Outraged, Oliver decides to hire a woman from a brothel to pose as his fiancée to prove that he can't be forced into marriage.

When he meets Maria Butterfield, a beautiful American woman who is searching for her fiancé in the most unlikely of places, he knows she's perfect for his ruse. But before long, Oliver finds himself willing to risk anything to make Maria his—even his heart, and the dark secret he hides inside it.

With "delectably witty dialogue, subtly named characters, and scorching sexual chemistry between two perfectly matched protagonists" (Booklist), this is an unputdownable and charming romance.

It is a very good book. I do not perfer male readers unless the accent is Scottish or they can do a better female voice. Sometimes the female voices bug me. But overall ot is a good book. I know Freddie is described as not being fat but I couldn't help but to imagine him as so.

I enjoyed this book alot. It move along at a good pace, and I did like both the male and female leads. It was light, but it did contain a bit of a mystery regarding the deaths of Oliver's parents. I do hope that each of the following books gives us more information on what happened to them.

This is the first book of the Hellions of Halstead Hall. I got the second book as a free review so I figured before I started it I would read this one. It was a good historical romance. The author does write a very catching story I just wish there was a little more... something. I liked the characters. I almost like some of the background characters more. You knew from the onset that everything was going to work out. I know it is a romance and you would expect nothing less but there really was not any real obstacle the characters had to overcome. Overall it was a good book but not a memorable one.

The Truth About Lord Stoneville (Hellions of Halstead Hall) by Sabrina JeffriesRegency Romance – Jan. 19, 20104 ½ stars The Truth About Lord Stoneville is a winning tale that is sure to please Regency fans.  Sabrina Jeffries’s sure touch carries this story as I quickly found myself attracted to the characters in her newest series.  In this series, the members of the Sharpe clan are all summoned by their canny and rich grandmother to their old home Halstead Hall. The Sharpe brothers and sister are known for their reckless and independent ways. But when one has an unfortunate accident the grandmother finally commands them all to marry within the year or all of them will loose their inheritance. Outraged they try to reason with her but without avail. But Oliver Sharpe, the Marquess of Stoneville has a cunning plan of his own. He means to find the most wretched and unappealing fiancée.  One that his grandmother will never approve of and therefore call off the ridiculous plan to force him to marry.  Maria Butterfield is a dreadful American who is stubborn, independent and dreadfully ‘inexperienced.’ But Oliver soon finds Maria is more attractive than he knows what to do with and her American charm has a way of getting under his skin.  A woman that is the complete opposite of what he usually prefers may just be what he needed all these years.  But can he convince her of his true affections after blackmailing her to pretend to be his fiancée?This was a fun romance. I was charmed with Oliver’s brothers and sisters as they tried to match make Maria and Oliver. Even they knew before Maria and Oliver that they were destined for each other! As they tried to get the 2 together (They also think if only Oliver marries then they won’t have to!), the story gets more entertaining and outrageous. I can’t wait to read how each of them gets caught in the marriage trap! Sabrina Jeffries is one of my favorite writers.  The only reason I did not grade this story higher is because I actually found myself becoming more interested in Oliver’s siblings as the story progressed! This is a solid story with very engaging characters.  I am eager to find out more about the rest of the Sharpe clan and their devious grandmother. This series is one sure to delight Regency fans and keep them coming for more!  Reviewed by Steph from the Bookaholics Romance Book Club

Great read! Can't wait for the rest of the books in this series. I especially loved grandma, she is devious much like I remember my own being. It would be nice if she got her own story :o) I can only imagine the man that would capture her heart.

American heiress, Maria Butterfield must count on the help of rakehell Lord Stoneville to help her find her fiance (for complicated reasons). He finds it hard to resist her natural charm and unaffected demeanor - but is it enough to give up his notorious reputation and settle down? Not bad, but not great either. I didn't feel any strong attachment to either the hero or heroine, but this looks to be a promising beginning to a new series for me.

Disappointing for a Sabrina Jeffries book but OK overall. I really dislike the plot device of forcing someone to marry or they don't get an inheritance. The other books in the series will have to be more creative with this or I'll be very uncomfortable with the sisters books (women didn't have much choice and now they are being forced to marry within a year). The book spent more time introducing the family and preparing for the future books which is why I think I was disappointed. The future books characters seem pretty interesting and I will continue the series but wish less time was spent developing them here. The family also reminded me quite a bit of Gaelen Foley's Knight family (scandal by the parents that causes the children to be scandalous). But in terms of the scandals that the characters have here (except for the parents) they seem quite tame. More of a milder version of the Knights. An OK first book of her new series but wish I had left it on the TBR shelf for a bit.

The first in a new series. Jeffries writes very well, but the premise of this one is off-putting. I will be picking up the others as they are published, though.

Maria Butterfield has come to England looking for her fiancee (Nathan) who has seemed to gone missing. She is from Baltimore in America. Her father had recently passed away, and having been the owner of a shipping line, the only way to get her inheritance is to locate Nathan, who was her father's partner. He came to England at her father's request, to negotiate a sale of clipper ships. However after sending him many letters and not receiving a word about his whereabouts, Maria decided to come to London to find him, thinking that he has been hurt or taken. She is accompanied by her cousin Freddy, who thinks carrying a sword with him will protect her. During their search they come across a brothel that may be the key to finding Nathan, however events occur which puts Maria face to face with Oliver Sharpe, the Marquess of Stoneville. Oliver, along with his other siblings, have been instructed by their grandmother that unless they marry within one year, that they will lose all of their inheritance. Oliver is outraged, and comes up with a plan to trick his grandmother into giving up this "folly" thinking that she is just tricking them and would never go along with it. It decides to go to a brothel, and pay a woman to act as his fiancee although he never thought that he would come across a young american woman that puts a sword to his throat. (which that alone should get you interested in this book :) ) Oliver acts nonchalantly of course, and convinces her of a better way to resolve the current issue at hand. He suggest that they do a trade of sorts, if Maria will act as his fiancee for the time being, he will assist her in her search for her lost fiancee. Where Oliver hopes to trick his grandmother into reengaging from this plot which he believes is just a bluff on her side of things. Well both Oliver and Maria will be taken on a adventure of their lives where they discover the hidden power of love in the midst of any circumstance.I definitely believe that Sabrina Jeffries is one of the best Historical Romance authors out there!!! She has such a way about her writing and the way she brings her characters alive. I enjoy reading each and every one of her books. The Truth About Lord Stoneville is the first in her current series, the Hellions of Helstead Hall. Oliver is a arrogant but has a past that no other knows about except for himself. He is filled with guilt thinking he caused his parents death, and has lived with that for many years. The moment he comes in contact with Maria, he secretly knows that his life will never be the same. For she brings a vitality back to his reality and even though he has this act to play out, in his heart he is playing for her heart for real. Maria is at this point poor to say the least, due to her father's will, so when Oliver tells her of this plot that she must go along with, she only see's it as a means to a end. She worries about her fiancee and where he is at, but despite all that she starts to have tender feelings for this rogue, whose heated kisses set her body on fire. I truly enjoyed the way that this story played out, although this was a enjoyable story, it isn't one of my fav's of Jeffries, but I loved it all the same. It had such a spark of vitality about it, that really sets the reader to life. It was a very enchanting read with compelling characters both main and sub, and with a aching desire that sets the room ablaze.
