Descripción
In this deeply scary and intensely unnerving debut novel, Jake and a woman known only as "The Girlfriend" are on a drive to visit his parents at their secluded farm. But when Jake leaves "The Girlfriend" stranded at an abandoned high school, what follows is a twisted unraveling of the darkest unease, an exploration into psychological frailty, and an ending as suspenseful as The Usual Suspects and as haunting as Misery.
Deeply scary and intensely unnerving, Iain Reid's debut novel is a tightening spiral of a story about a woman's uncertainty of her relationship with her boyfriend, Jake. After an uncomfortable and confusing trip to meet Jake's parents at their isolated farmhouse, reality unravels and events spin out of control when Jake and "The Girlfriend" make an unscheduled stop at an abandoned high school. Part murder mystery, part psychological thriller, I'm Thinking of Ending Things is about doubt, psychological fragility, and the lengths we'll go to avoid the truth. Twisted as Shutter Island, as suspenseful as Under the Skin and as atmospheric as The Sisters Brothers, Reid's breakout literary thriller is sure to keep readers guessing until the last page.

“Reality happens only once.” (Quotation page 48)
Content:
Two people in a car, driving on a cold winter day somewhere in the rural country. Jake and his girlfriend are going to visit his parents who live on a lonely farm. The girl is thinking about the future, but mostly about ending things. They could stay overnight but the girl wants to dive home, although it is late, snowing and freezing.
Theme and genre:
This is a gripping, dense, psychological thriller with many unforeseeable twists and chapters that seem not to fit into the story. A simple road trip that ends different from anything the reader would expect.
Characters:
The girl, we do not even know her name, is thinking about ending things, maybe after having met his parents. She is scared by many calls and voice messages from a stranger, telling her “there is only one question”. Jack is intelligent and the girl seems somehow attracted to him.
Plot and writing:
It seems a simple car ride, written in the first person as told only by the girl and her thoughts. Interrupted by pieces of a written conversation that gives some frightening hints. A special twisted story, chilling and very entertaining the same time.
Conclusion:
Words are missing to explain this gripping psychological thriller, the genius of the author, without giving too many hints. I would recommend just reading it and enjoying.

Reed's newest novel, "Foe", is a delicately plotted novel of psychological fear, ratcheting up the suspense just a little every page, building and building to the climax. This work, an earlier effort, shows the promise that resulted in "Foe". A youngish couple are driving into farm country to visit his parents for the first time. All the while, the woman is observing her feelings for the man, whom she's known for just a few weeks, and trying to decide whether she should end the relationship. The drive and the conversation are pretty boring and go on for maybe a third of the book, and only the determined reader will keep going, thinking there's no earthly reason these two would be making this trip if their connection is this tenuous, so either the book gets much more interesting or the author's just awful at his trade. If it had been a different author I probably would have put the book aside, but I'd just read "Foe"so I kept at it. Things get much creepier once the couple reaches the farm, at which point the reader is thinking, what the hell is wrong with this woman? Why doesn't she run screaming for the nearest road, or grab the car keys? And what the hell is she doing wandering around the house on her own, anyway, overhearing cryptic snatches of conversations? It's sort of like watching a horror movie where the main character decides to step "over" the monster's prone body to get to the door. Anyway, the plot does keep getting stranger and stranger, with an ending that is telegraphed faintly throughout but never becomes clear until that end is closing in, and it's not disappointing.Looked back on, the pacing and plotting make more sense than while the book's being read, and it's possible to see how it was designed to try to get the same visceral reaction from the reader as "Foe" does, but I think the subject matter doesn't lend itself as easily to the genre. Many readers will have put it down and gone on to something else before the horror really gets a grip on them. But I have to tell you, if Reid produces another book as good as "Foe", I certainly want to read it.

Was I scared? Yes. Did this book fully freak me out? Yes. Did it keep me turning the pages with great anticipation? Yes.Was this full of a lot of philosophical musings that seemed like the author trying to show off? Yes. Did they add to the story? Somewhat, but it was way overdone. Do I understand the ending? No, not really. There is only one question... Did I "like" this book? Similar to the ending: I'm not really sure.

This was an interesting book - I wish I could say that I saw the end coming but I didn't, though I will say there were some things that rang suspicious in my mind from the beginning but I couldn't quite come to the conclusion on my own. This one is definitely a 'thriller' with a bit of a twist at the end. I was really intrigued right off the bat and couldn't put it down. I didn't love the ending much (after the twist is revealed), but it was still a good thriller in its own right.

Honestly, I though this book was great. I was surprised for the majority of the book. I constantly wanted to know what was going to happen next, there was just something that captivated me. There were enough hints along the way to help me along. Even before I started the book, I had an idea of how it was going to end. My hunch was partly correct, there was enough that I was still shocked. I found it to be a quick and a fun read.

