About this audiobook

Ann Cleeves is back with Thin Air, the sixth book in her beloved Shetland series, which is now a hit television show starring Douglas Henshall.

A group of old university friends leave the bright lights of London and travel to Shetland to celebrate the marriage of one of their friends. But, one of them, Eleanor, disappears—apparently into thin air. It's mid-summer, a time of light nights and unexpected mists. And then Eleanor's body is discovered lying in a small loch close to the cliff edge.

Detectives Jimmy Perez and Willow Reeves are dispatched to investigate. Before she went missing, Eleanor claimed to have seen the ghost of a local child who drowned in the 1920s. Her interest in the ghost had seemed unhealthy—obsessive, even—to her friends: an indication of a troubled mind. But Jimmy and Willow are convinced that there is more to Eleanor's death than they first thought.

Is there a secret that lies behind the myth? One so shocking that someone would kill—many years later—to protect?

Ann Cleeves' striking new novel is a quintessential whodunit with surprises at every turn.

Once again, this book from the Shetland series did not disappoint. Also once again, my ideas of the guilty party kept changing almost to the end of the book. Cleeves crafts an intriguing mystery with characters I have grown to love.

    My View
This was yet another excellent book in this superb series. This would have to be one of my favourite series, I love the setting for the books, the main group of characters, the suspense and tension that is built up during the book and the plotting of these books. At the end of each book when you think back all the clues are there and you think why didn't I get that, but in each book you keep changing your ideas about who the killer is, but you never fully work it out until the reveal. Yet again once you know all the details it is obvious who the killer is and the killer in this book was on my radar on a few occasions. It was good to see Jimmy was in a much improved place in this book and demonstrates once again his high quality detection skills and his patience and calm. The only bad point is I've now reached the end of the books published so far in the series and I have to wait for the next two to be published - I hope she writes quickly. If you haven't read this series, what are you waiting for!

In this book, Ann Cleeves is back to fine form, as Jimmy Perez is called in to investigate the death of a young woman found lying on the beach. Her body has been arranged in a somewhat artistic manner, and there are no clues. Then, another murder comes along to add to the mix. The relationship between Jimmy and Willow deepens, and much remains unsaid. She is his boss, but often seems out of her depth, and does not seem to be able to adapt to his style. It is a tangled web indeed with complicated family relationships that only Jimmy Perez could have solved!

Author Ann Cleeves always sheds light on some facet of Shetland life. In Thin Air it's hamefarin or homecoming-- a time for expatriates return home to celebrate their roots. What better thing to do than bring a group of outsiders to Shetland who don't necessarily get along with each other? And who better to investigate the disappearance of one of them than Detective Jimmy Perez?Although Jimmy is still in mourning for his wife, fellow detective Willow Reeves is attracted to him, and it's interesting to watch her emotions play out throughout the book. Jimmy is his usual (rather) enigmatic self, getting the job done with a minimum of fuss or even notice. Perez is so unobtrusive about what he does that he leaves people wondering how he's made them all so dependent on him. While we're dealing with Shetland's fog which is affecting the ferry and plane schedules (and making us feel claustrophobic), Perez does his job. Endless rounds of going to people and listening to what they say, how they say it, and what they don't say. Few fictional detectives can listen to the degree that Jimmy Perez can. And few fictional detectives have the other characters wondering "how [Perez] managed to win people over. Perhaps it was something as simple as kindness." Indeed, it is kindness. Thin Air is a very quiet mystery, muffled in fog and shrouded in secrecy. It's as quiet and deceptive as Jimmy Perez himself-- and every bit as satisfying. If you have yet to read one of Ann Cleeve's Shetland novels, I urge you to begin at the beginning with Raven Black. If you're well acquainted with Jimmy Perez, I have good news. This is another excellent addition to the series. Dig in.

Detective Jimmy Perez and his superior Willow Reeves are called to investigate a murder on the northernmost isle of Unst. Assisting is the local officer Sandy Wilson. The victim was creating a film about encounters with ghosts and was including the local sightings of Peerie Lizzie. Her husband, university friends, their dates or mates, and a few locals are the most likely suspects. This installment is very atmospheric. The local legend adds to that feeling. Perez is still coping with the loss of Fran. He takes Fran's daughter to visit her grandparents in the London area. Although I wondered at one point in the story about whether the person who committed the dastardly deed might be the guilty party, I never really formed a strong feeling of anyone's guilt until the reveal. I listened to the audio book read by Kenny Blyth who did a great job.

I love catching up with the Shetland series. There's plenty of mystery in THIN AIR, as well as human interest as Jimmy Perez tries to re-establish his life as a detective in the islands. We learn too a little more about Jimmy's personal life.In addition, with its island setting THIN AIR is really a variant of locked room mystery, with limited access to the island, and also a limited number of murder suspects: one of the members of the wedding party, or a local resident? And for what motive? Ann Cleeves does a good job with tantalising red herrings. When a second person is murdered the investigators are convinced there must be a connection between the two murders but who of the incomers knew the second victim or had a reason to kill him? And why would a resident kill both? And is there a connection with "Peerie Lizzie", the little girl from the "big house" drowned decades before by the incoming tide? Jimmy Perez is coming around to the idea that that might have been a murder too, although the nanny was always blamed for neglect, and seemed to take the blame when she committed suicide. In the long run, the final solution was something that I did not forsee at all.Kenny Blyth does an excellent job of the narration, enhancing the setting by using a Scottish accent.

Jimmy Perez is called to Unst after the suspicious death of a visitor who was planning a tv documentary about a local ghost. DCI Willow from Inverness is called in to oversee the investigation and there are hints she may have more than a professional interest in Jimmy now that he is recovering from Fran's death. As always the local knowledge embedded in the plot and strongly drawn characters bring the story to life, before the culprit is finally revealed. Excellent.

The story took too long to unfold and it seemed repetitive, the little girl ghost, the neurotic Polly, Willow needed to get laid, poor Perez! The TV series is better and this particular story was not portrayed in the series, for good reason.

Another excellent Shetlands mystery featuring Jimmy, Sandy, and Willow. Old college friends get together for a wedding between two of them. All seems well until two of the friends see a ghost and one turns up dead. Jimmy and crew work to find out why against a background of mysterious local tales and historic scandals. The author’s focus on weather, particularly the fog, truly enhanced the scary-movie ambiance of the story. At some point, the fog actually seems to become a character all its own. The only way to improve this story would be to read it on Halloween.
