Akaki Akákievich es un funcionario que trabaja como copista. Hombre austero, sencillo y conformado con su gris rutina, dedica sus ratos libres a lo único que le complace, la fiel copia de documentos. Hace tiempo que su capote se cae a pedazos y, a base de privaciones y esfuerzo, reúne el dinero necesario para comprar uno nuevo. La prenda causa sensación entre sus compañeros que, medio en broma, organizan una cena en su honor. Tras la fiesta, mientras regresa a su casa, le atracan y le roban su preciado capote. El funcionario recurre a la autoridad en busca de justicia pero sólo recibe desconsideración y, poco después, muere víctima de un fuerte catarro. Pero el bueno de Akaki aún dará que hablar... Con este triste relato, salpicado de fino humor, Gogol hace un entrañable retrato de la desangelada existencia de un hombre que, a pesar de ello, encuentra su momento de gloria.

Nikolai Gogol
Nikolai Gogol was a Russian novelist and playwright born in what is now considered part of the modern Ukraine. By the time he was 15, Gogol worked as an amateur writer for both Russian and Ukrainian scripts, and then turned his attention and talent to prose. His short-story collections were immediately successful and his first novel, The Government Inspector, was well-received. Gogol went on to publish numerous acclaimed works, including Dead Souls, The Portrait, Marriage, and a revision of Taras Bulba. He died in 1852 while working on the second part of Dead Souls.
