There are gaps between books when I pick one up by this author. Yet, after reading this book, I will be making a bigger effort to not let this happen. While this is book seven in this series, I had no problems jumping right into this book with the characters. Quincy and Rainie made a good duo. They both kind of shined in this book. I only say this because I felt that Cal Noonan did play a big lead part. He was important in helping to solve the case. Yet, to be honest, it was Sharlah that helped to bring her brother in. Yes, this is a suspense novel but it is more character driven. Thus why it was great that the characters were so engaging. Thus because I enjoyed the characters so much, I had no problems reading this book and staying engaged until the last page. If you are an established fan or a new reader of Lisa Gardner, you will like this book a lot.
Rating: 4Another great DD Warren classic from Lisa Gardner. Four stars not five on this one, because my pathos for the main characters, excluding DD, was not up to usual emotional standards. Also, I felt let down by the ending, feeling as if the author went the safe route in order to extend the life of a solid character into possible sequels rather than shift her into villain status. Definitely a worthwhile read.

This did not affect my opinion of the book or my review itself.Some might find it ironic that Sharlah is on the cusp of being adopted by two people involved in law enforcement. After all, eight years ago her older brother, Telly, killed their drunk and abusive father with a baseball bat. While he did it to save Sharlah's life, they haven't seen each other since the incident.But when a spree shooter seemingly goes on a rampage, and video footage captures Telly on the scene with a gun. Sharlah must face her past, face her brother, and decide what their future holds.This book had a lot of suspense. Flashbacks to eight years ago kept me wondering what had truly happened that night and what it meant about Telly and Sharlah. The search for Telly in the present was well-plotted out as well, involving everyone from trackers to profilers, which also kept the suspense up. There was one particular twist near the end that, even though it was small, had me gasping out loud with how well Gardner had tricked me.I also really liked the relationship between Sharlah and her soon to be adoptive parents Quincy and Rainie. While these are reoccurring characters in a series I had not previously read, I still felt very invested in them and their story.The ending got a little confusing for me. It felt like Gardner had all these ideas for directions the story could go and put them all in. I appreciated that she wanted to take the idea of a "family drama" and really run with it in a unique direction, but the last third of the book could get hard to follow.This is a gripping read that will keep you in suspense. I wish the ending was a bit stronger and a bit clearer, but this was still a book I couldn't put down.