An unnamed narrator is on a car ride with her boyfriend, Jake, to visit Jake's parents for dinner at their remote farm, but she's thinking of ending their relationship for reasons she can't quite articulate. No spoilers! This is the third new book I've read this year that is strange and unsettling in a subtle but effective way, and that plays around with the form of the novel to subvert the reader's expectations. I generally enjoy this type of novel when it's well done. Of those three (the other two were Ill Will by Dan Chaon and Universal Harvester by John Darnielle), this is the one I liked the least. In fact, I was prepared to assign it a low rating, but after giving it some thought and doing some rereading, I concluded that this was actually very well written. Many of the things that irritated me about the story--the strange story changes, the stilted dialogue, the stream-of-consciousness narration--made sense once the entire story had been revealed and were certainly deliberately crafted choices on the part of the author. To me, the overall story felt a little too ungrounded, too many strange things happening one after the other, and then the end came off as slightly gimmicky. But it was indeed creepy and suspenseful without being overtly scary or horrific, and I appreciated that.

Very very creepy, very very good.

Creepy: in parts. Not at all what I thought from the description. While the mind can produce terror, I just didn't get that from this book. Twist at the end: eh, not that exciting. Had high hopes for this one. Was glad it was a short book.

A young woman and her boyfriend are on their way to his parents secluded farmhouse. She's not completely comfortable about meeting them. On the drive there she has lots of time to reflect on their relationship and ask him questions. On their way back she becomes stranded at a high school out in the middle of nowhere. And you just have to read this book.
I went into this one with high expectations. And I wasn't disappointed! It was intense and suspenseful. In some ways it was relatable. In some ways it made me uncomfortable. I loved the writing and the ending. Very clever.
I won a copy through Goodreads First Reads.

I get why people think this is awesome - but I was bored. I saw the ending coming by the end of the first chapter and it wasn't a good enough ride to just enjoy it. Maybe if I read it a second time I'll appreciate the prose and the set-up but overall, my response was "eh". It gets released on June 14th and I know my store will have copies and I'm eager to see if my customers pick it up or not.

Wellll, there's no real way to review this book without spoilers. Ostensibly a story about a smart, new(ish) couple driving out to the country to meet dude's parents. All the while the girlfriend is considering ending the relationship. Things get very uncomfortable, and then eerie, and then PLOT TWIST. Reid's dialogues are smart and natural, and the momentum of the story almost requires a fast reading pace (I read it twice in 2 days). So it is imminently readable. I'm just not sure if it goes beyond beach reading. Books with BIG REVEALS tend to leave a bad taste in my mouth; too gimmicky--ends up feeling like a cheap (rather than a deep) thrill.

Creep factor, yes, but the book itself I found lacking. Yes there is a spin toward the end and yes a larger spin past that but creepiness alone did not make this a real nail biter or page turner for me.
chooki666
Very unsettling. It reminded me of a creepy dream. True psychological suspense. Not for everyone.
scrabblenut
This was a strange and creepy mystery which really had me wondering what was going on and very anxious to reach the end of the story. Compelling.

Wish I could give it a 3.85 or 3.9= Mind. Blown. Super atmospheric. Weaves you into a tight sense of doom and unease. The entire book I felt disturbed and off my bearings.I guessed a bit of the ending. The rest I had to go back and figure out how he did it. Still.have questions, but second pass through and you'll pick up the trail more clearly.Still, whoa. This one will mess with your mind.

Not sure whether to leave a 3 or a 4 star rating. The first half or even 3/4 of this story was very good. Well written, creepy, with an overall feeling of foreboding and a palpable noir. At some point, however, the story seemed to unravel, becoming somewhat unnecessarily repetitive and tedious. Not totally sure I understood the ending which was, to be sure, a little muddled. Maybe I should listen to it again?? I really liked the narrator, though. I thought she was perfect and gave a rightly creepy feeling to the tale.

Going into this I wasn't sure what to expect I briefly read the synopsis but I thought this book would go a different way. I think this book was a bit of a disappointment. The story I think wasn't well written. I think it's a little cliche. I wanted to be shocked but it was a letdown.
Zyriah Carter
The narration was amazing and it made it much better when I was reading the e-book with it.

This book was discussed on the podcast "books in the freezer" and the hosts really liked it so I gave it a shot. The story is mostly dragging conversation and not much action until the end. I do like that there was a twist but I think it just fell flat for me.

The beginning was SO GOOD and it fell so flat. Whomp whomp.

This book was horrible!! What a waste of a credit.

What in the world was this? I’ll tell you. It’s about 6 hours of my life I won’t get back

it was good, a quick ‘read’ that I finished listening to in a single morning. the suspense built up and was eerie and scary mid-way through.

This was a great read. Usually horror books don’t scare me, but this was one of those instances where you realize that everyday people around you can be terrifying.

Oh boy... I think I need to sit down ?

It was intriguing all the way to the end. However, it was one of the worst endings I've ever read.
Nathaniel J. Marcelin
This book was amazing! If you enjoy being held in suspense this is the one for you! This book does a pretty good job of transcribing the mental phenomenon of an existential crisis and puts it not only into perspective but into a very interesting story. It teaches self-reflection and regret. Very good read! 4/5.

Good in the beginning but poor on the ending
But still, it is a good work!
But still, it is a good work!

Wow, is all I can say really. As I rode along in the car with these two main characters, I kept waiting and waiting and waiting for something interesting, amazing, scary, shocking...anything to happen, and it really didn't. There were moments in the book that moves you forward tempting you and making you think something was around the bend, but once again...nothing. The narrator was in general fine, but again not the best. I finished it realizing I kinda knew the outcome anyway but still felt so duped.

Try to do as the book says, the circling in the end
