About this audiobook

Mercy Reynolds is a reporter in the San Francisco Bay area, but she's also more-and less-than human. Half woman, half air dragon, she's a "draman"-unable to shift shape but still able to unleash fiery energy. Now something will put her powers to the test.

Mercy's friend Rainey has enlisted her help to solve her sister's murder. Then a horrible accident claims Rainey's life, leaving Mercy only five days to find the killer: If Mercy fails, according to dragon law, Rainey's soul will be doomed to roam the earth for eternity. But how can Mercy help when she herself is a target? With nowhere else to turn, she must join forces with a sexy stranger-the mysterious man they call "Muerte," or death itself, who's as irresistible as he is treacherous. But can even Death keep Mercy alive for long enough to find her answers?

I enjoyed this books a 2nd in a series but stand alone.

Keri Arthur is a writer that I continue to read. I have read her books and enjoy them. Mercy Burns is the second book in the myth and magic series.

I did like this book but I didn't feel a connection to Mercy & Muerte. Maybe Muerte need to be developed a little more for me to connect with or I needed to feel more of an attraction between them, but I will look forward to the next in the series.

Mercy Burns is a reporter in the San Francisco area, but she is also half woman half dragon. Unable to shape shift but able to control fire energy unlike others. When Mercy's friend Rainey is killed while trying to uncover a story Mercy must now find the killer: to free Rainey's soul or she will become earth bound.
While on the run she encounters Muerte, a sexy stranger that she now must join forces with, but can he keep her alive long enough to fine the killer.

MERCY BURNS was an interesting paranormal romance. Mercy is a draman - half-human, half-dragon - who has been raised a second class citizen and been abused by the full dragons in her area. She is a journalist who is investigating the extermination of some draman towns with her best friend Rainey when they are run off the road. Rainey is killed and Mercy has 5 days to find her killers in order to save her soul. While investigating, she is taken captive and thrown into a cell with a muerte named Damon Rey - a full dragon who has special tasks and acts as an executioner for his kingdom. Mercy's dragon powers manage to get them free and, since they both want to know who and why the draman towns were destroyed, they team up. Mercy is rather impulsive and doesn't have much of a sense of self-preservation. If she had more sense, she would run from the muerte since everyone is afraid of them.Mercy very hesitantly falls in love with him. Her main hesitation has to do with her previous experiences with full dragons. It doesn't help that he has certain mistaken prejudices about draman too. However, their love grows as they have to depend on each other to solve the mystery. The romance doesn't go smoothly since Damon doesn't believe that he can emotionally commit to anyone. Fans of paranormal romance and especially dragon fans will enjoy this story.

The second book in the Myth and Magic series, this story centers around the sister Trae was so worried about, but whom we never met, in Destiny Kills. Although connected to the first book this book can also be read as a stand alone novel.

Mercy Burns is an urban fantasy novel that began when Mercy Wilson woke up realizing that she's in a car crash and that her friend were already dead. Even as a half-human and half-dragon kind with heightened recovery rate, she was unable to perform a prayer to her friend before the dawn took Rainy's body away. Now Rainy's soul is doomed on earth and never be free until Mercy found her killers and make them pay.

While on a lead, she was drugged and kidnapped, only to be lead in a cell with a dragon known as Death. By helping them both escape, Mercy knew she was on borrowed time for herself and her friend's soul and enlisted Damon's help before many more died.

Although I was a long time fan of Keri Arthur and currently still following her Dark Angels series, I was quite disappointed by this book. There was somewhat lacking in the story structure that made it both an Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance. The story greatly involve more on the plot with the dragon and half dragon communities and its people particularly against Mercy with the various attempt on taking her life. There was a metaphor against prejudices between the dragons and draman. The principles in which the characters live and the scars they survived.

However, in the span of several days, although there are some heat between Mercy and Damon, the story wasn't enough to intrigue a reader as a whole. There are simply too many crime stories and politics to fit inside this one volume which doesn't do well with the romantic flow between the characters as it is a stand alone story. Thus making it a subpar version of a paranormal romance and a moderate contemporary novel despite the supernatural elements.

I just felt there's a real problem in cramming happily-ever-after romance in this book with the time length between the characters and its prominent enough that the characterizations doesn't expand much from what they're in the beginning. The whole dragon angle is interesting but if you really like a smouldering dragon UF that balanced with the romance, Thea Harrison's Dragon Bound is probably a better alternative than this book.

The 2nd novel of the Myth and Magic series is “Mercy Burns” and about Mercy Reynolds. Mercy is the sister of Trae from the 1st novel and a draman or human/dragon half-breed. While her and her best friend Rainey is investigating the disappearance/death of Rainey’s sister, they are struck head on by a truck and push off the road into a ravine. It is no accident. Rainey is killed and because she is a dragon in order for soul to move on from this world someone needs to pray for her before after her death. Since Mercy was unconscious during that time, in order for Rainey’s soul to move on Mercy must avenge Rainey’s death by killing those responsible in the next 7 days. Mercy leaves the hospital and sets up a meeting with a man who was the original contact for her and Rainey and is drugged and kidnapped. While she is being held in a dark, steel box, there is another captive inside. This captive is a male dragon and one considered a muerte by his kind. Muerte means “death” in Spanish and basically Damon is an assassin who enforces the edicts of the dragon council in order to keep the race safe. Damon and Mercy work together to escape their captors and then strike an unlikely alliance to solve the mystery of several town disappearances. Both motivated by personal reasons and their ever growing attraction, they find out their investigation will lead them down issues that can alter the structure of their very race.I found this edition in the series more fluid in its story flow than book one and I highly enjoyed the issues are characters were facing. You cannot help but feel bad about how persecuted the draman race has been treated by the dragons and the trials Mercy herself has gone through in her young life. She has quite a chip on her shoulder with regards to full-blooded dragons and poor Damon is the unfortunate victim of her fury in many incidences. Damon’s position as an enforcer for the council has left some blinders on with regards to the abilities of her species as a whole and he becomes educated quickly by Mercy. The race issue between dramans and dragons is a pressure item for this story that is hard to contemplate our duo of conquering. I love Mercy’s knowledge that she is already Damon’s soul mate if he chooses to claim her, which shows her inner confidence shinning as brightly as her flame. Damon’s belief in being the solitary killer is absolute, but watching him slowly but surely fall for Mercy is tantalizing. He really never has a chance. I personally also enjoyed the final chapter cameo of Destiny and Trae, which gives us nice warmth to Mercy’s life after so much grief. I felt the novel was filled enough action and romance to merit 4 stars and a recommended read for any of Keri Artur’s work.