Rating: 4This really is very good. Quincy and Rainie's foster-daughter Sharlah hasn't seen her brother Telly for eight years, since he killed their abusive parents in self-defence. It emerges that he is being fostered himself by a nearby couple, when they are found murdered in their bed. Told from the perspectives of various law enforcement personnel and the first person voices of Sharlah in the present and Telly in the past in flashbacks to the run up to the killings, the various narratives and voices blend well together. The twists and turns were exciting and logical and kept me guessing to the end. While I think this is the best crime novel I've read for a while, I'm deducting half a star for a few things that made no sense to me: SPOILERSHow exactly did the overseas bank account details work as a stalemate? Why didn't Sandra's father just move the money to a different account? Why, on his death, was Sandra suddenly able to move the money without exposing herself by proving herself to be the heir to it? How did the various baddies find out so much about Telly and Sharlah and their past?
Rating: 5I could poke holes in a few plot points, but I won't. I am so happy to see a Quincy and Rainier novel again, loved the two young characters, but mostly because it was the first mystery/police procedural that I didn't want to put down.Quite quickly paced, the effects of early violence on the young, foster homes and the adjustments they take and a strong brother/sister bond. Plus, a wonderful and loyal ex police dog. Also loved Cali, the cheese maker and tracker. Intrigue, suspense and though I saw a few of the twists coming still enjoyed and didn't have a clue about the final resolution of this story. Hope we continue to hear more from two of my favorite profilers.ARC from Netgalley.
Rating: 4Lisa Gardner is consistently good, and "Right Behind You" is no exception. Character development is absolutely essential in her books because in her stories things are never as they seem, and going in depth into the characters is what is needed to tie everything together at the end. Gardner continues in this seventh in her Quincy & Rainie series with excellent character development, an intriguing plot, plenty of suspense, and lots of heart. This is why I love her books; they are so well-rounded and not strictly procedural.When Sharlah May Nash was only five years old, her nine-year-old brother Telly Ray Nash beat their abusive father to death in order to save both of their lives. Eight years later, Sharlah's life is coming together; she's the foster daughter of retired FBI profiler Pierce Quincy and his partner Rainie Conner and about to be adopted by them. Then there are reports of a spree killing taking place, and all clues point to Telly Ray. Sharlah hasn't seen or spoken to her brother in the eight years that have passed, but she finds it hard to believe that her protective brother has become a mass murderer.Quincy and Rainie are on the case. Has Telly Ray's hard life led him to become a cold-blooded murderer? What else could possibly be going on? Quincy and Rainie are faced with a case that hits them closer than ever to home.The only thing preventing me from giving this book 5 stars is that it didn't have that "grab me and never let go" feeling. The book moved in fits and starts for about the first 60 pages; the plot took off at a running start, then slowed, then sped up, then slowed, etc. Finally after 60 pages it seemed to get its groove and took off. Also, one of the bad guys revealed at the end was a little bit of a letdown - not poorly chosen, just anticlimactic. The book was still an enjoyable read, and I give it a solid 4 stars.
Rating: 4It's been a while since I have read a book by Lisa Gardner and it took me a little bit to really get into it. Once I was into it though, I was hooked. From the very beginning my heart broke for Telly and I hoped that what seemed obvious wasn't true. Can there be good in someone with a horrific childhood? Someone, who as a young child murdered his parents, in self defence but still the result was the same. After that Telly went from foster home to foster home but then at 17, landed with a family that got him, understood who he was and for the first time in a long time that hard shell he had around him started to break. His sister Sharlah also went from home to home and seemed to have found her forever home. The siblings haven't seen each other since that night so long ago but could there still be a connection after so long? When Telly's foster parents are both shot to death, Telly is on the run with numerous law enforcement after him. Have his scars from the past made him into a spree killer?A really good read from Lisa Gardner.
Rating: 4I've greatly enjoyed other books by Lisa Gardner, including Say Goodbye and The Neighbor. This one I did not like so much. Not even close to believable, too many critical characters introduced towards the end of the book, and whiney main characters. Not her best.
Rating: 3I'm having a difficult getting through Lisa Gardner's 'Right Behind You.' The pace is extremely slow and Gardner spends far too much time repeating research material rather than advancing plot or developing characters.I bought this one and I'm so sorry I did. I suggest potential readers get a library copy.
Rating: 2After a nine year hiatus, Lisa Gardner has brought back Quincy and Rainie and the FBI profiler series and it was worth waiting for. She has brought them up to date but all of the things that I loved about this series were back and even better than before! This was a real page turner with lots of twists and turns. Every time that I thought I had something figured out, the author would throw in a twist that I never saw coming and make me realize that I hadn't solved anything yet.Quincy and Rainie are retired but still working on special projects for the police. They are also in the process of adopting their foster daughter - 13 year old Sharlah who had lived a horrific childhood. When Sharlah was 4, her older brother Telly beat their parents to death with a baseball bat and broken Sharlah's shoulder during the attack. As a child who has suffered abuse the couple is working very hard to make her part of their family and be not afraid of her past or her future. They have made a lot of progress when Quincy gets a call from the local sheriff to help with a homicide - four people are dead and the police are searching for a young man, who turns out to be Sharlah's brother Telly. Even through Sharlah hasn't talked to her brother in over 9 years, she is still afraid for him and tries to help him in her own way. That's all I can say about the plot without giving anything away but I will tell you that you will read this book very fast to find out how it ends.I loved this book and stayed up way past my bedtime to finish it. It's wonderful to have these two characters back - along with their wonderful soon to be daughter - and in the capable storytelling hands of such a fantastic author!Thanks to Dutton for a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Rating: 5This was a fantastic read. There were so many twists and turns. I did not want to put this book down. I love reading about Quincy and Rainey but it was great to add Sharlah. Why would Sharlah's brother show up after all these years? Why were they separated in the first place? This was a great story. I laughed and cried. I received an ebook from Firsttoread for a fair and honest opinion.

