- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A remarkable contrast develops when a self-absorbed Swedish poet meets three young migrant women, whose stories of struggle and exploitation are told in stark counterpoint to the pathetic emotional and financial relationships of the poet's normal life. I was totally annoyed by the poet, Humlin, but the girls' stories are compelling, emphasising the sense of disorientation engendered by such extreme experiences. And the structure of the novel is a bit odd, beginning with one of the girls, Tea-Bag, as the protagonist, but then shifting to Humlin for the rest of it, with the girls' stories provided in the context of bizarre writing seminars that Humlin gets involved in. So, yes, frustrating at times, but ultimately satisfying and thought-provoking.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5When asked in a Spanish refugee camp, an African girl answers "Tea Bag" and keeps that name. Later, she's able to flee to Sweden where she meets the poet Jesper Humlin. He decides to give writing lessons to her and two other immigrants. He gets facsinated by her story and the lives of his students...Even thought this is a fiction book, the stories of the immigrants are true. This book gives a good idea about the life of refugees, the different reasons why they fled their home country, the way they help each other out and how they deal with having to live as a shadow or the conflicts between the culture of their new country and their old country...It's the 1st non-crime book I read from Mankell and I liked it a lot. Definatly will read his other ones as well. Book is a bit too short for my liking though...
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This is a fascinating story of the "real" experiences of illegal immigrants whoose stories are told within the format of a novel. We should all read this book which gives an insight into another world that co-exists within our own.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5OK, I have a love/hate relationship with this book. Certainly I feel some sympathy for the young women, but frankly, they were irritating. Help me, help me, but there is no way I can trust you. I am certain this is my own prejudice, as I can't begin to understand how bad their lives were. On the other hand, I loved Jesper, and his interactions with other people.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5A stand alone by Swedish author Henning Mankell. Know for his Wallender series, this book is an emotional tale of the very real plight of immigrants. The title is descriptive of those who arrive in Sweden, or elsewhere, without papers. Main characters are 3 young women with horrific tales to tell about there journeys to Sweden and their existences on the run from authorities. They want to tell their story and an uninspiring poet with many hang ups has been chosen as the one to help them. I kept thinking I was going to put this book aside. I am a huge fan of the Wallender books and this was not what I wanted to read. But I kept reading...
