About this audiobook

When Macadoo is just a colt, he challenges his father, a huge Belgian stallion, in order to protect his mother and the rest of the herd. From that moment on, Mac knows that his purpose in life is to help and serve others however he can.

Though Macadoo endures much adversity-leaving the only home he's ever known, being separated from his dam, and surviving an auction that for many horses is their final stop before the slaughterhouse-he finds the courage to "walk on" through even the most difficult circumstances. And he eventually finds a sense of home and good companions, first with Izzy, Poppa, and their mules, then at the Maury River Stables, where he learns to teach children therapeutic riding and vaulting.

Told from Macadoo's point of view and featuring beloved characters from Chancey of the Maury River, this is a story that horse lovers will cherish.

I am not really a horse person, but I know that this book would definatly tug on a horse lovers heart. I wish it had a little more of the other characters thoughts, feelings, and emotions. I also think that the action was not blended well, the little bit of action there is. Sorry, but I do not think it was a great book!

Well....I was hoping for better things with this one. This children's book is part of a series, and perhaps I would have felt fonder of it had I read the earlier books in the series. As it is, I found it, unfortunately, awfully dull, and I attribute this to the title character's narrative voice, which never really comes to life. Conversations between the characters are flat and do not reflect the emotions the characters claim to be experiencing.

Macadoo will win your heart! This is the story of Macadoo, a Belgian draft horse. The story is told through Macadoo's perspective. Macadoo's brave, loyal, and funny personality caught my attention in the first few chapters and I was worried for him as he faced auctions and rooting for him as he found new owners who treated him well. Great writing, exciting story, and lovable characters will make this book a winner with kids who love horses or animal stories. This is the second Maury River book. Chancey of Maury River is the first and I am excited to go back and read it! Recommended for ages 9 and up.

I was happy to win this Advance Reading Copy from LibraryThing. This was an interesting and engaging book told from the horse's, Macadoo's, point of view. Macadoo learned true character and destiny as he grew up and discovered his purpose in life. Macadoo learned to set aside his own unhappiness in order to make others happy. He served others and developed lasting friendships. Through Macadoo, kids will learn that no matter what circumstances they are in, that they have a destiny in life to fulfill. They will learn that no matter what they are told by others, that they matter. They will learn that when people they love leave, they will come back and be remembered. These themes are prevalent through this story and are encouraging themes for kids and people of all ages.

I found this story really cute and enjoyed how the struggles of the main character Macadoo. I did find the dialogue of Macadoo to be a bit forced and cheesy. That being said this is a book I would have loved as a kid.

I must admit I wasn't sure what to expect from this story. It's not the type of book I typically read, but I was pleasantly surprised. The story is told from the point of view of Macadoo, a Belgian horse. It covers several years of his life, yet the story flows so seamlessly it doesn't feel like it was years.Macadoo searches for his ultimate purpose in life as he goes through the difficulties of being auctioned off, being separated from his mother, and being separated from people and other animals that he loved. It was interesting watching him struggle with the same questions and issues that people deal with, such as finding his purpose, dealing with loss, and finding happiness.Overall I enjoyed this story. It was an easy read (I was able to read it in one day), and I would recommend it to others.

"Macadoo of the Maury River" is an unpretentious little book, told from a horse's point of view in much the same manner as the classic "Black Beauty", but with less drama and cruelty content. In some ways, it reminded me of another classic, "The Velveteen Rabbit", about how an animal can make a difference in a person's life, or, in this case, several lives.Nicely written, entertaining, with not too much philosophizing.

This is a wonderful children's book. You cheer for this young Belgian as he makes his journey from farm to auction to farm. As this horse deals with life issues you feel his joys and heart breaks. He has loved and lost just like the young children he has fallen in love with. I can't wait to recommend this book to the students I work with.

Macadoo was a very sweet children’s book about a horse. It’s no Black Beauty, but is nicely narrated by the horse. Overall this is a good book for elementary-age horse lovers. As an adult, I felt there were some issues—the stallion, Macadoo’s father, seems to have a sense of history of the Belgian breed which somehow felt unbelievable, and had also anger issues, which didn’t fit the warmth, kindness, and mission of being helpful that Macadoo and his dam are ‘bred’ as Belgians to have. Also, there were several spots where a transition sentence could have eased an abrupt change in the story (two of these were early in the book and the book improved as it went on).But I think young horse lovers will enjoy the idea of a large, calm horse being kind to students, therapeutic riding clients, and vaulting beginners. I requested to review this book because my daughter is a vaulter—and the vaulting parts of the book might intrigue younger riders who haven’t seen or heard of vaulting before. A solid 3 star read.