This story is a lot slower than other Lisa Gardner books. I still enjoyed it, but as the story unravelled I found myself more drawn to the relationships of families involved - the abuse that went on - the secrets and lies. It's lik e the author has gone from fast-paced FBI police procedural crime novel to a character driven story. Nothing wrong with that, it's just not what I expected.
Rainie and Quincy still make a great couple, the writing style is enjoyable and easy to read. It may be light on the FBI profile and police procedural aspects, but Right Behind You still made for a great read because the characters were so endearing, and quite often physically and emotionally vulnerable.
I'm interested to see what Lisa Gardner's next book (comes out Feb. 19 2019) titled NEVER TELL, is going to be like. It apparently features Detective D.D. Warren joining forces with vigilante Flora Dane to investigate the murder of known associate of Flora's infamous kidnapper.

There will be no straddling the fence here. The subject of child abuse is never an easy one to read about and more than likely it's probably not the easiest subject to write about. Lisa Gardner's novels always seem to have a dark theme running through them and I thought that this one was not going to be an exception. However the further I read the more I found this one to be more sad than dark. It's not so much a mystery or a thriller but more of a drama and very character driven. I wished the Conner's had been more than a background filler but the book was very well written and well worth the wait for another Quincey and Rainie novel.

The stories the children tell of their past and how much they cared for each other are incredibly heartbreaking. I listened to the audio narrated by Luke Daniels and Teri Schnaubelt, who did an excellent job. It was nice to see two favorite characters back after almost ten years. I couldn't remember a thing about the main characters, so this is definitely a book that can be read as a standalone novel. I believe this is the first novel I’ve read by Ms. Gardner, and, based on this book, it won’t be the last. The story is very fast paced, with most of the action (barring flashbacks) occurring within a 24-hour period. I enjoy books that are paced this way, though oftentimes a quickly moving plot equals poorly developed characters. That is not the case here. Sharlah, Quincy, and Rainie are brought to life without the use of long exposition. Additionally, the author’s use of flashbacks helps to flesh out Telly and his foster parents. The reader finds themselves in a position of having a better understanding than the investigators of the relationship between the troubled teen and the Duvalls, who he stands accused of murdering. Even with that knowledge, however, there are still twists and turns that keep the reader off-balance and continually guessing. Not to brag, but I normally figure out twist endings well in advance of the end of the book, but not this time. I had bits and pieces worked out, but was still surprised at the climax. I was also impressed by the obvious research the author did on the mindset of not only long-term foster children, but of children affected by trauma. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fast-paced books with lots of twists and turns.

Rating: 4Eight years ago Telly Ray Nash took a baseball bat to his father’s head, killing him. True the elder Nash was running after Telly and his younger sister, Sharlah, wielding a knife. True he had just fatally slashed Telly’s mother with that same knife. It was an instance of fight or flight and the two young children had no where to go, so Telly defended himself and his sister the best way he knew how.The orphans were separated, Telly bouncing around foster homes until Frank and Sandra Duvall took him in and tried to get him ready for adulthood. Sharlah fared somewhat better, finally settling in with Pierce Quincy and Rainie, a retired FBI profiler and a retired police officer, respectively. They want to adopt Sharlah and become a true family, which she is OK with.Their separate lives converged when Telly was filmed shooting out the security camera in a local convenience store, the site of a double murder. When the police arrive at the Duvall’s looking for Telly, they find Frank and Sandra shot dead. Telly is the likely suspect.The manhunt for Telly involves profilers, trackers, and multiple police agencies. Of course, all is not what it seems. There are secrets that need to be told in order to identify the murderer.The action starts in chapter one and continues throughout the book. Right Behind You grabs and keeps your attention. Of course, you are pulling for Sharlah and Telly. The twists and turns keep you guessing. And you’ll absolutely fall in love with Luka, Sharlah’s dog, also a retired police officer.I read Lisa Gardner’s Crash and Burn and Catch Me. I really liked Crash and Burn. As I said in my review of it, “…Gardner weaves a great story and that is what makes you want to keep reading. Readers will immediately take to the characters. They’ll get caught up in their lives. They’ll want to unravel the mystery.” This holds true for Right Behind You as well.There is a reason Lisa Gardner is a best selling author and Right Behind You is one of the reasons.
