the family business, The Rescued Word, in Star City, Utah. She and her grandfather repair typewriters and restore old books. Marion works there, too. The Rescued Word is also hosting a famous horror author who wants to self-publish a book of his poetry using one of their letterpress printing presses and hot type. In the midst of the turmoil surrounding the discovery of the boot and the body of the human who had been attached to it, Nathan goes missing. Could his disappearance be related to the murder? This is a sweet, cozy mystery series, with a bit of romance, but not too much. It works out nicely that Clare’s friend Jodie is a cop, and that she allows Clare to tag along on some of her investigations. Of course, that’s totally unrealistic in the real world, but passes muster in the world of cozy mysteries. If readers weren’t able to allow for such happenings, there would be no cozy mysteries. Perish the thought!

I always enjoy Paige Shelton's cozies. She write a great backdrop, mostly interesting characters, if sometimes a little, tiny bit wooden, and generally plots a decent mystery. This is the third series of hers I've read, I think, and though I liked the characters in her ghost series better, the setting for this series is my favorite so far. A shop that focuses on all things related to traditional printing: a replica Gutenberg press, bespoke stationary, book and typewriter repairs. Set in a ski resort town in Utah. It just sounds like an amazing way to earn a living. The mystery in this one should have been obvious to me, but somehow it wasn't. I might not have been paying attention, or it might've been just good writing on Shelton's part. I'm inclined to give her the credit. A solid, dependable series in the cozy genre.

The Dangerous Type Mystery Series has quickly become my favorite cozy mystery series. I haven't enjoyed a cozy mystery series to this degree since reading Jenn McKinlay's Hat Shop Mysteries and this time for completely different reasons and that alone is delightful. I was first attracted to this series for purely nostalgic reasons:
•remembering when I first learned to type on a manual typewriter
•moving on to the electric typewriter in personal typing class in 11th grade
•all the related idiocrasies of typing on the actual typewriter equipment I've used from manual to electric to electric with ease of correction features
•all-nighters with a college roommate, an English major, required to turn in many typed compositions but she didn't know how to type and had no desire to learn
However, in reading the 3rd novel in the series and returning to Star City, Utah and specifically to “The Rescued Word” with Clare, Chester, Marion, and Baskerville (fur face resident extraordinaire) I found a higher level of mystery than usual to cozy mysteries (or perhaps I say that as there were only a few suspects and I didn't solve the crime). And amazingly, there's a cliff-hanger that will captivate my imagination until the next novel in the series appears.

This novel was dedicated to Phyllis A. Whitney. I think if Ms. Whitney would have had the opportunity to read this novel, she would have been quite pleased. As a Phyllis Whitney fan as well, I know that I am.
