Sometimes even the passage of half a century cannot bury the secrets of a horrific crime. That's what J.P. "Beau" Beaumont learns in this thriller from the estimable J.A. Jance.
Beau has put in 20 years with the Seattle Police Department. He's now with the Washington State Attorney's Special Homicide Investigation Team, and finds himself dubbed to track a cold case, a very cold case. A nun, Sister Mary Katherine, has undergone hypnotherapy during which she recalled a heinous crime, a murder, that she witnessed when she was a child. Evidently fear had kept this memory from surfacing, and fearful she should be because while the victim is long dead the complex plot behind the killing is not.
I enjoyed this book a great deal. Beau's getting another partner (hopefully this one will live for a while) and the plot has enough twists and turns to be interesting. "Mysteries" in the conventional sense have never been Jance's strong suit--she's not Michael Connelly--but her characters and dialog are very good.

I've been a fan of J.A. Jance for a long time and thought I had read all of the J.P. Beaumont series. Somehow, however, I seem to have missed this one. Beau has moved from his Seattle P.D. detective job and is now working for the State's Attorney General's "Special Homicide Investigation Team" (the acronym of which causes great glee within the unit, but due to political correctness is never used in public!). He is called to meet with a woman (now a nun) who claims to have witnessed a murder when she was about 5 years old. This memory has been recently brought to light while she was under hypnosis. While Beau is trying to track down a victim, a location, and ultimately determine the veracity of the report, his former partner Ron Peters is in need of his help both personally and professionally. The tension that arises from this interaction begets another exciting case to be followed. As always, there is plenty of suspense, numerous clues to follow, plenty of wise-cracking (although Beaumont has certainly mellowed a lot from his earlier alcoholic days) and a perhaps new?? love interest for Beaumont. This is a series I really love, both in audio and in print. This particular audio featured Gene Engene, a voice that was new to me. It took a while to adjust to his narration, but then I settled in and was able to adjust. As usual, the story and the character took over. A great read and a great addition to the series.
Rating: 4I had been reading Jance's Joanna Brady series for a while before I discovered her Seattle detective J. P. Beaumont. It took a bit though for Beaumont to grow on me; now I like him almost as much as Brady. How many fictional detectives are recovering alcholics? It seems to me there are quite a few, and Beaumont is yet another AA member in good standing. He has also suffered through tragedies such as the shooting death of his female partner and the "death by cop" of his last wife on their wedding day. He was raised by his grandmother who is still "the" woman in his life even though she has married his AA sponsor. Enough drama? Beaumont thinks so and has remained single and partnerless for a while.Long Time Gone begins with a five year old girl, home alone, who witnesses the murder of the nice lady next door. The woman is stabbed multiple times in the driveway and after the little girl hides until she is certain the murderers are gone, she returns to the window to see that the body and the blood are gone. Then we jump to years later when she is an adult, a nun, and suddenly is waking up screaming in the night. She is mother superior of a convent and her nuns are anxious for her sanity.Not only is Beaumont drawn into that cold case, his best friend Ron Peters and his family are undergoing tension that threatens to pull them apart. When both Peters and one of his daughters come to Beaumont for advice and help, he can't help being involved in their problems. For a loner, Beaumont ends up being so involved with these two issues that he has trouble even finding time for his grandmother who is ill. This is hard for him to handle but the story is fun for the reader to attempt to figure out. As I said, Beau has grown on me so I enjoyed this adventure into relationships for him. I don't worry about him falling off the wagon anymore; he seems quite comfortable as a nondrinker now and ready for a new relationship. Since this book is five years old, I see I have some fun ahead catching up.I recommend this one. Even if you haven't cared for Beau in the past, give it a try.
Rating: 3I think this is the first book by this author. OK...mystery with two plots going on. I figured out one of them early on. What I did like is that this is a female author writing with a male main character. I love that. It makes the internal thoughts and comments easy to relate to. I will probably read more and give the author a chance.
Rating: 2This is a great book it really has you turning just when you think you have it solved there is another twist that you aren’t expecting. The main character is J.P. Beaumont who has been around for a while. He has moved up from Seattle P.D. to a special team known as S.H.I.T squad. He has been put on a very cold case which proves to have many twists and turns through out the book. Should be a great read for anyone who likes a good story with twists and turns and a major surprise ending. I definitely give this book 5 stars.
