      The fun in Robert Flynn’s North to Yesterday, set in the 19th century after the Civil War, is not limited to the novel’s engaging narrative and inventive comedy. In telling the story of a cattle drive done under great duress, Flynn stakes out issues still prominent in America today. Economic troubles. Religiosity. Victimization. Crime and (at times comic) punishment. Feminist themes are brought out to colorful effect in the spirited character of “Covina,” a notable effort in a Western published in 1967. North to Yesterday is also an often wry yet affectionate tribute to misplaced dreams, to the sad fact that sometimes our timing cannot be more off, and to the strange way even pointless suffering or tragedy may be accompanied by rewards of a kind. One of the pleasures of reading a book set in the past is its own arcana. Some of my favorites from this one:Gouch hook—an implement used to lift hot, heavy lids off Dutch ovensSoogan—bedroll; a course blanket used by cowboys and ranchmenHigh ball—a railroad signal to proceedFrog—the crossing point of two rails, i.e. a type of railway switchPilot—synonymous with cowcatcher on a trainGoad—a spiked stick used for driving cattleChousing—cheatingDrummer—a traveling salesmanInfectious quinsy—an abscess in tissue around a tonsilRobert Flynn has his milieu dialed. I’d like to see a movie based on this book.
